Rating; PG-13? For girl-talk and possible threatening of Dawn and anyone she's ever been interested in.
Characters; Buffy Summers ([livejournal.com profile] 1inageneration and Dawn Summers ([livejournal.com profile] tothelibrary), with an appearance or two by Toshiko Sato ([livejournal.com profile] warped_inside)
Summary; Big Sister's home, and Little Sister's got some 'splaining to do. With cocoa and familial love!
Log;

Dawn-- true to her word-- is waiting by the door for Buffy. She's pretending to read a book, but really? Eyes glued to the door, waiting for the knock that will mean Buffy is not only here, she's here with Dawn.

Excitement doesn't cover it. Even if she's going to get yelled at-- and she so will, because it's Buffy and Dawn has done some really dumb things since getting here-- Dawn can't keep the grin off her face. Any and all yelling will be worth it, because she gets her big sister again.

So it took her a while before she found the place. The City was a lot larger than she'd thought, more than what she'd seen on top of the carousel. But Buffy had gotten around by asking a few people for directions and generally managing not to freak out when she turned on yet another dead end.

Walking up the flights of stairs, Buffy stood on Dawn's doorstep and knocked once, immediately inserting her hands back into her jacket as she waited for an answer. "Dawnie? It's me. Buffy."

She'd been doing some network-surfing and Dawn's time here wasn't all happy, from what she could glean from the information openly available to her. But it didn't matter. Whatever stupid thing her sister did, she would always be there to yell at her, talk her up or generally lock her into her room until she stopped being stupid and promised to act like a normal person. Or, if worse came to worse, kick the butt of anyone who hurt her.

Hey, what else were sisters for?

"Dawn? Are you- !"

She's cut off as a blur of long brown hair is flung into her arms, making even Buffy stumble back a little bit. At first she's a little bit awkward- she's not used to this type of affection from the Dawn back home. That Dawn is more likely to find solace in the arms of their mother instead. But she loosens up, puts her arms around Dawn, spins her around a little bit.

Then she holds her at arm's length, examining this new, older Dawn. And realizes she's taller than her. "When did you grow...why are you taller than me? How am I supposed to call you squirt now?" Buffy rolls her eyes, giving her 'why god why' look to the ceiling.

And inside she feels a little bit of a pang. Her sister's all grown up. She doesn't really need her anymore. She's got friends and people to take care of her. And although Buffy will tell herself that it's fine, that it's almost a relief not to have to worry about her safety, inside she knows otherwise.

Any tighter and Buffy swears her ribs are going to break. "Ouch. Okay, get off, Dawn." and god, it almost takes a crowbar to pry the younger girl off of her. Sure there was some guilt about breaking her sister's sentimental moment, but breathing and the need to breathe kind of overrided that.

She stepped inside the apartment, taking a look around. It was a cosy place, kind of reminding her of her dorm room at UC Sunnydale for some reason, probably because of it's size. Definitely a Dawn place to live.

"I'm not a midget! I'm a healthy height for someone my age. Besides, being tall is probably overrated. Especially if your head hits chandeliers or other random objects hanging from the ceiling."

And Buffy, never being one to beat around the bush, got straight to the topic. "So." Okay, she was warming up to it. "You. This boyfriend of yours. And this sex that you had. And the guy that you shot. I want to know everything. And no skipping the gory details either."

Tosh was hovering in the kitchen doorway during this exchange, had been since she heard the knock at the door. She was holding Shin in her arms, because it wasn't fair to expect Buffy to deal with being pounced by two bouncing, excitable lifeforms. Not on her first visit, anyway.

"Tell her about Godzilla too, while you're at it," she teased quietly, smiling at them both. "We don't want your sister getting the impression that the City doesn't sometimes have a sense of humor."

"Any friend of Dawn's is a friend of mine. Except for her annoying middle school ones. But hopefully you don't giggle and or have a crazed obsession with the Backstreet Boys or whatever's popular with twelve year old girls nowadays." Buffy gave a grin. "I would shake your hand, but you know. Yours seem to be full with adorable furball."

Gosh, she hasn't seen Dawn this happy since...Buffy has no idea. Ever since Dawn found out about her existence as the key, her moods had been downhill. In a crash and burn fashion. But now she was older. She was bubbly and happy and excited and had great friends. The City had obviously done her some good for all the bad it had done.

"Of course I do. I always want monkey brains, Dawn." her smile was reminiscent, her thoughts obviously flashing back to that day when she'd scarred her sister off of marshmallows for life.

"Even when I was that age, I didn't giggle or obsess over bands," Tosh replied, with a laugh. She set the puppy on the floor and he immediately ran over to greet the newcomer. "Come and sit in the kitchen, that's mostly where everyone hangs out anyway. Around here the kitchen is for socializing and the couch is for being sick or moping."

She definitely saw a resemblance between the two sisters, in attitude and wit.

Glancing over her shoulder at Dawn, she added, "Dawn, you know I'm not allowed to keep things like that in the fridge anymore. And I thought you were having cocoa."

Around this place, that was a perfectly understandable misunderstanding.

And of course, Buffy's innocent face is fooling no one. "I have no idea what you're talking about, Dawn. No idea at all." drat. Note to self, work on the innocent face. The mischievous grin on her face didn't exactly help her cause either.

It's a little bit awkward, seeing as she doesn't know Tosh and Tosh doesn't know her and Buffy can't think of anything to say. "I'm guessing Dawn spends a lot of time on the couch, then." she teased, liking this house more and more by the minute.

"Well that's good actually, there's only ever been alien brains in there anyway." Tosh grins back and shakes her head a little at Dawn's obvious plotting. Have you met Toshiko, Dawn? She likes everyone.

"No, that's mostly Jack lately, he's been a bit of a prat over giving up smoking. Dawn seems to be the least mopey of the three of us, which...might either encourage you, or make you decide to drag Dawn off to find a more cheerful place to live." With the puppy on the floor now, running back and forth between Buffy and the kitchen, Tosh holds out her hand. "Toshiko Sato. I'm one of the ones sort of adopted Dawn when she arrived. She's been over the moon about you showing up here."
