After Rue backs out due to getting her wings caught in a door, Fakir heads up alone to rescue the stranded duck.

Log;
The midday sun gleamed over the City, its bright beams touched over the statues and domed top of the Opera Abandoned. Ahiru's true form of a small duckling sat wedged on a small stone alcove, using it as a perch.

Fakir sighed, exiting the front entrance of the Opera House as carefully as possible. The size of the wings turned out to be quite a nusiance - they got caught up in almost anything in their path.

So it wasn't really much of a surprise that Rue had managed to get hers caught in a door and had told him to go on ahead without her. The ex-knight huffed in a slightly-irritated manner, having already wasted several minutes waiting for the raven-haired princess.

However, Ahiru had been waiting far too long. Spreading the giant black wings out to full length on either side of him, Fakir lifted off into the air, grasping the red pendant in his hand as he rose effortlessly to the lofty top of the Opera building. Landing gently up on top and tucking his wings back in, he searched over the expanse of the roof for the stranded duck.

"Ahiru?" he questioned, spotting a familiar yellow figure on top a nearby stone. He went to her side quickly, concern lining his green eyes as he ducked down before her. "Are you alright?"

Ahiru blinked her large blue eyes several times. "Fakir! What? How?" Her shouts hit the air as loud quacking. She carefully padded her flat feet closer, looking up at her dear friend.

She tilted to one side as far as she could and then to the other, eyes fixed on his wings. Her body shifted too far and she fell onto her side with a high-pitched squeak.

"Whoa, take it easy!" Fakir exclaimed at her loud quacking, and winced when she flopped onto her side. "You have to be careful up here, moron, or you'll fall right off."

Reaching his hands out, he lifted the yellow bird off of the cold stone and cradled her up against his chest securely with both arms. "Stay still, alright? I won't drop you." Flexing his wings apart a second time, he gave an experimental flap before lifting off the rooftop and flying them safely to the ground below.

Ahiru glared at his name calling but had no time to talk his ear off. She blushed at being held close to him and stayed perfectly still. It had been a long time since he held her, duck or girl. Her little heart fluttered beneath feathers.

Upon landing out front of the Opera House, Fakir set Ahiru down to the ground and extracted the pendant from his hand, kneeling down beside her and placing the necklace over her head to rest comfortably around her neck. "There. You're safe now," he stated, offering her one of his rare smiles. "And you've got your pendant back."

As if his rescue wasn't enough, Ahiru gaped in surprise. The necklace! He found it! She leapt with joy and hugged him tightly, willing herself to remain a duck to prevent embarassment on both of their parts.

Surprised by the gesture, a bit of color crept into Fakir's cheeks as he hugged her back. Shrugging off his awkwardness with a cough, he lifted her into his arms once again, carrying her toward the inviting warmth of the Opera House.

Ahiru smiled and snuggled into the crook of his arm. "Quack quack!" was her heartfelt thank you to him. Safe was always with Fakir, she decided.

-----------

She had lied. The door did shut on her right wing but barely plucked out some feathers. It was for a good cause, Rue thought reproachfully. It was for Fakir's sake, as much as it surprised her. She knew his weakness, the desire to protect and finding himself unable to do so. The princess had exploited that low self-esteem in the past.

If he was able to "rescue" Ahiru by himself, he would feel better. Rue would make peace with the awful behavior she used to have.

Thus, Rue waited on the foyer of the Opera. Her black wings folded together on her back and arms crossed, following the former knight's flight through the window. When they landed and headed inside, she was standing there to greet them with a smile and a teasing clap at Fakir.

"You're a hero for small birds," Rue mentioned briefly, looking at Ahiru next. "Are you alright? Where were you? Hmph. We have been worried about you for weeks."

Ahiru cringed, ducking her head into her neck. "Q-quack..." she offered weakly. What could she say? She hadn't meant to anger anyone... most of all Fakir and Rue who were among the most important people in her life. She looked down to her necklace, the ruby stone reflected her beaked face slightly distorted. Rue was the one who got it for her. Did she have to be so much trouble?

Fakir offered the raven-haired girl a suffering stare for her remark, but his face betrayed him as he averted his eyes and the skin took on a slight red hue once more. "Hero" was pushing it, as far as he was concerned.

"We have been very worried," the ex-knight echoed Rue's words, looking down to the duck nestled in his arms. "But you're safe now, and that's what really matters." Looking up to the ruby-eyed princess, he raised an eyebrow. "You want to take her to get some clothes or something so she can change back? She can't communicate that well with us in this form."

Rue approached the pair and stroked the duck's hair, expression softened. "You're too important for both of us," she remarked gently. "You're my first friend." She smiled at Ahiru and had her gaze lingered on the stone of the same color of her eyes. "Hmmm. It looks fine, Fakir. Now hurry and become human," she added with haste. "I brought you this." On her left arm, Rue had tucked an extra grey uniform.

She wondered if Ahiru would gain wings like Fakir and herself? Then the three could fly on the blue horizon and forget about the unpleasant disappearance.

Ahiru dragged the clothes with her to a small dressing room. With the help of a water basin, she emerged not soon after, herself again with a pair of white small wings. "Fakir. Ruechan...I-I..." her eyes were brimming with tears. "I'm so sorry! I-I didn't mean to worry you o-or make you sad!" She reached for Rue's hand and then Fakir's.

"Thank you, thank you so much," she sniffled. "I'd be so lost without you!" Ahiru squeezed their hands as tightly as she could.
