Summary; Hotaru's addiction to the drug Itachi has been slipping into her tea finally rears it's ugly head after a fight with Archer. Hopefully, Shizune can change the flow of the tides.
Log;
Archer had Hotaru on his shoulder and was jumping from rooftop to rooftop to get to Shizune's apartment. He didn't like the way Hotaru had acted today. All over a cup of tea. It wasn't like her. Something was wrong, with her and the tea. When he reached Shizune's apartment, he stopped and calmly knocked.
The girl lay limply over his shoulder, slight body trembling as they moved. The trembling itself had intensified from a barel-noticable tremor in her hands to spasms that wracked her entire form with their violence. Black hair hung lank with sweat, sticking to her neck and to cheeks that were far too pale to be healthy. Dark circles had appeared around her eyes, and she whimpered slightly as her body's temperature began to rise.
Shizune had only sighed, rubbing her eyes when she'd recieved the news. ... Which had been right before she had her face over the toilet, heaving. Morning sickness... at night. Not the funnest thing. But still... she knew this was going to happen. God, she'd known the girl would end up at her door eventually. One guess as to who was to blame. The healer's money was on Itachi. Preparing her medical supplies while wiping her mouth, Shizune finally dragged herself to the door, opening it quickly before silently gesturing to the cot laid out in the center of the floor.
Archer nodded at Shizune. He felt a little bad because she was disheveled, but it seemed to be an emergency. He quickly trotted to the cot and gently laid Hotaru down. He noticed Hotaru moving earlier, so he took a quick precaution and pinned her wrists to the bottom of the cot.
She couldn't see. It was hot. So hot. And the world was shaking. She tried to open her eyes, but the colours bled into each other and swam in front of her. Panicking, she tried to back away from the turbulent ballet of bright lights and colours, but she couldn't move. With a panicked bleat of fear, she struggled, fighting against whatever force held her pinned to the surface. Whimpering unintelligably, her hysterical murmerings soon became full-blown panic as she started fighting him, trying to force her tremor-wracked body away.
Shizune went for the tranquilizers. Steadying her hand she motioned for Archer to hold the girl down so she could get a clean injection. She was obviiously delusional, that was clear, suffering what looked like withdrawel. But until the girl was calmed the medic could do nothing, merely prep the needle.
Archer slung his leg over, using his shin to hold Hotaru's legs still. He grabbed her wrists tighter, pushing them down with all his weight. Again, he nodded to Shizune.
She only fought harder, yelling in panicked delusion as she strained against his weight. Suddenly, her head snapped back, eyes rolling back in her head as her limbs stiffened before the spasms resumed. Only this time, it wasn't simple tremors. Whether from panic and hysteria, or the effects of the drugs, she'd slipped into a full-blown grand-mal siezure.
Shizune grit her teeth at the noise and added her own weight to the girl's arm, right abouve the elbow, waiting three seconds for the vein to turn blue from blood flow block before the inserted the needle as neatly as she was able, slowly injecting the sedative into the small girl. Before she could figure out what was going on she needed her quiet and not... in danger.
Archer stopped and waited. Hotaru seemed to be calming down. He turned his head to Shizune. "I hope you know what you're doing."
As the drug coursed through her veins, the spasms gradually ebbed to the tremors that they had started as. The stiffness in her body relaxed as she slumped against the cot.
Shizune let out a sigh, leaning back until her head hit the couch, hand still on the girl's arm, feeling her pulse. Feeling it slow, until it was indicative of true unconsciousness. Sitting up once more she winced at the urge to go be sick again. Now was not the time. "Of course I do." The medic assured Archer, hands beginning to glow green with chakra as she laid them on the girl's abdomen abouve the stomach, beginning to scan her system, first for drugs,
which is what the spasms had pointed to. Some sort of withdrawel. "I'm going to scan her now."
Archer nodded and released his hold on Hotaru. "Do what you need. I trust you in this."
"Thank you." Shizune would not deny she was irritated. She had know this would happen, she'd known it. But, of course, the girl hadn't listened. She would say she deserved it, but she was not that far gone from her normal self. And she closed her eyes... scanning... scanning... and then... there it was, the shock of the discovery registering clearly on her face.
Worry crossed over Archer's face. "What is it?!" Archer didn't want to seem frantic, but it was tough to hold back his feelings.
"It's..." Shizune had worry now showing on her face, shaking her head fitfully. "... I haven't seen this drug in a long time, not since the Cloud War..." She'd only been a young ninja then, but... she recognized this. "This drug was only experimental staged in my youth... it was used on captured shinobi. It's highly addictive... almost as dangerous to be addicted to it than to try and withdraw..." She was rapidly going through her medical bag, trying to find something. "... We can't just take her off this, we need to wean her." Her eyes met Archer, all seriousness. "Do you have any more of it?"
Archer paused. All she wanted was tea, so it had something to do with it. He would have to go back and find it. "It was what she used to make her tea. I can find it if neccessary."
Despite the sedative, as her temperature climbed higher, she stiffened and lapsed into another seizure, this one even more violent then the last.
"Let me guess who gave her that tea." Shizune said bitterly, finally coming up with what she had been looking for, just in time to witness the first seizings of the muscles. Cursing, Shizune hardly ever did that, she took out two small pills and held the girl's mouth open, moving her tongue and then inducing a swallow. It was slightly dangerous, but she only had this medication in pill form here, and she needed to stop the seizures- this medication would stop them for a few hours at least.
Archer's face suddenly became plastered with anger. His frown could have killed. "Uchiha Itachi."
Despite the effectiveness of the drugs, they would only work after they were absorbed by her body. Which meant time. Time that she didn't have. The seizure intensified, her eyes rolling back in her head, breathing catching as her overstressed heart's rate began jumping and slowing erratically. Fingers clenched and spasmed in the sheets of the cot, nails tearing through linen and digging into her palms to cut bloody crescents into her flesh as her back arched with the spasms. Struggling to breathe, she managed to choke out Archer's name before she lapsed back into unconsciousness as her heart faltered.
"Oh, I do not think so." Shizune practically snarled, the green chakra glow springing back to her palms, which slammed down onto the frail girl's chest, pumping a burst of chakra into the heart to break the seizing muscles hold, relaxing the wall of muscles in the chest to to leave the heart open to her chakra. She had a look of fierce concentration on her face, listening to the beats of Hotaru's pulse, firing bursts of chakra to beat the heart everytime it tried to get off rhythm, slowly moving the organ back to steady beats, a bead of sweat rolling down her face.
Archer just watched, incapable of anything. The only thing he could do is create medical instruments if she needed it, however he doubted that.
As the drug finally began to take effect, her heartrate steadied and the terrible spasms began to cease, her small body relaxing and fingers uncurling from their deathgrip on the bloodied sheets. The seizure relaxed back into the soft trembling muscular spasms that signified the withdrawal symptoms of the drug. She seemed to be breathing a little easier now as well, though her normally pale face was flushed, sweat matting her black hair to her head as the fever ran rampant through her brain.
Shizune leaned back again, digging through the medical bag and coming up with another needle that she quickly prepped, something to bring the fever down. The injection was quick and clean, and she wiped her forehead, leaning her face into her palms. The heart arythmia had drained her. The pregnancy already was messing with her chakra system, as the child's own chakra system was being formed, making her own slightly unpredictable, but she still had a lot to work with. "I need that drug. She's going through withdrawel."
"Alright." Archer dashed out of her room and went full speed back to the apartment. When he got inside, he looked around. It was obviously in the kitchen, but where? In a rush, he activated his enhanced vision. Looking at the floor, he spotted it. A small bit of powder from the tea. It lead to a drawer. He opened it up. CalebPrecto: Inside there wasn't much, but he continued to look. He pulled out a container and popped it open. "Bingo." Quickly he ran back to Shizune and offered the container to her.
Shizune had paced fitfully. Itachi was to blame, this was his doing, and even though the girl's easy manipulation had frustrated her, made her extremely anger when she was in a mood, she knew she couldn't quite blame her, which... also irritated her. She found a lot irritted her lately. And Kabuto leaving... hadn't helped. Shaking her head she tried to clear any signs of fatigue from her face when Archer returned, nodding to herself at the sight of the drug. This was it. She didn't know how, but it didn't surprise her that Akatsuki had made use of Kumogakure's experiments, this was extremely difficult to manufacture and cull. "How long has she been taking it, do you know? How many doses?"
Archer shook his head. "I haven't really noticed, however today she would have had 13 cups of tea if I didn't stop her."
"Thirteen?!" Shizune looked down at the black powder again, shining almost purple in some lights. Thirteen doses... that was almost... that was... this would be more difficult than she thought. "I'm going to have to purge her system. If this blocks something vital she'll die, withdrawel or no." The medic was worried. Purging with chakra could be difficult, as one had to take some of the damage into one's own chakra system to neautralize it. But... she couldn't refuse to do it. It wasn't right, not to treat someone to the best of her ability. It... she had faith enough in her own abilities to think she could handle it, keep it from harming her. "If you'd go get me a basin of hot water, there's a tub by the sink."
Archer ducked into the next room and grabbed the basin. He put it in the tub and filled it with hot water. He brought it back to Shizune and set it at her side without spilling a drop.
"Thank you." Shizune dipped her hands into the water, cleaning them of any traces of the black powder that may remain. "You'd best wash." She added to Archer. Even a whiff of the power into the nose could trigger an addiction. Finishing that task, she wiped her hands before lowering the cot, kneeling beside the unconscious girl, taking her ink and beginning to draw seals, all black characters around the cot and the girl's body, leading to a final seal, 'cleanse' in the middle of her pale forehead. "If I fall, I'll need you to hold me up during this." She stated calmly, though she was getting more worried. She liked to have seconds during difficult jutsu like this. But since Kabuto had left, she didn't have another competant chakra healer to support her. Not that he would now if he were here... she shook those thoughts, had to focus.
Although it was impossible for Archer to get addicted to anything, he did what she said. He then walked over and waited behind her, doing exactly as told.
She stirred slightly as the ink was applied, the black liquid running slightly as it mixed with the sweat on her skin. A spasm signalled the impending seizure, but it was thankfully held in check by the drugs in her system. That being said, it didn't completely stop the jerk of her limbs and the sudden arch of her neck. Relaxing again, she shifted again, murmuring Archer's name, fingers clutching slightly at the air as though seeking some sort of comfort.
Shizune took a deep breath, closing her eyes for a moment, preparing. Her hand hovered over her stomach for a moment, glowing briefly. A small protection, all she knew that could help keep the side effects of this jutsu from her unborn, help keep from confusing the child's developing chakra system from hers. And then her palms were on the inked in seals, her green chakra racing up the black to the foreheard, where the character began pulsing, slowly starting to dissolve. It was like diving into something deep and dark, her power racing through the girl, removing poison, clearing buildups, blockages. It drew the drug from her system, the inked in seals working to destroy it, characters slowly fading as they burnt themself out neutralizing the drug, though some managed to make its way back to the medic, who shuddered at the feel of the invasive medicine clashing against the chakra in her system. She was sweating heavily now, mouth open and breathing heavily. But this was only the beginning.
Archer didn't know much about this chakra, but he thought perhaps it was a lot like magic. It couldn't hurt to try to help her, since transferring mana from a servant was simple. He put his hand on her shoulder. Mentally, he traced what he thought was her magic circuit and injected some of his own mana. If it helped, he would continue with more.
At first, it was simple. Her wavering energy seemed to stabilize with the influx of chakra, breathing leveling and the tremors becoming less violent. But then, with a nearly audible snapping crackle, there was a backlash of power that erupted from her mind. The Saturn-power, angry and violent at the intrusion of the alien energy, thrust back against the chakra, trying to force the strange power from it's host. Black lightning crackled slightly as her hair began to stand on end, the sigil of Saturn blazing into being on her forehead.
Shizune gasped, eyes snapping open at the backlash of Saturn's power. Her seals began dissolving rapidly, assaulted both by the drug being pulled and the power of Hotaru, allowing more of the drug to go unfiltered back into Shizune, who began shuddering, eyes dilating. She felt a power behind her, tried to draw on it, but was only able to catch wisps to bolster her defenses and seals. It was similar, but not the same, and she couldn't quite grasp it. Gritting her teeth and squaring her jaw, the medic pulled from her chakra reserves, careful to stay clear of her unborn child's system, pushing back with her chakra through the seals, the symbol for cleanse fighting for dominence over the sign of Saturn.
Archer could feel it. He saw where his mana was going. He traced again, this time far more accurate. He efficiently began to pump more mana into her, hoping it would be enough to turn the tide.
The power refused to back down, fighting even harder. The bed began to rattle, the sigil on her forehead glowing brighter as her eyes snapped open, their normal violet colour drowned out by the purple glow that suffused them. The lightning hummed and crackled, snapping around her as the lights began to flicker on and off.
This power was beyond her. The medic's hands had... was that steam? The seals were burning away, smoke rising beneath her palms. She was trying not to make noise, that was undignified behavior for a jounin, but she couldn't help the low hiss escaping her lips, the power in the girl crackling about her hands, seeking to push her away even as she tried to push back, more of the drug pumping into her unfiltered. She knew if this kept up... she was timing, feeling the drug out. She only had one more minute before the levels would be too dangerous and she would have to stop the jutsu, stop the purge.
No. It couldn't end this way. Archer was feeling the dispair. He did the only thing he could think of. He jumped to the other side of Hotaru and laid down on the floor. He put his mouth as close to her ear as possible. "Hotaru. It's me, Archer. If you don't stop, you'll hurt me." He reached and grabbed her hand, hoping to calm her down.
Her eyelids twitched, the glow fading slightly from wide optics. Her fingers spasmed, clutching at his hand momentarily. And slowly, slowly, the Saturn power faded as it recognized his power interlaced with the strange new energy. As the glow finally faded from her eyes, the burning sign of Saturn faded away from her forehead and she slumped back against the pillow.
Shizune's panting for breath was the only noise. Breath. In. Out. Her eyes were taking a glazed quality, out of focus not only from her own drug take, but from the drain her chakra had taken from fighting the Saturn power. Had to finish, had to complete this. Couldn't lose a patient... she hadn't lost one in surjury in the past two years, a record for her, and she wouldn't break it now. Shivering, the medic pushed, trying in one last ditch attempt to drive the last bits of drug from Hotaru's system.
And then, as if in a felicitous turn of events or a brief respite from some onlooking god, the last remnants of the drug broke up, their components sliding seamlessly out of her system and leaving only the damage they had caused behind.
Shizune fell back, exhausted. Her eyes fluttered weakly as she tried to focus, but her chakra levels were dangerously low. One hand flew to her stomach as she grit her teeth, feeling a flash of pain, not only from the drugs, but... she would need to see Unohana immediately after this. But she had to finish. Moving as quickly as she could Shizune took a small dose of the drug, small enough only to barely register, mixing it into liquid and injecting it. That should keep the symptoms at bay for a while. Needed to wean her off. Then... Shizune looked at the powder. She had it in her system now, she... no, she couldn't wean herself, not with child. She'd need Unohana to try and purge her body. For now... she was exhausted.
Hotaru settled easily into a natural sleep as the drug sung through her veins, the tremors quelling. But, as the signs of withdrawal faded, her nightmares took hold. She didnt' wake, but her sleep became fitful as she shifted and twitched, tears leaking from the corners of her eyes occasionally.
Archer squeezed her hand, and the motion seemed to sooth her as she finally relaxed into sleep.
Shizune motioned to Archer to watch the girl. She... another wince at the pain in her belly. "I need to see a healer..." She whispered, voice hoarse. "Watch her."
Archer nodded, sitting back to watch over his young master as she slept.
