If the City's a revolving door and people come and go so quickly, you'd think it would be logical to avoid forming any attachments.

[Logical, but not human. He knows very well that emotional attachments with other humans is a basic need, even if it's one that he finds particularly burdensome and disquieting.]

How do most people cope?
