log; ongoing
When; July 9, early afternoon
Rating; PG
Characters; Lelouch vi Britannia [
lel0uch ] & Shirley Fenette [
refrainingly ]
Summary; The Gerbera Daisy stood for enduring purity, for innocence. Though touched by death, he hopes Shirley can remain the way she is.
Log;
July 9th.
The date had come all too quickly and still, Lelouch felt himself to be terribly unprepared for the day. It was also too easy to forget the date, or claim to at least. The general mayhem that was all too common in the city could certainly be reason enough for forgetting the date but Lelouch knew that that would simply be callous of him. Cruel, even. He had not been the best of friends to Shirley, or to anyone for that matter, and after neglecting his association with her he knew that this was the least he could do.
Euphemia, on the day she had visited just days ago, had advised as much or rather, Lelouch had gathered that from her answer. It had been a hypothetical situation that he had put forward, one that inevitably used Suzaku and herself, but he had made it so it echoed his situation with Shirley enough.
In the end, her advise was the only one he had to draw from. His pride would not allow him to ask anyone of his problem.
And so, without much of a concrete plan, he sent Shirley a brief note about meeting at the fountain again, if she was available. He'd start from there. The first move was to take action; apologies and treats would have to follow afterward. If he sat down to plan the battle then it was likely he would never have the chance to fight it even.
He hadn't known what to give Shirley, so this time, he settled for flowers; gerbera daisies in oranges, pinks, and yellows. Sunflowers reminded him of Shirley, really, but those were far too big and eye-catching to be carried about in public. Gerberas seemed lively enough and cheerful without being too eye-catching or obnoxious.
Lelouch hoped that it was an appropriate gift given the situation, the occasion, and the history between them. It was an odd feeling to have. To hope. In war, there was no hope, just a desired outcome you achieve by reaching a series of conditions.
He waited.

Even though she was aware of what the day was and that it was her birthday -- it didn't register in her mind that could have been a reason that Lelouch wanted to see her because she was too caught up in the fact that he did want to.
After getting ready, she headed straight towards the fountain where he wanted to meet.

He had no reason to lie to himself now, to force himself to believe one thing over another. The truth was that there would always be guilt mixed in with whatever feelings he now held for Shirley. The fact would remain, forever and regardless of whether or not Shirley's life could be renewed, that it was he, Lelouch vi Britannia, who was the chief cause for Shirley Fenette's untimely death. It may have been Rolo who pulled the trigger, but it was her connection, and his own failures that led her down for the slaughter.
He spotted her before she did and, telling himself that his mission today was to do what little he could to make her happy today, waved at her casually. Smiling.
"Over here." He pocketed the book and then walked towards her.
"Happy birthday, Shirley."
