Log;

Youko wanted some time for herself, just a few hours to collect her thoughts and digest what was happening around her. She didn’t know how many could cope with being so far from home so easily. After dressing in a long light purple skirt and a pink blouse, she had left a note (“Come back soon. - Y”) in her room to finally walk out Harry’s apartment. They were good people inside, taking her in and comforting without asking anything in exchange. They weren’t trying to lock her up or send her to a court to be sentenced like a criminal.

The people of the network seemed nice, too, even the little guy with funny hair who claimed to be Death’s kid.

Then why was she was so restless about? She could take her time here, get a job and wait until she would be returned to Japan. Everybody returned eventually, she was told, but never willingly, it seemed.

All I have to do is wait...

She grasped her sword firmly and brushed her fingers on the blue jewel that hung around her neck. If she felt so safe, why did she still carry this? They were all nice to her, even Nicodemus who was possessed by a demon, heck, even the demon that was possessing Harry. Why did she feel the need to keep those items around?

Just in case…

She told herself, then pushed her nagging fear away, forcing to halt her trail of thought before it would be too late. She wouldn’t even consider that! She couldn’t! She felt her eyes welling up with unshed tears once more!

“Just in case you return to that cold, cruel world…”

“W-Who?!”

Youko surveyed her surroundings, scanning the tall buildings that framed and circled her like phantoms; she saw the square a handful of meters forward. The people that walked by her were faceless, restlessly minding their paths without paying her any heed.

“W-Who said that? Show yourself!”

A strange, high-pitched voice, laughing like an old man, laughing at the dread she was so miserably to conceal grated her ears. Youko gasped. Something started to glow just a few steps away from her. It was a hideous monkey that looked at her with knowing eyes; his fur shining phosphorescent blue.

Youko swallowed hard and stepped backwards. “Who—What are you?!”

“Who I am… I am who I am. I am what I am. And you,” he pointed out, laughing again. The screeching noise was increasingly unpleasant. “You’re a silly girl fooling yourself to believe you’re coming back home.”

“I am coming back home! They said…”

“They said? Like Keiki said?” He grinned at her shock.

Keiki-san…” Youko whispered, feeling her heart racing. “Do you know him? Did he send you?!”

The monkey’s laughter became louder. “Sent me? Nobody sent me, little girl, I’m here to tell you nice things, because I’m your only real friend.”

“But…”

“Keiki isn’t here. Is he?”

No… Youko recalled spotting Keiki’s blonde hair and fair complexion just before the wolf youma attacked. Why he hadn’t helped her?

“Because he’s not on your side… It’s all a set up. They want to keep you away from home like Keiki did.”

She lifted her gaze, forcing to bore into his wicked eyes. “Th-They?”

“Harry. Abel. Nicodemus. Greed. All of them are lying to you.”

“They have been nice!” she exclaimed, defensively. She believed in them, didn’t she?

“They have been nice!” the monkey mocked her voice, perfectly, he even sounded like her. “Men possessed by demons? Can that be trusted? Someone called Greed? And the priest is suspiciously cheerful. You reminded him to someone he knew? Several someone? Doesn’t that sound sane?”

“But… I haven’t given any reason to mistreat me. I have been…”

“A good girl?” The laughter was harsher sounding now than ever. Youko fell to her knees, hugging herself in despair. “Face it. You only behave like that - scared, polite, docile because is easier to rise sympathy from them. That gets you free food, clothes, shelter and even a job without real effort. You lie consciously and unconsciously because you don’t know another way to survive. Who would really like a person like you? What they feel for you is just pity. ”

Her eyes widened, speechless for minutes; she found her voice again, denying every word he told. “N-No. I…am truly…grateful.”

“You’ll like to do things that get you praise. That’s why you can’t speak with Nicodemus in public or get involved and take sides until there’s an obvious loser…”

“S-Shut up! I don’t do that!”

“Have you forgotten? Silly girl, little girl?”

“Huh?” Youko looked up; tears brimmed out her reddening eyes.

“Even if you come back to Japan, you won’ have a home to return to.”

“That’s not true! I’ll return home!” The monkey laughed at her mantra and Youko couldn’t tolerate his ridicule any longer. Rising, she charged against him, trying to thrust her blade into his ugly visage, but he vanished before she could touch him.

“You’ll have no one to welcome back home. Nobody wants you back! Nobody wants you here! Everybody wishes you death in the other world!”

Youko darted out, attempting to escape to the demon’s words but it was too late, they rested heavy in her heart, gnawing her doubts, some of them voiced aloud by the ugly ape. She couldn’t believe herself. Her hands were shaking and her legs were about to give up. What was she going to do? What if what he said was true? She stopped her flight, realizing she had reached the square already. The darkness in the atmosphere had been lifted. Instead, she saw much clearance and the mesmerizing sound of water dripping.

The fountain… She hadn’t heard nice things about that destination. In fact, most she had been told about had been frightening awful: that the fountain had the ability to show people’s homes but its images were untrustworthy; you weren’t supposed to rely on them. But… she couldn’t resist the call of the clear waterfall and the comforting smell of the imaginary sea in the air she breathed, so Youko continued her path until she saw her image – the monstrous tall, dark skinned emerald eyed red head woman she had become – reflected on its surface.

As she looked into the waters, her own blade was starting to glimmer. She hadn’t noticed, but it broadcasted the same scene she was about to witness in the luminous liquid depths.

Two women - one younger and one older conversing about something she barely could listen was about; the words “nightlife” and “dyeing” came as clear as the dripping water. Youko narrowed her eyes, trying to distinguish their faces and, after a while, she could do it. “S-Sugimoto-san!”

It was Sugimoto, the girl she had helped to shun for six months, gossiping with that heartless bitch of her English teacher. Youko’s grip in her sword tightened. If she wouldn’t have sent her to the vice-principal’s office that day, she wouldn’t have met Keiki and nothing would have happened. What was Sugimoto doing with her, suddenly all chummy with that wicked harpy?

“So I knew it, she ran away. Didn’t she? All the honor students are the same. I knew she was like this classmate of mine.”

She? Were they speaking about her?

“Yes, teacher. I thought her parents should know. A friend of mine spotted her with a gang of fellow ganguro last night.”

No! “No…” That wasn’t truth. She didn’t escape to join a gang! She was taken into another world by a tempest! “You’re lying!” she yelled, feeling the urge of crying overwhelming her anew. “

“Oh, don’t worry. I’ll report this to the vice-principal. He’s going to speak with her parents. I always knew Nakajima was a problem waiting to be exposed.”

“Stop it!” Youko cried out. Her parents… They were going to tell this lie to her family? To the authorities? To her classmates? Maybe to the police? The implications of having a stain in her school and criminal record were immediately into her head. She wouldn’t have a future… Her parents wouldn’t believe in that story?!

“Wouldn’t they?” the monkey spoke again. Frantic, she looked for the source of the voice and realized he was nowhere at sight. “I told you, silly girl, you have no place to return to.”

Sobbing, Youko fled the fountain while the incessant screeching laughter of her invisible stalker echoed in her ears.
