[ Mindy Macready is a City girl right down to the bone. Dirty streets, questionable crowds, and the New York city rush are  her kind of atmosphere, not this, overgrown garden of sand, and more sand, and even more sand. Yes, there are trees and foliage fanning across the perimeter of the island, but none of that is inspiring for this minature superhero.

Her hair's wet from the unexpected dip in the sea water. Mindy's clothes are equally as soggy. Neither are positive additions for her mood, and certainly not the grumbling traveling companion she has trailing behind her this fine afternoon. Fifteen minutes into the trip back to the main wreckage, and Mindy was already debating what she could utilize for a makeshift gag. ]

"Want me to help you walk? You're kind of slowing us down, Dr. House."

[ She shoots back a look of dry annoyance, resisting the urge to walk right up to him and force herself under his shoulder.

... If he had to be difficult. ]

Yeah, because we'll find the perfect one on the floor.

[ Mindy had lost her only gun amidst the bail out to sea. Knives, she could work with. And as discreetly as she can, she jogs up to a tree further up- snapping her knife out to slash off an low, long branch. She returns back to the irascible doctor, offering the branch to him.]

Don't lean on it too hard. It might break.

[ Somewhere deep down in Davy Jones' locker, forever lost to the crippled and pain-inflicted doctor. Was this supposed to be a lesson?

If Mindy could empathize with his pain, maybe she'd be a little less abrasive and a little more understanding. However, empathy's not her strongest suit, and even if she knew of his pain, she'd only tell him to suck it up.

Cameron had given her flack about that before. ]

It's not that far. Can you see ship in the distance? We'll walk this way for a while, then cut through those trees up there.

[ Everyone who knows him. Even if she's observed him-- watched television with him, Mindy can hardly say she knows him. Doesn't want to get to know him. But Mindy never lets herself get that close to anyone, anyway. ]

I bet there's lots of seaweed. That good enough for ya?

[ She looks back with a well placed smirk, slowing her pace down so that he can keep a near-even pace with her. The ship doesn't look like it will be leaving harbor any time soon. ]

[ Mindy would express a similar sentiment, about how people were liars and how you couldn't trust anyone. In her case, it's an entirely ungrounded perspective considering she's never had any relations outside her bubble. Her father told her never to trust people, and it's a code which she follows even now.

Maybe Damon Macready would get along with Dr. House. ]

Yeah? Too bad I hate vegetables. [ She grins at him, but it fades upon her next question. ] What happened to you?

What happened? [ Her eyes strain against the ship's mark against the horizon ] We have time.

[ Despite her heckling, House's pride is something that Mindy can admire. It's the fact that he would prefer to struggle along on his own terms, rather than relying on a shoulder to lean on. ]

I had an infarction. Do you know what that is? That's muscle death.

No. [ It's curiosity, Dr. House. Blue eyes, their pairing card, stare up at him. ] How did it happen?

It lead to muscle death. A wonderful story. They all lived happily ever after. Is that what you wanted to hear?

[ A juxtaposition in appearance. Mindy's more likely to wear her displeasure inwardly or vocally, either simmering silently or chewing someone out.]

That's all shit. You don't think I expect bad endings?

[ She turns away, jamming hands into her pockets. ]

Bad things happen. Shit sucks. People die. That's the world, isn't it?

What would you know about that, really? Someone push you down in the sandbox and so begins and ends the horrific aspects of humanity?

[ She knows that House is smart. Smart enough to associate masked features to her normal face? That's something she doesn't expect, but as perceptive as she is, Mindy's not as perceptive as she believes herself to be. In fact, she's ignorant in various ways.

Mindy's not going to use the bait as a trigger for long speech, just spare facts that would give ground to her claim. Not like something heard on television and mimicked. ]

The world's bad enough that cowards kill themselves. [ Sunlight flashes toward her line of sight, causing her to squint. ] Mom was a coward before I was born. Dad went to jail before that, framed for drugs, even if he was the best of them all.

You don't spend your time looking for happy endings. You're just lucky if you get one.

I get what I can. That's the only guarantee of having notable good times.



So you stepped up to the plate. That's how that happens? That's your happiness?

[ Hey, that was the slug. She's certainly not proud of her short stint as a criminal. And isn't there a chance that another pint-sized hero could be traipsing across the city? It is the City. ]

What the are you talking about? I stepped up to the plate? [ There's a short, empty laugh. ] You mean, I'm don't like sugarcoating things?

[ So another puzzle becomes his distraction? ]

If you got something to say, say it. [ Crunch, crunch, crunch; the sand seems endless. She could spend the rest of the time in silence, but curiosity prevails. ] Not like we don't have time.

[ And then comes that audible crack. Mindy doesn't even have to take a guess-- what just occurred is too obvious.

House needs to lose weight. ]

I'll get you another one. Or you can let me hold you up.

You aren't good at hiding things. You're angry and there's no visible reason unless it's a smoke screen because you're just that vulnerable.



Make sure it's bigger, thicker too.

Yeah, I'm angry. Forgot the part where we were just shipwrecked? [ Mindy huffs, trudging over to his right side where she forces his arm over her right shoulder, propping him up. ] Now I'm stuck with a douchebag.

You wanna try, House? Go. Get it yourself. [ Frustration fuels this cruel streak, as she suddenly slides out from under him, leaving him there to support himself. ] Be quick or I'm leaving you behind.

[ Mindy doesn't make a show of his struggle, marching along without sparing a glance toward the older man. Her indifference is partially a sham, otherwise she'd be speeding toward to the wreckage at a run.

Leaves rustle against a windless afternoon, twigs snap and dried leaves crunch. ]

[ A scene from a movie that would never include character archetypes like them. The cantankerous grump and the extraordinarily violent brat. They would be better suited for a parody.

But that's neither here no there, all prior concerns cast aside in favor of attention to the immediate. Leaves rustle, big deal. Leaves rustling on a still day? Even odder, which can only add to the equation of there's something not right.. Mindy's posture straightens up like a metal pole, moving her right hands to press firmly against her jean pocket. The leaves rustle again and Mindy feels the seconds come to a jolting halt.]

Stop moving.

What now?

[ A single beat displaces every ounce of pretense, as a sleek, black figure sweeps out from the bushes. It aims a single, taut strike at the doctor. Tumbling over to his side, Mindy shoves House out of the way, following this movement with a flash of her utility knife. The panther-like creature snarls and reveals a cavern of two rows of teeth; Mindy responds by hurling a knife into its next; a near-perfect shop, lodged in his neck a quarter of an inch from the jugular.

It's not down yet. ]

Stay down. [ Her forehead creases with a snarl. ] You're in our way, you piece of shit.
