Log;

Dim sunlight and chirping birds woke him up. He yawned once and stretched, which was a bit difficult because he was wrapped in someone's arms. In really huge and strong arms, though they merely belonged to Maria. Even that was unknown to him now, he just recognized it was some woman. Spontaneously he liked her, though he couldn't even tell what her name was. He couldn't even tell if he ever met her before, although he had vague memories about her. However, those memories were an entirely adult thing, and his now approximately 5 year old mind couldn't handle this at all and it vanished from his brain as useless information.

Kiddie Jyabura struggled with himself. Staying with this girl to cuddle on? She was warm and... squishy. Really squishy. No idea what those bumps on her chest were, but he liked them instantly. Or getting up to eat something? He was really hungry and gave up the need to cuddle when he heard his own stomach growl. Carefully he wrapped himself out of her hug and got up, wearing the crimson red dress of his childhood, but not before cautiously and curiously poking the squishballs again. Fascinating. They were wobbling and warm and all in all pretty awesome, not only as a pillow.

Abrupt he stood up and ran down the stairs to the kitchen, not even trying to be silent. Well, this certainly wasn't Enies Lobby. The lack of the salty scent of the ocean startled him but also assured that he wasn't at home. Loudly he searched and rumbled around in the kitchen, searching for anything edible in the fridge. He found nothing, which meant: no candy. Disappointed he closed the door with an annoyed grunt and climbed up a chair at the kitchen table. When will girly wake up to make food?, he thought, when some bottle caught his attention. What was that? Jyabura climbed the table and reached for the bottle. Smells nasty. Icky. Eww. He remembered. It's what men drink, true men. Therefore, it was okay to drink. All about logics! He took some sips and made a face that not really expressed approval. However, he managed to drink about a third of the sake before it started to make him feel, well, not good. "That's... gross!" he shouted.

God. Somebody shouting... so early... in the morning...
Maria turned her back to the opened door, wrapping herself up in the blanket. But that didn't help, now that she was already awake. Unsuspectingly, she eyed out of the blanket and was confronted with an alien, yet strangely familiar place. I'm dreaming, she drearily thought. Again, she turned, almost getting tangled up. Some birds screamed their lungs out in front of the window, leading Maria to wonder where Vincent was. Probably out of earshot. Otherwise, he would have thrown rocks at the birds. Or at that... screaming downstairs. Lucca, maybe. Or maybe he wasn't even there, because she was still dreaming. But was she..?
Leaving the sheets behind, she stumbled out of bed and almost fell flat on the floor. Her desire for hot cocoa instantly rised, so she decided to make her way to the kitchen. Wherever the kitchen in this place was. Maybe they had had to escape again whilst she was sleeping. Some mean people were always about to chase the family around. Bah.
Quietly, she crept down the stairs, just like Pascal had taught her. When being alone, quietness was very important, especially in a foreign place. Because one could never know if some mean people were around.
She popped her head into the kitchen, just to find a complete stranger sitting at the table. Frightened, she retracted, hoping he hadn't already seen her. But now that she thought about it, he didn't seem to dangerous. About her age, perhaps a bit younger. She drew a quick breath and stepped onto the kitchen door's threshold.
"Chi sei?" She asked accusingly, seeming a bit more courageous than she actually felt. Though he didn't look like he actually understood. That increased the danger because the mean people usually didn't understand Italian. Still, the danger was on a very low level. She just felt it.
"Who are you? And where is everybody?" She craned her neck but couldn't see somebody familiar except that stranger who actually seemed at least a bit familiar. Maybe the son of one of her father's visitors?

Jyabura had more felt than actually heard or seen her, so when Maria hid for a moment, he turned around to face the threshold and the girl that suddenly stepped in. He frowned because he could have sworn there was no one around except him and that woman. Where did she suddenly pop up from?
“What?” he replied sceptically and slightly grumpy, indeed not understanding the weird language the girl talked in. Luckily he was too young to know Lucci. Or rather, at that age of his, Lucci wasn’t even born yet. Otherwise Italian wouldn’t have been exactly the best language to use for a first contact with Jyabura...

He put back the bottle on the table as he didn’t intend to drink of this gross stuff again anyways and turned around on his chair some more, just to give her the unfriendliest glare he was able to. “Who are you?” he snapped askant and didn’t even care that she was elder and a bit taller than him. He just didn’t like that she seemed to have escaped his nose, but talking of that... Why did the girl have the same scent as the woman?! That couldn’t be. Everyone has his own scent and there’s even a clear difference in scent between a mother and her daughter, so that possibility got sorted out.

His anger vanished and changed place with utter confusion. First the lack of sea water, now that... He climbed off the chair and crossed his arms while looking at the girl. “I am Jyabura” he said, still sceptically and actually a bit startled because of the whole scent-thing. “...I don’t know where they are” he answered, but of course meant completely different people than Maria before adding “Did you shrink or something?” Curiously he approached her with his arms in his sides, looked over her and weirdly enough, scented her like a hound, but in respectable distance. Well, no doubt, same scent. Meant same person. “Can you do magic? How did you do that? Do you have candy?!”

"Shrink? Magic? What are you talking about? I can't do that! I would if I could."
Though Maria somehow managed to dig up a dim memory of this place, from quite a different perspective. Taller. But now, she didn't have the time to think about that, she just stared at the boy going nose-al. Could he really smell her like that?
"What is it? Wh-what are you sniffing at?" She nervously asked and eyed Jyabura. Then, she raised an arm and held it under her nose, briefly pausing before carefully sniffing it. "Do I smell bad? I can't smell a thing. I don't smell of candy, do I? I don't have candy, therefore..."
If he really was a visitor, maybe she should offer him some sweets. Treat your visitors always nicely was a very important rule in the house of Santargo. Probably because some visitors weren't going to leave this house alive. However, Maria just knew sometimes visitors strangely disappeared before she could say good-bye. How rude!
"... we should go and search for some," she then boldly declared. Few seconds later, she started rummaging through the cupboards in the kitchen. The lower ones, as she wasn't tall enough to reach the higher ones. She had to ponder about whether to climb them or not. Yeah, if I could do magic, she thought, I wouldn't have to think about that!

“B-but you did shrink!” the boy protested with hands clenched to fists at the side of his body and was close to distrust his very own nose and any other sense that at least seemed to be left. Confused he tilted his head to the side and frowned once more while crossing his arms. “No no, not bad. You smell... quite good. Like... cherry...!” he pondered and felt a bit stupid for telling something to a girl. He felt always so terribly uncomfortable and awkward around girls, but not because he disliked them, rather because of the opposite. Something that wouldn’t change in the next (or... past?) almost 40 years.

Uncomprehending he watched her roaming through the kitchen for candy. She didn’t seem to be a pirate, at least, and that was good. “There is no candy here...” he said with a tone of pity in his voice and a fitting expression in his face. “Over here” he said and grabbed her by the hand, having quite the physical strenght for a runt and trailed her up the stairs, unerringly directing towards Kaku’s room.

Jyabura pushed the sliding door out of the way and let Maria’s hand go to cautiously take a look into the room. Another very familiar scent he instantly liked, but he couldn’t sort it to a face. Somehow, it was new but very well known the same time too. He stepped in and cleared the way through videogames, clothes and some other signs of a minor mess lying around towards a wardrobe. “Candy” he dryly stated and turned around. “In here” he added and pointed his finger towards the wardrobe. “I smell it.” He opened the wardrobe with some ado and freed the sight to an impressive amount of chocolate bars, chips, sweets and candy of all imaginable kind. Obviously Kaku’s wardrobe, but luckily the keeper of that treasure wasn’t at home. “Told you so, um...” he said and suddenly seemed to brood over something. “What was your name?”

"Whoah!" Maria simply stated when seeing the massive stock of delicious treats.
"You sure have an awesome nose!" She then claimed, instantly forgetting she actually had wanted to offer him some candy. Not that he couldn't help himself, anyway. Instead, she grabbed a strawberry candy bar, advertised by a pink plastic wrapper and teared it open. Half of the bar already in her mouth, puffing her cheeks from the inside, she somehow managed to pronounce her name, or at least give it a try.
"Mawia Lowahnse."
After swallowing the big piece of candy, she said her name again. Comprehensibly, this time.
"Maria Laurence. But I don't like my second name. It's... awkward. Doesn't match Italian at all, don't you think so?"
Her mind jumped a bit while she was analysing the pink wrapper. Well, analysing is maybe a word too big for what she did, but at least she examined it carefully.
"Whose candy is this, anyway?" Sudden guilt rushed in, making her blush. "My brothers don't like candy. Except for Lucca. He's too young to hide such an amount, though!"

The boy with the awesome nose sat next to Maria in tailor seat and grabbed a handfull of gummy strawberries which ended up in his mouth very quickly. He started eating some massive chocolate bar while listening to the girl. Once again he frowned while she was talking. He had a deja-vú, the strong feeling to know Maria from somewhere and sometime... But damned if he could tell. “M-Maria?” he repeated with moutfull of chocolate and tilted his head. With his candy-free hand he scratched his head thoughtfully and confused, then shrugged. There was no way he could explain that feeling, but it was unimportant.

“What?” he then asked. “I don’t know. I like your name. What is Italian? Is it some island on the Grandline? Never heard of it!” he added before finishing his chocolate bar to grab for another. Not that there wouldn’t be enough to feed both of them for days. “Hm, I don’t know... now it is ours. Are we on still on Enies Lobby? Are you a Marine?” he babbled between some hungry bites into his chocolate. It made the disgusting taste of sake disappear on his tongue. How ironic that in a few year his tastes will become the complete opposite. The boy noticed her blush, but he felt no guilt at all. He found the candy a fair way and there was nobody here to defend it, so screw the guy who let it lie around here that loosely, he thought. Still, her unease made him uncomfortable, too.

“D-don’t be worried!” he said, but looked nervous and scared by himself. Not because he feared to get caught, but because Maria seemed so worried. “I will protect the candy and you. I am a wolf, you know?”

"I don't have a clue where we are," Maria shyly admitted. Jyabura's questions had left her a bit puzzled.
"You don't know Italian? Are you serious? They speak it where I come from, in Italy! My father says I should be very proud to descend from there, but I don't understand why." This remark led her to frown. However, few seconds later she shrugged that off, distracted by the other things Jyabura said.
"A wolf...? They called my oldest brother wolf, too... But most of the time, they say he's a devil. He's crazy." Maria raised her hands to emphasize this, after stuffing a chocolate chip cookie into her cheeks like a hamster. "If he gets angered," she continued, crumbling all over the floor, "he throws rocks and beats up his friends!"
She dragged her hands closer, as if to shield her body with her arms.
"He's very tall and scary. Will you protect me from him, too?"
Precisely, she looked over Jyabura, a stinging sense of recognition somewhere back in her mind. And suddenly, it occurred to her that maybe a five-years old couldn't take a boy about six years older on, especially not if the name of the older boy was Vincent and said boy was angry. Still, she had the undeniable, albeit vague feeling that Jyabura could protect her from anyone.

Jyabura stopped stuffing himself with candy, because he had eaten twice the amount than Maria had. Maybe because he at least eats twice as fast, just like a, well, wolf... There was still much candy left.
“Naw...” he said after a brief moment of pondering. “That Italy, never heard of that island” he said and sat back, full and full of candy. The description of her brother lead him to confusion. “A wolf? Devil? Did he eat a Devil’s Fruit too?” he asked her, not even thinking a second about the possibility that they could be from entirely different worlds. With raising sorrow he noticed that Maria got scared and nervous.

Before he could tell her his thoughts and ask her if she maybe was from a family of pirates, her question startled him and grabbed him effectively by every instinct. Somehow it made him feel honoured. A slight blush covered his face, another habit that will stay life-long. Then the boy’s expression changed to pride and self-esteem. It was not faked, there was no sign of fear anymore. It simply was part of his training in the Government. If somebody tells you from a very young age that you are strong, stronger than anyone, you will believe it sometime. And if they train you that in a merciless and violent way from childhood on, physical pain is no matter anymore. Of course, in his current age he maybe was stronger than any other toddler, but miles away from the strenght he will gain as an adult.

“Of course I will!” he said with the intent to sound soothing, but pride and some grain of arrogance were more part of his personality. “No one will ever harm you!” he added and quickly changed shape to wolf form. Or rather... puppy form. A grey, fluffy puppy in normal size with whimsically huge paws. Really, not intimidating for even the split of a second. The cub lumbered towards the girl, trying to snarl and ruffled up his fur, giving everything to look like a big bad wolf, but blatantly failed. “I’m gonna bite him!” the puppy said in human language and crouched, ready to jump towards any opponent.

At first, Maria blankly stared at that... puppy that Jyabura suddenly had become, eyes widened.
"H-how..."
Back in her world, transformators like that were somehow present, but not known to her. So it pretty much stunned her to see a boy turning into a wolf. Well. Wolf cub.
"You're the one doing magic here!" She then claimed in an almost infuriated manner. She didn't mean to attack him, though. It was the positive, "Ha, I'm having a point right now!"-kind of anger. She almost instantly forgot it, anyway. Instead, she asked:
"May I pet you, Jyabby? May I? May I? May I? Please! Puh-leeez! Pretty puh-leez with sugar on top!"

Jyabby?! The puppy was confused, because this wasn’t the reaction he expected from someone when he just turned into a wolf. No no, nobody should get the urge to pet a wolf! A werewolf! A big bad mighty werewolf! He underlined his thoughts with barking. Or yelping, rather. Um, that sounded a bit odd. And hasn’t the perspective changed too?

This was pretty much the first time when he realized he’s not really big and bad as a wolf. Instead he was small and short and very fluffy. Anything but big and bad, seriously. “It’s not magic!” he answered a tad sulking. “I ate a Devil’s Fruit! Now the wolf resides inside my body!” he continued to explain and wondered how she couldn’t know that from the beginning. Wasn’t it obvious? Any person with some odd ability ate some Devil’s Fruit. The puppy sat down and sulked. Not towards Maria, but towards his own tinyness. Someday, he thought, I will become really big and really strong.

“A wolf is not to cuddle!” he defended his honour and would have blushed if he only could in that shape.

"But the wolf is not inside your body!" Maria insisted.
"Ooobviously, it's outside quite right now!" She smart-alecky remarked. "I mean, I can see that. And it makes me want to cuddle you nontheless. Because you're cute."
And because that was, she told herself, what cute wolf cubs existed for.
"So come on, puhleeez? Do me that favour! In return, I'll do you one, too!"
You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. A lore well taught and handled in the Famiglia.

The cub would have blushed some more if he could. He had the faint idea that Maria didn’t quite get he still stayed the same person, wolf or not. That made it all so embarassing.

But when she mentioned a favour in return, he tilted his head and flicked his ears. “You will? Everything I want from you? Seriously?!” he yelped and planned it already inside of his head. “If you’ll really do me a favour in return, I will let you...” he added mysteriously and wagged with his tail, trying to look the cutest and fluffiest possible, just so she couldn’t resist anymore and he’d get his favour in return for sure.

"Of course I'll do you a favour! I promise!" She claimed.
"And Santargos always keep their words." Well, except not. But Maria just disregarded that. Exceptions.
"Now can I? Can I can I can I?"
Her hands already moved dangerously close to the cub, ready for a grab-attack. Seconds later, she tugged the puppy closer, placed it on her lap and launched a frontal cuddle assault.
"Fluffyyy!" She sighed and fondled those so very fluffy ears just before squeezing the wolf cub again.
"So," she said and patted Jyabura's fuzzy head, "what did you want in return..?"

As much as he disliked the whole concept of it, it wasn’t bad. No, seriously. It wasn’t bad at all. Some frenetic wagging and slight, very slight yelping, underlined that. Why was something that good even forbidden?, he thought and couldn’t figure out the logics for that. Except that it maybe looked pretty embarassing.

Obviously happy, but also confused as stuck in his conflict of thinking of this as good or rather embarassing, the cub gave the girl a satisfied look and wagged his tail some more. But now when it finally was favour-return time, he hesitated. “Um... is it my turn already, yes?” he procrastinated and jumped off Maria’s lap to shapeshift back into human shape, much to Maria’s pity, he assumed.

“Now, uh...” he started, still sitting on the floor and scratching over the scar across his eye, which seemed pretty fresh in that age. “Would you, I mean... I want you to, um...” he continued and suddenly hid his face behind both of his hands. “Would you kiss me?”

Slightly confused by this question, Maria's face went blank for a second.
"You?" She asked as if she had to reassure herself. A blatant "No!" was already residing on her tongue. She liked Jyabura too much, though, because he seemed so familiar...
"B-but--" The blank face instantly blushed. He's a... he's a boy! Still, he did her a favour, so she had to return this. And after a bit of fighting herself, she managed to silently ask herself: What's wrong about kissing a boy?
"I mean... uh, if you want..." She didn't look straight at Jyabura for she was too insecure now, making her almost seem shy.
"A small one, maybe..." She mumbled.

Shyly her future kissing partner looked to her between his fingers that hid his face nervously. “Y-yeah I want!” he stuttered, trying to sound self-assured, but felt like the complete opposite. “P-p-please?” he added quickly, as he didn’t mean to sound rude. Not towards Maria.

“Y-yes, a small one, exactly. But... on my mouth!” he suddenly claimed and almost excepted a good slap in the face. “You promised it, yes?” he made sure to get his favour already. “B-but I don’t know how to!” he admitted and felt like a big idiot. Didn’t he want to protect her and all? And he didn’t even know how to kiss a girl! And obviously, that girl wasn’t even too fond of the whole idea!

“Do you?”

"I... I think so. I mean, you..." Scratching her head, Maria hesitated.
"I mean, you pucker your lips, I pucker mine and, well, they touch..?"
Slowly, she blinked.
"It's, like... I heard of that once. Or maybe twice. They say it works by itself if one just... starts."
She leaned forward.
"But you have to close your eyes!" She insisted.

Jyabura listened to her with a pretty much startled expression. Cold sweat ran down his face and his eyes were wide open when he listened with surprise what Maria just told him. Uh, why did he want a kiss from her again? It sounded so... exciting. But in a scary way. He heard people talk about it like it was great, but now he almost regretted what he claimed as a favour.

“Wha-?! OK!” he answered surprised when she suddenly leaned towards him. He did as she told him to and closed his eyes and raised his eyebrows in nervous anticipation. With one quick move he had to scratch over the scar on his face again. “Iii uh, g-guess I’m ready!” he said and held his breath.

Nervously, Maria giggled. Though she had been a bit embarrassed in the first place, Jyabura's behaviour definetly made it fun. The excitement made her fidgety enough to give her a hard time keeping still.
"Okay," she said and lowered her voice, suppressing the quiet laughter. "Watch out, here I come...!"
Carefully, she leaned even more forward, closed her eyes shut but squinted shortly before she gave Jyabura a quick kiss on his lips.
"Haha, I kissed you!" Maria claimed as if she was being paid to comment what just had happened.

The boy trembled of this sudden touch, but before he could realize it, the whole thing was already over. His eyes were still shut, but cautiously he opened one of them and looked around, then the other one followed. “Wha-? What...? I-i-is it o-over already?” he asked and an impressive blush covered his face before he put one hand over his mouth to touch his lips. Well, that certainly wasn’t bad. But... that was all?

Jyabura could hear his heart beat up to his throat and he almost feared it would jump out of his chest every moment. “I, uuuh... we, I mean, you... we... t-thank you?!” he stuttered idiotically and looked around everywhere expect in Maria’s direction, as if that would hide his gigantic blush over his complete face.

"Don't mind it. Just scratched your back in return," Maria explained sophisticatedly. Then she examined him, both arms akimbo.
"Just for your information: Your face is as red as the fire brigade," she said, not minding her own cruelty. Stating the obvious was kind of a hereditary disease in her family. But at least, she managed to change topic pretty fast.
"What are we going to do now? We can't sit around here after I kissed you. My brother will fuck you up or something. That's what he once said at least." Slightly irritated, she scratched her head. "What does that exactly mean, anyway?"

Scratched his back? Didn’t she kiss him? No, metaphors weren’t his strong point.

After she pointed out the obvious, Jyabura’s blush became even some redder, if that was possible at all. However he was luckily busy to think about that fire brigade stuff she was talking about. Well, not that they didn’t have fire on the Grandline, mind you. But if you grow up on a tiny island in the middle of the sea and live in a building entirely made out of stone, fire was rather seldom. In fact gigantic tsunamis were more of a thing he was used to.

With the last tiny bit of dignity that was left, he cleared his throat and got up on his feet and fumbled around on his sash uselessly. “I don’t know what that means, but it doesn’t sound good. But if your brother wants his face to get broken, he should come over and take on me! I mean, if he dares, of course!” he told Maria bluntly, because being fearsome wasn’t his strong point either.

Of course, Maria stood up, too. Though Jyabura kind of frightened him, so she gave quite an anxious facial expression.
"No!" She vigorously claimed then. "You're not breaking his face! N-nobody is breaking each other's faces!"
Maybe she was taking him a bit too serious, but broken faces always were serious business. That was what she kept telling her brother, too.
"I-I mean, I appreciate your offer," she insisted, actually quoting what she sometimes overheard from her father, "but I don't want anybody to get hurt!! Nobody I like at least."
For a moment, she stood there awkwardly.
"And now let's get going!" She simply decided, grabbing Jyabura's arm to tug him along (or at least try). "Maybe we can find a playground somewhere close!"
