Aww, right? ♥ :D
It was a strange ending, to say the least. Not to say that he believed this an ending, for it was simply another step into a future unknown, just as his arrival here had been, but.. for certain people, a time of beginning, and a time of understanding. There was, however, something to say about being capable of giving your life for someone and still being able to exist as he did. Unfortunately for him, he was created as a god. He was an incomplete one, but one nonetheless.. or at least, so he would believe himself to be.
But now.. in all this time, and in this place, he had had the liberty to fathom himself human.
There were three people in the entire world now, who could bring that feeling back.
And two of them, he was leaving behind.
Two of who, he had seen to. And one.. the remaining jewel for last, he said. His wing folding behind him as he landed in the vast space of the garden where he had first set eyes upon the boy, the boy who would inevitably become one of his reasons for smiling here.. he knew that this meeting would last in his memories, and reality, forever.
And so, he waited.
Roxas hadn't believe it at first that Sephiroth was leaving. That Vincent had left, and his own work was done. Completed without a hitch. Though he wished, somewhere deep down inside, that he could have stayed in that little world forever.
At first, it was strictly business. Nothing more, nothing less. Just a reason to get money and make sure Sora didn't whine too much about there not being any food around. It was just a job, just a silly outfit he had to wear, and basically had to somewhat babysit a full grown man. But soon, it became different, as if the tables had turned and Roxas almost felt like Vincent was taking care of him. That the words Sephiroth said sounded kinder, soft spoken, and not as rough around the edges as his words had once held.
He wished, sadly, that they could have stayed like that longer. For Roxas to come over just to be over, and feel like... like maybe he was a real kid. Not a Nobody, but somebody who had parents. A home. Sure, he considered the apartment that he had with Sora as a home of sorts, but it wasn't the same.
And as Roxas stepped outside and made his way on over to Xanadu, he couldn't help but not ignore the tightening in his chest. It hurt so much that he had to place a hand over the heart that never was there, to grip onto the material of his shirt in hopes that it would stop somehow. It was silly to be acting this way. But he couldn't help it.
As soon as he approached the endless field of flowers, Roxas stopped a good amount of space between them, simply to watch him quietly in hopes that maybe, just maybe, he would change his mind. That maybe he was just playing a prank of some sort.
Wishful thinking, he soon realized, as soon as he continued walking so he could clear the distance between them.
The battle he had requested at sunset was one thing. He owed those children, but this.. there were no words to how difficult this had become. Many times after the course of ending those battles, he had thought and thought again. Perhaps, perhaps he could take Roxas with him. He didn't deserve to be here. He could take him to Gaia. Vincent was there, he was certain, and this he said with assurity. Hell, Roxas' loudmouth companon Sora could come too. Granted Sephiroth wasn't exactly the best liked person in all of Gaia (what, after having nearly destroyed it twice..) but Vincent.. surely Vincent, as the savior who had done so much by destroying Omega itself.. surely under his name, he would be able to live peacefully?
He didn't know if it was possible. He had remained with Roxas enough to know the boy would probably not agree. And it stung to think of it, because the boy didn't deserve to be here. In this hell-hole of magic and nightmares. The boy who had ultimately come as close to him as.. perhaps, himself.
He wasn't sure if it could be so. He was afraid.
The Great General Sephiroth. Afraid. he laughed at himself, inside, before sensing that presence that he had become so accustomed to, it was as familiar as his own beating heart.
A heart not of it's own, but one that created itself within the presence of love.
"I knew you wouldn't make me wait. As always.. you are efficient." slowly, the silver-haired man turned, settling his emerald gaze apon the boy. When he turned fully, he took a moment to reflect on how much, in this short time, the boy had begun to mean to him. And it was frightening.. he had never felt this much at a loss before. Taking slow steps towards him, Sephiroth stood before him, merely taking in his appearance. Then, extending his gloved hand, he touched the side of the boy's face and knelt before him, so they could be at eye level, his pale face hiding all emotion that should have not been seen then, and continued to look into his eyes.
"I'm sorry I called you at such short notice. But if it wasn't to be now.. it'd never be. Or perhaps.. who knows." he chuckled to himself, thumb trailing over the boy's cheek and the corners of his mouth twitching into a small smile.
"Forgive me."
The words came out in a soft whisper before he could stop himself. Sephiroth, the man who had brought Marluxia to his knees by the power of words alone.. was now apologising to a boy, who, by all means should not have felt those words. Yet Sephiroth knew how it was to be treated as differently..
And he had hoped, he could have taken it away from Roxas. Hoped..
There were times where, as weird as it might have seemed, Roxas just wanted to run away. He had, in his short lifetime, done just that, be it his own free will or under the influence of a higher power. Uncontrolled, without him even knowing it.
And now, a part of him wanted to take those steps backwards and pretend this never happened. That there was nothing wrong, that these feelings and emotions were but a rough sketch of Sora's. The boy who was quite oblivious to what was going on around him, and something Roxas didn't want to explain to him. It would be pointless, in a sense.
But as Sephiroth swooped down in one fluent motion, just so he could be able to look Roxas in the face and gently touch him with kindness that the blond wasn't quite used to, he knew it was worth it. Whatever kind of pain (that shouldn't have been there) that he'd felt? It was worth it. Because soon those memories would blossom into good ones. And Roxas knew he would be able to laugh and speak freely of them once the tightening and hurt melted away.
Roxas wasn't a normal child, though. He knew when he had to let go of things, and this was one of those times.
Shaking his head after a moment or two, Roxas, as rare as it was, offered a smile of his own. A true one, really, which were ones he didn't offer freely. But here he was, giving one to somebody he barely knew, though as the same time felt like he had known him for years and beyond.
"It's... alright," he began, honestly feeling that this was true. "I understand... to an extent."
It was hard, talking. Goodbyes were never something he was used to doing. It was through Sora, a long time back, that he said goodbye to the life he once lead, with his friends that knew nothing about him anymore. He cried then, didn't he? It didn't strike him until then that it was so simple to do it, yet at the same time something that was so difficult to understand.
But he digressed. Now wasn't the time to express those feelings, as he held strong and knew that was the best way to cope.
Sephiroth had been worried, but the moment he received that smile, he knew he had been worrying for nothing. Or perhaps, worrying for to a reasonable extent. He knew leaving Roxas behind wasn't exactly something he wanted to do, ever, if possible, but he believed that somewhere, everyone had their own purpose to achieve. And Roxas.. regardless of all, would achieve his, in whatever way he could find it.
And when he heard those words, something stirred within his heart that signalled that things weren't as bad as he thought. That it would be alright. That there was still a chance he would take Roxas to Gaia someday.
So, when Roxas had spoken, Sephiroth merely gave him a smile as soft as Vincent's perhaps (that man.. he was ridiculously motherly, even though by gender, he wasn't..) and he lowered his hand to his shoulder. Holding him there for a while, Sephiroth lowered his head, and shook it gently, before raising his gaze back up to meet the boy's.
"What I shall tell you now, remains between us, Roxas. Perhaps.. some places, it is considered abnormal. And some accept it with open arms. Where I am going, I am uncertain. But for him, I would tear down the sky and stars if I had to. " he had never believed he'd speak with such sincerity, thank goodness Zack was no longer around. Or he'd get the biggest teasing of his life. "You said once.. that Sora is your 'Somebody'.. for me, that is what Vincent is. But more than that.. he is my Everybody. As corny as that may sound," 'corny'- now he was using childspeak. A small smirk settling on his lips, his gaze gentle, he pet Roxas' shoulder.
"The night before he left.. he was speaking to me. Asking.. if ever there was a chance.. if you.. and Sora would come to Gaia." he watched Roxas' expression carefully. "Never did either of us know, that escape would be so close that we would have no chance to ask you." he smiled wryly. "I suppose that's how things are. Now I have to go after him."
He fell silent for a while, then looked up at Roxas. "If the chance arises.. will you?"
