To Knight is the Knight

When; February 21
Rating; G
Characters; Rosella ([personal profile] primrosella), Neil ([personal profile] had_not_lived), and Todd ([personal profile] mumbled_truth)
Summary; In which Rosella figures it's probably a more egregious offense to plan a royal wedding without the presence of Knights of Daventry than it is to be presumptious and mint a few of her own.
Log;
[Being engaged, as it turns out, is really a lot less of a life-changing event than Rosella's mother had always led her on to believe. Maybe that's because things that seem earthshattering at the age of seventeen are somewhat less so at the age of one-month-shy of twenty-three. Maybe that's because things are just different when you're a princess and heir apparent in a fairy-tale kingdom as opposed to a princess without a kingdom in a faraway land between the worlds. Maybe it's even because the courtship (she presumes it's safe to call it that, now) had already lasted for years upon years, and so whatever change had really occurred between one day and the next--a few fuzzy sentiments, a new ring on her finger--had been largely negligible in the grand scheme of things.

Planning a wedding, on the other hand, is precisely as much of an ordeal as her mother had always led her to believe (and then some), and that's how she's spent the past three days--running about, planning things, arranging this and that and the other, not really seeking anything too extravagant, but rather just something pretty and memorable, and befitting the bride and groom both.

It's been harder than it sounds.

But if there's one thing she's certain of that simply can't be compromised upon, it's the fact that any wedding she's a part of (as the bride, at least) is by definition going to be a state wedding in some capacity, and this isn't just about letting her mother down if she goes without some recognition of that; it's a slight to the kingdom she loves, and so something's simply got to be done about it.

Fortunately, she has a few potential candidates already in mind, and that's why she's asked Neil and Todd to come out and meet her by the side of the lake in Xanadu this quiet Friday afternoon.

Valor's here too, for once, and for a highly practical reason--she'd taken him around on a set of errands this morning, and the spoils are waiting in his saddlebags while he lazily grazes along the shoreline. Riding him down here in her formal court gown (the one she'd been wearing when she'd fallen into the Fountain, all those years ago), her crown, and her glass slippers certainly wasn't the easiest of ordeals, but it's not as though she might've changed in the forest or anything ridiculous like that, and all things considered she's looking rather put-together as she waits for her guests to arrive.]

[Anxious as he has been about the state of the City, Neil is trying to look at this from the proper Dead Poets perspective: to seize the day, not in spite of the looming uncertainty but because of it. Old Time is still a-flying. So, certainly, when Rosella asks to meet them this afternoon, he agrees immediately and heads out happily, eager to spend whatever time they have with friends. (Whatever time he has. He should get used to thinking of things that way.)

He's expecting something much simpler-- a picnic, maybe, or just a chat; but certainly, he's not expecting the formal regalia. It's not that he forgets she's a princess-- for all that she's adapted to this contemporary world, something about Rosella always screams fairy-tale princess-- but he's not used to it being so... literal? That's not quite the right word.

But it's still Rosella; she's one of his best friends. It would take more than the jewelry to intimidate him. With a grin, Neil waves as he walks up.]

[ Todd is not without his own anxiety, both similar and distinct. If given a choice in the matter, he'd much rather stay here for eternity with Neil than go back to the world he came from. It may be true that he has a life waiting for him to live it there, but it's not home. Not anymore. Home is the City, with Neil and all of the friends they've made here - most certainly, Rosella among them. He wants the life he has here, and would gladly give up his own to keep it.

So he is alongside Neil as they approach - and is perhaps, of the two, more visibly surprised by the formal state of Rosella's dress. It's true that it's impossible to forget that Rosella is a princess, but there's quite a difference between being aware of that and being confronted with the realization that one of your closest friends could literally have sprung from an illuminated text.

To be fair, it's an awesome sort of surprise, and he quickly offers a bright smile - smaller than Neil's grin, certainly, but in no way less genuine in his own soft, understated way. ]

Of course we came!

[They'd have made the time, no question, even if they didn't have it to spare.

Neil's got manners enough to feel underdressed, but after so long in the City-- and come on, it's Rosella; she's one of his best friends-- he's socially feral enough not to be embarrassed by it. So when she hugs him he hugs her back, taking some care not to bang the voluminous skirts about more than necessary, but all in all writing off the fancy trappings as just that-- fancy trappings.]
