Log;

When Vala first woke that morning, she didn't realize right away she had no voice. After all, she had no reason to speak, having her own room, and, thinking of it, she had talked for nearly the entire day prior. Mostly to annoy the person who had been her 'master', but really, what had they expected? But all of that aside, she had shuffled to her bathroom for a shower first thing, assuming Jack might still be asleep (she had been up rather early, but her nights had been restless since Daniel left without saying goodbye), and she still had some shopping to do later. Mostly she was trying to stay busy to keep her mind preoccupied.

It was only upon treading to the kitchen to find Jack mysteriously absent that she discover her missing voice. She turned, opening her mouth to call out, see if he was home-- and nothing came out. Blinking, she tried again, and then three more times, but she was completely mute. Alarmed, and slightly annoyed, she exhaled harshly and moved from the kitchen. She couldn't shout for Jack, and his coat and shoes were still at the door, so he had to still be home. She just had to find him the manual way.

The fact that Jack was still in his room wasn't all that uncommon lately. He tried to avoid leaving it while Vala was home, wanting to give her the space she asked for, today being no different. Jack didn't notice anything different about himself that day, only that the feeling that he should talk to Vala was more pressing than usualy, but he just put that down to it being the holidays. Shaking his head, he looked up towards the door when he heard Vala walk past it down the hallway towards the kitchen. He waited a moment before standing and getting ready for the day. He gave it another few moments, and after nothing sounded from beyond the perimeter of his room, he figured she had left and finally emerged from his room.

Jack was over halfway down the hall when Vala turned down it, and as had become normal, a soft warmth blossomed in her chest as she saw him, and though she tried to push it away, it remained-- resilient and steadfast. But she didn't like to think about it. Ever since he had kissed her--

But that was beside the point at the moment. She knew he was home now, and though she wanted to talk to him-- or not talk, but tell him somehow that she had been afflicted with this bizarre curse, her resolve faltered a little. She had asked for space, but she definitely hadn't asked him to completely avoid her, barely exchanging a word with her. It sent a pang through her gut, the same kind she had every time Daniel had spurned her without jest in his tone. So, instead, she stepped slightly to the side, and made to brush passed him, hoping he might just think she had forgotten something in her room.

Jack managed to keep the shock from showing on his face at seeing Vala walking towards him down the hall. He was so sure that the silence in the appartment had meant that she had left, knowing that she had wanted to do some more christmas shopping. He didn't want to avoid her, he wanted the exact opposite, but when she had asked for time, he had to. Jack couldn't just stand by and pretend to be just her friend, pretend that the kiss had never happened. It had been a while since he had felt this strongly for someone, not since Sara.

The feeling he noticed earlier that morning flared as Vala stepped past him. He couldn't stop himself. He reached out and grabbed her wrist tightly, stopping her in mid-stride. He didn't at her, couldn't look at her.

Vala visibly started, a jolt shooting up her arm where Jack firmly snagged her wrist. Wide eyes stared first to the point of contact-- he hadn't talked to her, never mind touched her in almost anyway since the Gala. Slowly she looked up at him through her lashes, and the smallest of frowns curled her lips as she noted he wasn't looking at her. Concern flickered through her eyes, but she stood stock-still, watching his face and waiting apprehensively for his next move.

Jack stood there, just grasping her wrist, face turned away. He knew what was going to be said as soon as he opened his mouth, he could feel it. He didn't want to confess, not now, not wanting to scare the woman off. He knew how she felt about Daniel, and that he was the someone else she had mentioned a few weeks earlier. Jack closed his eyes as the sounds he didn't want to release came out, "I love you."

I love you..?

Her entire body seized up, a string of emotions ricocheting so quickly through her body that at first she didn't even notice her jaw drop. Once the words registered a second time, everything funneled down to fight or flight. No. He-- She couldn't. It was terrible enough that she was in love with Daniel. And even though he was gone-- she couldn't hear this now. One was bad enough, even if he didn't love her back.

And still part of her had melted when he said it. That someone could-- No! Love was--

She started shaking her head in response to her thoughts, mouth opening to refute his claim. He couldn't love her. He couldn't because that would mean what she was-- Shaking her head again, she tugged on her wrist, trying to get away.

Jack's grip on her wrist tightened when she tried to tear herself away from him. He couldn't let her go, wouldn't let her go. He didn't know why he needed her to hear this, but he couldn't stop himself. Probably some curse. It had to be, if it wasn't Jack would've waited until she thought everything through. He opened his eyes and finally looked at her. Saw her shaking her head, mouth open, but refusing to say anything, not knowing that she was cursed as well today. All he saw was her trying to get away from him. He needed her to hear this.

He tighten his grip a fraction more and pulled her close to him. He release his grip on his wrist and brought his other arm up. Placing his hands on her shoulders, he pushed her back until she was up against the wall, and held her there, blocking her from leaving, "I know about Daniel. And damnit-" He couldn't finish his thought, couldn't find the words to say what he wanted.

Her breath caught when he backed her suddenly against the wall, and reflexively her hands shot up to grab below his elbows. He was stronger than her, but she was smaller, and more nimble, and if she really wanted to she could have gotten away.

But she didn't try. Instead she closed her mouth, pursing it into a thin line, brows diving into something of a defiant look. But laced beneath it was an undercurrent of anxiety. Whatever he was going to say, she didn't want to hear it. She had a feeling it would be big, something important that was going to change everything. Vala wasn't afraid of a lot of things, but situations like this-- they frightened her. She stared hard at him, almost daring him to say whatever it was.

He let go of one of her shoulders and punched the wall behind her. He growled softly in his throat, still trying to fight whatever it was that was making him say all of this now. He looked her in the eye, saw the resolve in them. Suddenly, he sighed, the tension leaving his body. His head fell as he closed his eyes once again. "Daniel didn't treat you the way you deserve to be treated." His voice was soft, but his words clear. With the words out he lifted his head and gently caressed her cheek, "But I could."

Vala didn't even flinch as his fist hit the wall, although she felt the impact all the way down her core and into the pit of her belly. But what stole her breath was Jack's words. Because, loathe as she was to admit it, he was right. At least... he hadn't been friendly while they were here and... all coherent thought fled as his fingers touched her jaw. The defiance vanished from her face, replaced with a strained sort of awe. But she couldn't respond, neither vocally nor physically, and she was as still and quiet as she had ever been in her entire life.

Jack kept his hand where it was, his fingers lightly stroking back and forth along her jaw. He stared at her for a long moment, waiting for some sort of reaction. He sighed softly and moved in closer, pressing his lips to hers in a chaste kiss. Pulling back, he licked his lips and pressed his forehead to hers. "Say something..." He pleaded softly, whatever it was affecting him today making him say all of his thoughts aloud. He needed her to react to what he was telling her.

Dark eyelashes fluttered with the chaste kiss, and she wished she could answer, or straighten out her thoughts and be able to give him some sort of response. But he was so close, and all there was was his voice and his touch and she was suffocating, drowning. She swallowed against the lump in her throat, and her hand came off of his elbow. She shook her head just the slightest bit, and curled slender fingers to her throat, mouthing to him 'I can't speak.'

Jack sighed and closed his eyes. Of course this would happen. Both of them cursed on the same day with different curses. He being forced to reveal everything to her, and she not being able to talk. He chuckled softly at the situation. Only in The City could something this messed up happen. He looked back at her and caressed her cheek once again, "I'm sorry.." It was the only thing he could think of to say to her. He stepped back and let his arms fall, looking anywhere but at the woman he loved.

She shook her head when he apologized, but he didn't see it, having looked away. Her own gaze cut away, then, emotions in a turmoil. She felt like she might go crazy if she didn't go somewhere. Do something. Get away from this man, just for a few hours, so that she could sort out everything that had just happened. With a shiver, she pressed the heel of her hand to her forehead and bit her lip, willing him to go on his way and willing the tremble in her knees to stop so she could walk again.

Jack watched her for another long moment. The feeling that had been pestering him all morning gone now that he had told her everything. He reached out and ran his fingers through her hair. "You can have your space." He turned and walked down the hall towards the kitchen, leaving her to sift through her thoughts.
