The City had an eerie way of combining the familiar with the unknown, just the right amount of each to prevent one from really relaxing and falling into lockstep living, despite the overwhelming temptation. Even as Otae made her way to the little bar at the end of the street, kimono wrapped slightly tighter than usual to ward off sneaky hands, there was an unsettling sensation about the night, despite how accustomed she'd grown over the years to the light scent of alcohol permeating the air. Despite how many nights she'd spent in the company of older men just wanting someone to talk with, to feel a warm smile being returned their way.
Looking back would have, perhaps, been the easiest way to shatter the illusion of familiarity. There was no dojo to return to once she'd had her fill. There was no pesky, four-eyed little brother to kick around in order to relieve her stress. Perhaps the only constant, given the different faces, was the alcohol itself, and maybe that was why Otae was planning to partake of it, for once.
If nothing else, the alcohol could blur the scene until it had some semblance of home.
Not that she was homesick. Not that she cared for the Edo which had fallen to the Amanto, nor the way of life so catered to their needs. But even that was comforting in its constant discomfort. Life's play on irony.
Making sure to give passerby her best glare, Otae stood directly outside of the bar's entrance, waiting for her companion to arrive.
