Log;

The cathedral was silent and eerie in its silence. Tod stood at the foot of the altar, glancing up at the figure of the suffering Christ that added substance to the crucifix. The image of life itself, wasn't it? Of the suffering of the mortals; the pains and restrictions of existing. They hailed it in this godly form. Worshipped it, even. No, he would not pretend he understood. There was nothing to understand. To think that impotence could be fought with powerlessness was nothing but mere idiocy; a ridiculous notion thought up by humans who wanted to grasp on to every thread of life, no matter how stripped of meaning it was.

Stubborn. So stubborn mortals could be.

Not this one, however. This innocent girl. A child, more likely. Like Elisabeth when she had first stood before him. Unlike Elisabeth, however, this other girl had been willing to listen. She had been easy to persuade, even easier to gain the trust of. Tod would make sure to reward her with the one thing she wanted. Escape. The one escape, the ultimate escape, the escape only he could grant her.

Megumi's warnings would get swallowed up like the first drops of water in the thirsty desert sand. Youko's words would lose their hurtful sting. Even the image of Elisabeth, frozen in time, rejecting him one last time, would not matter. The scenario might be a new one, the surroundings different, but he was still the master of the underworld. He was still death and could grant people his blessing with one snap of his fingers, curse their lives with a single gesture.

This she would learn, the young girl who had showcased her emotions so freely, and she would be grateful to him, of course, Tod knew.
