Log;

One success should always be followed by another, Jadis thought. And three could be called an adequate test. Especially since two of those three had already returned to their former state. Which could only that either her power was too damped by whatever kept her in the City, or it simply required exercising.

She was always happy to exercise it.

Now she was walking in the city proper, wand in one hand as one might carry a staff, or a scepter. Except that anyone bearing a scepter ought by rights not be required to walk. Perhaps that could be remedied soon, though. For now, her focus needed to be on finding her next target.

Jadis wasn't exactly an under-the-radar sort of lady, as Zach would put it, but preoccupied as he was, walking out of the Hall of the Missing, he didn't notice her right away, walking around with her wand and usually creepy demeanor. It wasn't that it necessarily was creepy, he would clarify if ever asked, but more so that he had read the books and the background literature was certainly enough for him to deem her as 'creepy' even without the added incentive of eternal winters in certain parts of the City and whatnot.

Having been in the Hall to peruse the many names, trying to memorize them out of sheer boredom and fascination combined, he rubbed his eyes absently. Lately things seemed to have both slowed down and sped up. Sylar was back, which begged the question what Zach was doing so far away from his best friend. He should be there, in case she...what...needed him?

He sighed. He was fine, being normal, really.

This place just made him think he might not be, sometimes.

So pondering, he continued down and out of the front of the Hall, stuffing his hands deep into his pockets.

The thing that the investigators were getting consistently wrong to this point was the idea that Jadis was targeting people out of any kind of personal agenda. True, the stabbing victims had been selected, but only because of their backgrounds, not because Jadis cared about them in any way.

This endeavor was entirely random, however. Victims chosen by convenience alone. And a young man walking by himself, paying no attention to his surroundings, was exactly what Jadis looked for in a target.

She approached from behind, of course. If this one continued true to form, then the spell would fade, and she couldn't yet risk her victims knowing her face.

Still mentally wandering, Zach did what he often did when he wasn't paying any particular attention to what he was doing or where he was going: he picked his phone out of his pocket and checked it for any texts or missed calls. For some reason he had a hard time getting any kind of reception in the Hall of the Missing, which made him think of it a little as he thought of a graveyard, but that might have just been his own weirdness.

No amount of text messages or lack thereof however could keep him from the sudden feeling that he was being watched. Generally in high school this was often a look of ridicule or similar dislike, none of which he gave the time of day, but in this City he was aware enough that any kind of look warranted some attention and he glanced around, turning speculatively, not really expecting to see anyone he knew. There were just too many people to know everyone, or anyone sometimes.

When the boy began to turn in her direction, Jadis reached out with her wand, smiling to herself. She rested it against his shoulder, the cold crystal of the tip touching his cheek. The petrification would begin there, and spread too quickly for him to escape. Perhaps he'd remember that touch, perhaps not.

Perhaps he'd remember how the air became so cold his last breath was vapor as he exhaled.

Zach, for his part, had enough time to drop his phone but he didn't even hear it hit the ground. He felt foolish in the seconds he had however, enough time to think to himself: I knew this was going on, and I wonder if Claire is immune? I hope so. How stupid, he thought in addition. Really. He was just a normal guy with normal reflexes and no abnormal or above-normal abilities to combat what he knew was happening. Hopefully he would return to normal. Everyone else had right? Well, Eden hadn't as he recalled...or had she? He really shouldn't be unaware of that, he chided himself. Amazing how many things could pass through one's head so quickly...his last definite thought was the hope that Claire would remember what he told her not too long ago. The file was on his computer, of course. She knew the password, right?

Well, he was pretty sure he had told her, at least.

[ooc: Arrangements have been made for Zach's statue to be discovered -- post can be used for that if desired.]
