There is no logical reason for Chekov to gamble. He has more than enough money and he has spoken to Meyer enough to suspect that the house is cheating (but that's true everywhere, isn't it?). The activity and opportunity to people-watch is quite a draw, however, and he's having a fine time counting cards and the odds of the players at the nearest poker tables.
