Ruby looks both surprised and very grateful that he doesn't think any less of her, it's not a reaction she's used to seeing. She supposes that by 1959, maybe some of the paranoia has ebbed a little, and only those with dangerous ideals are actually being targeted. That and he seemed an excellent judge of character, anyway. His own revelation only increases her growing respect for him.
