If most of his smiles have been small and guarded throughout the night -- he's never been the type to grin, nor show any great happiness -- the smile he offers her now is bigger, and seems genuine. He appreciates the flattery, most because he has the feeling that it's sincere.

"I wouldn't go so far as to say dashing, perhaps, but I appreciate the sentiment."

That, however, is false modesty. He would absolutely say dashing, and probably other flattering words, besides.
