Summary; With Axel missing, Roxas goes out to find him, and runs into Envy instead. Abuse and angst follows.
Log;
There was still a lot of see in this city, Roxas realized. He glanced up at the opera building with a touch of awe. He turned away after a brief moment of watching, his goal still a bit hazy in his mind. He hadn't spoken to Axel in a while, neither had anyone seen him--or Hisoka for that matter; the thought perked both worry and a vague sense of anger, made him restless.
The walk was to cool his mind as much as it was a search for Axel--he hoped to return to the building before Sora discovered his absence.
"Hey~" A lazy drawl cut through the silence as the shadows began to shift, a figure peeling itself away from the darkness. Axel raised a hand in greeting as he approached. "Don't you know it's dangerous to walk alone at night?"
With his long legged stride he reached Roxas' side in little time, lanky figure rippling beneath the soft leather of his cloak. Then slowly, deliberately, a gloved hand reached out to trap the boy's chin, tilting Roxas' face up. "Miss me?"
It was mostly shock that greeted Roxas with Axel's sudden introduction, followed by wariness at Axel's touch. He stood his ground, however, even as a foot slid back on instinct, his shoulders tensing. "I'm fine. It's not too dangerous here."
Finally, he jerked his face away even as a quiet smile twisted at his lips at last. "Where were you?"
Holding both hands up in surrender, Axel allowed a grin to spread across his lips. "With Hisoka. I was going to stay away longer... but I missed you." His face softened as he took a step forward to match Roxas' retreat. "Aw, c'mon. Don't stay mad. I came back."
So adorable, hard to resist, and Axel gave in to temptation again. Weaving both hands into the wealth of blonde spikes, he cupped Roxas' face. This boy was made to be touched. "Did you miss me too?" Slender body bending at the hip, he leaned down to bring their faces close, waiting for an answer.
It was almost a blessing that breathing was not a required trait of Nobodies at times. Roxas tilted his head upwards at the same time his feet lifted a little to help with the difference in height. "... yeah. I did."
So then what to do now? With a smaller push to help close the distance, Roxas landed a quick kiss on the redhead's lips, pulling away just as fast. "Let's go."
"Well~ you do miss me." Eyelids that had been shut peeled open, but it wasn't the soothingly familiar jade irises beneath. It was red, crimson and sharp, brimming with malice barely concealed by the gentle fan of lashes. As Axel's mouth fell open to speak the voice was smooth, nasal as the words washed over Roxas' cheek with warm breath. "Too bad I left you behind. I'm not in this city any more, Roxas. ♥"
Sparks coursed in a quick current throughout Axel's body and the lanky form disappeared. In its place stood a more slender figure, heavy spill of black hair and ashen white limbs. "He's gone. Didn't he tell you anything?" Envy stretched like a lazy cat, easing into a casual slouch. "Poor, poor abandoned kitten."
Widening, narrowing, darkening--the change in his eyes happened in the fraction of a second that Roxas used to propel himself backwards. The formation of the Keyblades in his hands was nothing but instinct, the alarm and shock tickling the tips of his nerves, made his knees crouch slightly in a stance.
"You're ly--he--" Stuttering was not the best course of action, he knew, and so he slid back a few more steps, taking a deep breath. "--he's still here."
Raising a single, elegant eyebrow, Envy tilted his head, the heavy strands spilling like black ink over his shoulder. "Oh~ are you going to fight me? I'm not the one who left without notice." He began to move, like a predator stalking its prey, a slowly shortening circle. "I'm not the one who abandoned you in night, angry over something he had done as well. I'm not the one who didn't return when you were sick, not caring enough about your pain."
Then suddenly the homunculus came to a stop a safe distance away. A pale arm lifted, fingers sharpening into claws, and with an almost apologetic tone Envy soothed while stroking the tips along Roxas' bared neck. "I may have played a small part. But I honestly thought your relationship would have been stronger. I suppose..." Amusement crept into his voice. "It must be so easy to leave somebody behind if you can't really feel."
Denial served as a momentary defense before it shattered, leaving Roxas' hands to grow limp, his grip loosening, the Keyblades released, abandoned to never quite hit the floor before they dissipated. Not a good idea. But Roxas did not dare move with such claws close to his neck--an idle thought whispering: would Sora be able to leave the city if he died? It froze him.
He opened his mouth to argue, to say anything that might contradict Envy's barrage of facts; what he ended up voicing was a rather meek hiss. "... shut up."
"See?" Envy closed the short distance between them, nails shortening. "You can't even summon the words to defend him." The boy's face revealed weakness, cracks lining the walls that protected the mirage of false emotions, and Envy knew all he had to do was push. Strike with words to shatter it.
Might as well finish what he started.
"Is this friendship, Roxas? Is this love?" All the intent to attack seemed to bleed from slender form and Envy was soft, gentle as he stroked the Nobody's cheek with falsely sympathetic fingers. "How painful. Don't you think? What a lie."
"That doesn't matter." The words fell naturally from his lips. The pain--the light throbbing where he thought his (Sora's) heart would have been--was blunt, allowing him to briefly close his eyes and still gave him the ability to open them again. Roxas did not shy away from the touch any longer, instead choosing to stare, a flattened glare, a characteristic he hadn't displayed since the Organization's hold on his freedom. "It's still... real."
Feigned ignorance; it was better than amplifying the nagging discomfort at the traitorous agreements that his thoughts seem to have, resonating with Envy's words.
"Mmmm~" Envy curled his fingers around the slender neck, his other hand coaxing the boy's face up. Their gazes clashed. "Then that means the betrayal is real. You should know better than anyone Axel only thinks about himself. You're just another one of his possessions, easily thrown away, easily retrieved. If it's so easy for him to abandon the one most important to him..." Pressing a kiss against the corner of Roxas' mouth he purred, digging his nails past the film of skin, the sharp smell of blood bursting into the night air. "What about everyone else?"
The homunculus' form twisted suddenly, electric current almost painful in their proximity, and Sora now stood in his place. Azure gaze wide, he wrapped both arms around Roxas' neck. "You'll protect me, won't you?" Then leaning in, Sora traced the Nobody's bottom lip with a wet swipe of tongue, sucking it into his mouth, biting down with sharp white teeth. The coppery taste was quickly licked away with languid, easy strokes. "Right, Roxas?"
"He didn't abandon anyone!" A flash of anger, materialized Keyblades, halted strikes. Roxas could have swung--would have swung--had Envy chosen to steal another's identity, Axel or Hayner or even Namine; anybody else would have been fine. He stood rigid against Sora's duplicate, eyes screwing shut for a moment to wince at the half-kiss and the blood, throat squeezed inwardly to stop the automatic response to Envy's question uttered in Sora's voice.
Fingers curled tightly around Sora's--Envy's--shoulders, Roxas' returning glance was more akin to a glare and plea as he attempted to gain any form of separation between them. Followed by a snap, "Don't use his face." Then, as violent as Roxas could manage, he shoved away, stumbling backwards.
Sora took a step back to balance himself, laughing brightly at the weak propulsion and regaining his footing with little effort. "So cold, Roxas. What would you call his behavior then? Surely not friendship." Holding both arms out the boy flashed a lighthearted grin, misguiding warmth and curiosity on his round face. "We can't call such a weak bond friendship, can we? It's so easy for you and Axel to label what you have with words. But can you back it up with real emotions?"
Regaining his form, Envy began to dust himself off with mild distaste. The innocent, naive and angelic silhouettes were always his least favorite masks. "Run home, Roxas." The game was over for tonight. It wouldn't do if he played all his cards during the first round. "I promise you won't find Axel there, here~" Envy made a sweeping gesture at the buildings that surrounded them. "Or anywhere in this city."
"Even if he's not here now--" his voice was faint as he took two steps without turning his back to Envy, teeth gritted, "--he'll come back."
Cowardice was the least of his worries. Roxas spun around, darting towards the massive collection of people in Misery Square, towards the Fountain, and by extension, towards Building 12. Every point Envy had raised had been factual, but the negative connotation was all Envy's twisted way of viewing things. Roxas was content to just ignore it.
Pushing the door to room 999 open as quietly as he could, Roxas went straight to bed, wiggling into his spot beside Sora--and the missing Axel--and bid slumber hello as soon as he closed his eyes.
