Characters; Shizune, Hyuuga Hinata
Summary; After being missing for nearly a week, Hinata shows up at Shizune's apartment.
Log; Sandaled feet moved with agonizing slowness as they climbed the flights of stairs to her destination. She tripped, stumbling slightly as one foot caught on the rough edge of the step, catching herself on the railing and wincing as the harsh coldness of the metal stung her burning hands. Gritting her teeth and continuing, she finally made it to the door she sought. The dark-haired girl stood in front of it, T-shirt rumpled and torn in a few places, skin marked by scrapes, bruises, and abrasions. Her forehead was bandaged, as were her arms from the elbows down. Those same arms trembled slightly as she stood, the aftereffect of both exhaustion and severe chakra burns. Raising one small hand, she slowly knocked on the door.
Shizune looked up sharply, startled by the sudden knock. Kabuto had left the apartment in a hurry only moments before, muttering something about Orochimaru, and her nerves were on edge. Proceeding slowly to the door, she pulled two kunai from the pouch on her thigh, creeping forward until she could peer out the peephole to see who stood on the other side. Her eyes widened a bit at seeing Hinata, not Kabuto or another sound nin as she had expected. And she was also surprised to see her state. Quickly placing the kunai back into their sheaths, she unlocked the door, pulling it open. "Hinata?"
Hinata smiled weakly at Shizune, pale-coloured eyes portraying not only exhaustion but also a sense of achievement and pride, as if she had accomplished something important. She swayed on her feet slightly, as though the mere act of standing was difficult. "Shizune-sensei. I...I did it...." Before she could say anything else, her alabaster eyes rolled back and she collapsed onto the concrete in front of the door.
"Hinata!" Shizune sprung forward, sliding her arms underneath the girl to soften her landing. She glanced down the hall, eyes narrowed. Nothing. No movement. But she'd seen Kimimaro leave the apartment earlier... but she hadn't seen him come back. Putting that concern in the back of her mind, she crouched, gathering the younger woman in her arms and lifting her, hastily bringing her into the safety of the apartment. Placing her gently down on the couch, she returned to the door, casting a few more furtive glances down the halls, eyes lingering on the Sound apartment before she locked the door. Returning to Hinata's side, she looked the girl over. ... She looked exhaiusted, among other things. Burns, bruises... it reminded her of how Uzumaki Naruto had looked after trying to hard to learn Rasengan. And if her words were what she thought they were, Hinata had been training to use the jutsu she had described earlier, the one that would removed the seal from a member of the Hyuuga's branch family. Giving a small sigh, Shizune folded her legs under her, hand softly touching Hinata's shoulder. "Hinata?" She murmured, hoping for a response.
Hinata stirred, a faint moan escaping her lips as she opened opalescent eyes to focus slowly on Shizune. "Shizune...sensei?"
"Hinata." Shizune nodded, a faint smile coming to her face. "It's me." She confirmed, scooting closer so the other girl wouldn't have to work too hard to focus. "... can you tell me what happened, Hinata? Where have you been?" She thought she knew the answer, but it was better to ask. And once she got her story she needed to tend to her, those wounds, though not life-threatening, had to be uncomfortable.
Hinata smiled slightly, the sort of smile that a person who has exhausted themselves utterly in the pursuit of a goal wears. "I...I did it....I ...I understand it now...." She struggled to sit up, though it was obvious that her arms were extremely painful from the yelp of pain that escaped her as she pushed palms against the couch. "I...need to go back....I haven't trained enough...it's not quite enough...I have the chakra....I just need more....more... control...."
"Lay back down, Hinata." Shizune insisted in her bedside tone, using her hands to gently push Hinata back down to the couch. "You're exhausted, you're not going anywhere." She tut-tutted, shaking her head, her eyes drawn to the bandages on the other girl's arms. She reached forward, softly moving one to the side, revealing the bad burns associated with overuse of chakra. A worried expression came to her face then, and she stood, striding into the kitchen and beginning to run the hot water into a basin, pulling healing supplies out of cabinets as she did so. "Hinata, how close are you?"
She was too worn-out to really offer much protest as Shizune pushed her back down onto the couch, but as Shizune made her way into the kitchen, she pulled herself back up, one hand clinging to the couch for support. "I...almost.. I can gather the chakra that I need, and I can focus it, I just....I can't control it the way I need to be able to. It's not....precise enough.." As if to punctuate her words, she held up one bandaged hand, grimacing as she concentrated. The blueish glow swirled around her hand for a mere second before it snapped into the white flames again. But this time they were different, not the flowing and dancing shapes of normal flames. These were sharp and focused and shone with an intensity almost as bright as Hatake Kakashi's chidori. She only held the chakra for a moment before it guttered out, and she grabbed her wrist with a yelp of pain, biting her lower lip as her body protested her abuse of it.
Shizune gathered the basin of hot water, throwing a few towels into it and heading back to the couch, medical bag at her hip. She paused, however, to watch the display of chakra. Her eyes followed the glow of blue, examined as it snapped into a sharp, chrisp image of a white flame, before spluttering out. She recognized the signs of exhaustion not only of the body, but of charka, and began moving again, coming to the couch side and sitting, wringing a towel out into the basin of water as she carefully took Hinata's arm. "You really shouldn't do that in your condition, Hinata. You know that." She chastised, but it was a gentle lecture. She moved slowly, easing off the bandages from the burns, peeling the back to reveal her arms.
Hinata winced, whimpering at the slight friction of bandages against raw flesh. She shook her head at Shizune. "No..I have to. For...for Neji-niisan. I...I want to set him free. And...I want him to be proud of me....to not see me as a weakling and a burden.."
"You'll be no good to Neji passed out in the wilds somewhere." Shizune murmured, tossing the dirtied bandages to the side and picking up the hot towel, bringing it to bear, placing it gingerly on the arm with a "this will sting." Moving as delicately as she could, she washed the burns, washing the towel in the basin before moving on to the next arm. "And speaking of Neji, we need to talk about that."
Hinata whimpered, biting her lip against the pain. She slitted open one squinted pale eye as Shizune continued. "What do you mean, Shizune-sensei?"
"Before you leave remind me to give you some birth control, alright?" Shizune tried to be as proffessional about that as she could. Tenten had informed her of what had happened on that one curse day, and goodness knows, she'd given this talk to Chouji and Ino already. It should have been easier by now. Hinata has always been sensitive, though.
Professional or not, Shizune's words did not have the easy casualness that she desired. Hinata let out a squeak, turned bright red, and looked as though she wanted to sink into the cushions of the couch. Her childhood stutter returned in full force as she tried to play it off. how...how did she know?! She swallowed hard, looking anywhere BUT at Shizune. "Sh..sh..Shizune-sensei...I..I...wh..what are you.....?"
"Tenten told me." Shizune let the chakra flow into her hands, holding Hinata's arm and using her other hand to glide over the burns, the healing chakra soothing. "And I suspected before that, anyway."
"I...." Hinata swallowed, fighting back the sense of betrayal at the knowledge that Tenten had told Shizune. No, she shouldn't be angry with Tenten, especially not after the way the other kunoichi had helped her. And, honestly, the idea of birth control had never crossed her mind... Maybe it was a good thing that Shizune knew. At least that way, if it happened again, there wouldn't be untoward complications. But...Shizune seemed to think that it was something that would be repeated. She shook her head. "I...it's not like it's going to happen again. I....it was just twice....And...it's not as though he was....himself, either time...."
"I'd like you to take some anyway." Shizune murmured, running her hand slowly, steadily up the girl's arm, the burns slowly disappearing under the green glow of her chakra. "In case it happens again, curse or no curse." Tenten had only told her of one incident, but the idea that it had happened more than once was nothing too shocking. Considering what had already happened in this world anyway. At least she isn't sleeping with the enemy. She thought, unaware that her mouth was moving to the thought as she absently healed injuries.
"Sleeping with the enemy? What do you mean by that, Shizune-sensei? And...I don't think it would happen without a curse...Neji-niisan...doesn't feel that way for me, afterall..." Her energy seemed to be returning somewhat due to Shizune's healing, but she still felt woozy and off-balance as if her internal equilibrium wasn't right. Of course it wasn't going to happen again. It shouldn't have happened twice....especially since he didnt' love her...
Shizune's eyes shot up, taken away from the healing she was doing. "Ah-" She gave a half-spluttered noise, cursing herself mentally. She defenitely needed to be paying more attention. She was loosing her touch. Or something. "... Ah..." She stumbled for an excuse, something to say, but couldn't seem to find anything.
Hinata cocked her head to the side, confused at Shizune's sudden change of attitude. "Shizune-sensei.....is something wrong?" She had the feeling that there was something going on that she wasn't supposed to know. And while she wasn't about to pry, she couldn't help but wonder what it was that had gotten then normally-calm kunoichi so flustered.
"I..." Shizune let her eyes return to the burns, quickly going back to healing them. It wouldn't do any harm, she supposed, if Hinata knew. She could keep a secret. God knows, if anyone would have blabbed by now she had thought it would have been Anko. And... the way things were going... she didn't want to think about who else knew. And there was no point in hiding it now. "... It's just that I suppose I have no right to lecture about love and the like." She whispered.
She pursed her lips, studying Shizune's face. She could tell that the older woman was quite troubled about whatever it was, and Hinata wished there was something she could do to help ease the tension that showed in her mentor's eyes. But without knowing what the problem was, she felt there wasn't much she could offer. She settled for a small smile and a shake of her head. "No....you were right. I....I should have been more careful. I....I guess I never stopped to think about the consequences..." She swallowed, still embarassed somewhat to be talking about her love life with ANYONE. "I...I'm sure you know more then I know. I mean, you're so stable and sensible, you always know the right things to do. I...I can't ever be like that..."
"... Well, I'll have to say, I'm just glad you're sleeping with someone from Konoha." Shizune murmured, trying to be as vague as possible while still getting her point across. She hated lying to the people who trusted her, and she did always feel a little better after admitting it to someone. She wasn't used to keeping secrets. As she spoke, she moved on to Hinata's other arm, green chakra healing as she went.
Hinata coloured at the words, still unused to anyone saying it out loud. She nodded, eyes wide in embarassment. "H..hai..." Biting her lip, she fidgeted with the hem of her shirt with her now-healed hand. "I....I couldn't think of.....it being anyone.....but Neji-niisan.....is...is that bad?" She could tell that Shizune was still keeping something from her, but she let it drop. Afterall, she knew how it felt to love someone you weren't supposed to and to keep it to yourself. Afterall, she was in love with someone who hated her.
"... Of course it's not bad." Shizune shook her head. "... it's much better than, well... it's much more preferrable to sleeping around or anything like that." Her shoulders were tensing. Much better than sleeping with the enemy.
She turned even brighter red at that thought. Sleeping with ONE person was embarassing enough, she didn't understand at all how someone managed to juggle multiple persons. Nodding quickly, she tried to find some way to change the subject. "I...I'm sorry that I didn't tell anyone where I was going....are you mad?"
"... not mad so much as worried." Shizune was a bit relieved that the conversation was slowly moving. She didn't know if Hinata had understood exactly what she'd said, but either way... it made no difference.
The girl nodded, watching Shizune's pale green chakra suffuse her arm and trying to ignore the nausea that seemed to blossom in her stomach as the energy mingled with her own. Healing shouldn't make you nauseated... maybe I'm just THAT tired... She swallowed, face a tad pale, and nodded. "I'm sorry....I..I didn't want Neji-niisan to try and follow me. I...I don't want to have it fail and him know about it. I....is that wrong of me, do you think? I just.... I feel as though if he finds out that I might be able to remove the juunin, that if I fail it will hurt him so much more then anything else."
Shizune noted Hinata's reaction to her chakra, studying the girl's face for a moment. She was a tad pale, a little sick looking. Her eyes flickered back a few times between her own green chakra and the girl's arm, noting the chakra burns she was healing and the information clicking into place. "You might want to ask Neji to see to your chakra system." She noted, nodding at the girl's words. When ninja knocked their chakra systems out of sync, usually by overwork, she would send them to a Hyuuga elder for healing. But without an elder here, she assumed Neji would do.
Hinata nodded, starting to look a little green. "I....I think I'm gonna be sick....."
Noting the green tinge in Hinata's face Shizune lunged to the side, grabbing for a bag she used to dispose of used needles and the like, handing it over quickly.
Hinata managed a grateful look to Shizune before she surrendered to the nausea and parted ways with her breakfast. Breathing heavily for a moment, she wiped her mouth and swallowed, frowning at the taste in her mouth before she carefully tied up the bag and placed it into the trashcan at the end of the couch. She blushed slightly, and nodded to Shizune. "Th...thank you....I'm sorry....I...wasn't expecting that...."
"It's alright." Shizune murmured, brushing a few strands of hair away from the girl's face. "It's a common reaction if you overuse your chakra system." It didn't bother her, she saw a lot of it at the hospitals in Konoha. She had finished healing anyway.
The girl nodded, raking indigo bangs from her eyes. She should have known that, she had done enough healing of others with the same malady before. In fact, she was often the one who did the healing when the elders were busy. But she couldn't heal herself. And that meant that Neji would have to do it. She swallowed, feeling especially apprehensive about facing him. She knew he wanted to talk to her about something, and she had dodged him up until now, sure that he wanted to chastize her about that weekend and the events that had transpired. "Is....is Neji-niisan...mad at me?"
Shizune rocked back onto her heels, placing the towels back into the basin of now cold water. "... I don't know, Hinata." She answered truthfully. The idea of the two of them... she just hoped Neji would be understanding. "You'll have to ask him yourself, I think."
She nodded slowly. "I....he said he wanted to talk to me....before I left to go training. I...I ran. I'm afraid. Afraid of what he's going to say. And...I wonder if he's mad at me because I didn't meet him.."
"Well... I'm sure he's upset you didn't speak to him." Shizune said, standing and walking to the kitchen as she spoke. "... but if you, well, you don't want to tell him, but if you told him you were training perhaps he'll understand?" She was dumping the dirty water down the sink, rinsing the towels.
Hinata nodded. "Maybe...." Steadying herself with one hand on the couch, she swung her legs off of the edge, planting bare feet on the carpet. Taking a deep breath, she pushed herself off of the couch, grabbing her head as the world swam again and she sat back down hard, curling up on the couch as the dizziness returned.
"You want me to walk you back to your apartment?" Shizune returned to the couch, holding out her hand.
She stretched out a shaking hand to take Shizune's offered one. Yes, perhaps it was best that she didn't try and do this on her own. Nodding, she used the older woman's leverage to stand up again, leaning against the taller kunoichi. "Th..thank you..."
"My pleasure." Shizune would normally insist the girl stay... but the way matters stood she thought it best no one be near the Sound apartment tonight.
