There are many things Meyer's good at, but backing down has never been one of them. Even though their knock isn't responded to, even though it's just a little too quiet (strange, how that seems like such a cliched thing to say, and yet applies so well in situations like this) he goes ahead and pushes open the door anyway. At least Al knows how to handle a weapon and isn't liable to accidentally shoot him in the head if things suddenly get chaotic.
