Summary; Envy thinks X wants to talk. X doesn't, really. Or at least, not this time.
Log;
It had been too much work, X thought. Hopefully it would be worth it. He'd considered Envy's offer, briefly. But in the end, he wanted to /know/ much more. What was inside the other creature, he wondered over and over during the past few days.
And now, the trap was set, the bait given. Among the shadows of the reinforced iron ceiling beams, an overhead crane held a heavy load of steel sheeting over part of the floor, near the door; the factory's spotlights were strategically broken or angled to cast it in shadow. The winch controls were set behind X's back, ready to drop the heavy weight at any time. Even though most of the old factory floor was empty, X had scattered boxes and junk nearby, as though he'd been collecting it. Now there was really only a single pathway from the door to where X sat, perhaps twenty meters away.
Most important of all were the distractions, meant to draw suspicious eyes and keep them from looking upwards. The first was clearly obvious: four long serrated blades resting against a box within X's reach. The second was much less so: a cardboard cutout taped to the glass of one of the spotlights cast an odd shadow across the factory floor, as if there was something large concealed among the piles of junk.
There was no box prepared yet, but, X figured, if he managed to kill Envy, there were enough old windows in the factory for supplies. And he really did hope that he could kill Envy, and examine him thoroughly.
Now he just had to wait for his opponent to show up. So X waited in his favorite shape, a young boy in baggy, shapeless clothing, and dangled his skinny legs over the edge of the crate he was sitting on, swinging them back and forth.
--
Envy entered the factory, all his senses on alert. As far as he could tell there wasn’t anyone else there besides X, but he still didn’t trust him an inch. Not when he seemed so obsessed with the idea of opening Envy up and looking at his insides. If Envy didn’t know there wasn’t any possible way of X killing him, he’d have thought twice about accepting the other one’s offer to meet.
He saw X waiting for him, sitting on a crate. Seeing that whatever else this was, it wasn’t a set-up to catch him for the murder spree of a few nights ago, Envy shifted back into his usual form, long green hair and a strong body taking the place of the short brown hair and overweight figure he’d copied off some human he’d bumped into.
Envy crossed his arms and raised his chin slightly, seeming to stare at X but also taking in the rest of his surroundings. He dismissed the blades next to X immediately…whatever else the other shape shifter was, he wasn’t stupid; if he meant to use something against Envy, he wouldn’t leave it in plain view.
“Well,” Envy called out across the factory floor, “what did you want to talk to me about?” He didn’t mean to get any closer to X than he had to before he was sure that the reason of the meeting was really for them to team up.
--
"I liked your idea," X smiled, calling back across the floor. If he hadn't shown that same innocent smile before under dubious circumstances, it might seem reassuring. "About teaming up, I mean. There's vampires and werewolves and wizards, and that kind of thing here, I keep hearing. And arrancar and shinigami." He shifted a little as, unseen, a hand grew its way out of his back, long fingers pulling the winch controls under his shirt, and holding them there, waiting for the right moment now.
"I don't really know anything about any of those. But I'd like to," he chirped, and hopped off the crate, heading down the path towards Envy at a relaxed pace, hoping Envy will move up a little and meet him partway. And if he was next to Envy when the trap was sprung, he'd get a much better close-up view.
--
Envy raised an eyebrow and casually took a few steps forward, his arms still folded in front of his chest. X always seemed so damn happy go lucky, whatever the situation, that it was really hard to get a feeling of what his intentions were. “There are a lot of different species here, I know. Why do you think I mentioned watching what you were doing? Some of them even I don’t want to go up against without knowing exactly what I’m in for.”
Watching X walking towards him, he relaxed slightly. He didn’t seem to be holding himself in a position to attack him again, and as far as Envy could see there were no weapons hidden anywhere. Maybe he really was going to get himself a new ally out of all this. He really wouldn’t mind someone like X on his side with the way things were right now.
--
Hmm, well, that raised an interesting question. X stopped, several paces away from beneath the crane, looking thoughtful. He had, he decided, time for a question or two.
"Really? Which ones are that tough, do you think?"
--
Envy shrugged. “The arrancar sound like they’re some of the strongest here. Then there are the vampires, the demons, the angels, I haven’t really had a run in with any of them yet so I couldn’t tell you. And I wouldn’t go against any of the other homunculi either, if I was you. None of them are easy to beat and they’ll be more than happy to kill you.”
--
"Oh, well." X said thoughtfully, "I've met a demon before. At least, I think that would be the right word for him. I was planning to kill him again when I ended up here, but... at least it isn't too inconvenient, since there's so many other monsterous creatures here. But I guess this does mean some more planning."
X pointed off to the side where the shadow of the 'invisible object' was cast across the factory floor. "I don't know if you can quite see it from where you're standing, but I'm working on a little something right now, actually. It's not done yet, but..." He shrugged, and pretended to look at something just off to the side. "It looks pretty good from here."
Just a few more steps...
--
“I can’t wait to see what you manage to think of if you really mean to take all of them on.” Envy snickered. “You’re going to have the whole City after you at this rate…more than it already is"
Envy wasn’t quite sure what X was looking at…from here he couldn’t see anything out of the ordinary. Well, a couple of steps closer to him wouldn’t hurt, he knew that he was at least as fast as X, should he try anything. Moving closer, he asked him, “What is it?”
--
X turned to him then, and beamed a happy, childlike smile. "You know, I'm really so glad I could show you this, Envy!" he said, and pressed the button held behind his back. With the lights turned away, there was no shadow to warn of the incoming weight, only the sudden clunk of the chain releasing and then the shockingly loud clang of the metal crashing to the floor, completely overwhelming any crunching noises from the body underneath.
He grabbed the controls from the hand behind his back and crouched down next to the heavy weight of steel, pressing a different control to pull the load back up to the ceiling beams. The chain rattled and groaned, slowly starting to pull, and X peered underneath, his eyes wide and bright with eager curiosity, the desire to know, the desire to /see inside/ the other shapeshifter. Surely he couldn't still be alive after that.
And maybe after all these years, he'd have a hint of what he as looking for.
--
It was too fast, too sudden, he’d hardly heard the noise before there was nothing, his senses stopped registering anything, pain without a reason to it
In spite of being smashed to a pulp, Envy’s body still kicked into gear and started the process of reassembling itself.
--
X watched, fascinated, as Envy's body reshaped itself, bit by bit. But before he hit the danger zone, as muscle began to reform over bones, he said with a smile, "Not yet!" and released the weight again. Then leaned in to watch Envy reform.
And again.
And again.
It really wasn't as good as taking someone apart himself, but it was close.
"Well," X considered, mostly to himself, "I guess I can't use you to fill up a box. Not like this, anyway. See you later then, Envy!" he beamed, and let the weight drop one last time. He sprang forward, jumping up on top of the massive pile of steel, dropped the control, and flitted out the factory doorway in a quick burst of speed. He just had to get away quickly, aboveground to be lost in the crowds, and he didn't think that Envy would be getting up from underneath that pile of metal in time to catch him.
