The forest to the east. As Kira made his way through the City towards the outskirts, he became increasingly aware of how vague those directions were. As he entered the woods it was easy going at first, but the underbrush became gradually thicker until he was moving at a snail's pace. If speed had been his only concern, all could have been easily solved by simply staying off the ground. As it was, moving quickly while looking for someone in such a large area would only make the task more difficult. Resigned, he continued trudging along, staying alert for any signs of life -- the one he was looking for or otherwise.

"Midna-san?" He called hesitantly, looking back every few steps to ensure he was still in sight of the City's buildings. It seemed strange for the forest to be so thick when such a large population lived nearby, but considering the City itself specialized in all that was bizarre, it didn't come as much of a surprise.

She couldn't suppress the toothy grin that surfaced as he called her name. He impressed her; despite her abominable directions, he had managed to already come quite close to the branch on which she sat, albeit he was a bit too short to quite reach her.

"Just Midna, actually." She couldn't understand why the fellow had added an extra syllable to her name. Perhaps it was a custom, or maybe he'd just misunderstood her. Oh well.

Her giggle was almost bone-chilling, as her mutated form twisted her voice. "If you look up once in a while, you can see lots of new and interesting things, many of which are quite beautiful." She hopped down from her perch, and bounced up to float before him. "Unfortunately, at the moment I am not." She stared boldly into his eyes and grinned. "You are Izuru, yes?"

Kira, in his own way, was also impressed. He had never before felt intimidated by a creature he had to look down at in order to see its face (the exception, of course, being Kusajishi-fukutaichou, but that was a different story). "M-Midna, then." He corrected himself quickly as he tried to follow what she was saying. "Izu-- Yes, that's my name..."

The use of his given name caught him off guard, as did the bright orange of her eye, and he couldn't shake the feeling that he was being sized up by something half his size. "You're looking for someone?" He asked, tearing his eyes from her to look at the ground instead.

Her mocking face faded into a calmer, more serious countenance at his questioning reply. "Yes. His name is Link." She looked at the ground, ashamed that she had come to depend on the boy so much. She had been only using him, but she'd grown a little attached to him after realizing how selfless he was.

Midna shook off her guilt. "In his world he was known as the Hero of Time." She looked up at Izuru again, still serious. "He may not be here, but if he is he and I must be reunited. I need him to save my people, and he needs me for the same reason. If he's not..." She trailed off, unwilling to think what would become of her people if she never returned, and what would become of Link. "Well, in that case, I will still need your help. I have to find a way back."

She feared she may be asking too much of him, but she recalled how Link seemed when she first met him. Izuru reminded her very much of Link, in some ways, although Link smiled a lot more. Yes, this one would do nicely.

It was strange to see her demeanor change so quickly, humbling to hear the words she spoke. The full meaning didn't really reach him, couldn't, because there was so much they were separated by, but he could still get a sense that she was someone of importance where she came from.

"Chances are.. if he's here he already would have made himself known to you. There are exceptions, but... Well, we can still look if you'd like. As for a way back... Everyone in this City wants a way back. It's not easy. I've heard you can buy a way, but from the sounds of it it's a price you wouldn't be willing to pay." He felt sad to tell her this, it was clear there was something she needed to do. There would always be other shinigami to fill in the gaps at Soul Society, but for Midna it looked like it wasn't that simple.

"Even so, people have returned to their worlds by chance... I was back where I came from up until only a few days ago. And there are other ways, too... I've heard, at least. As long as you're not dead, you can go back." He regretted his last words as soon as they left his mouth, hoping that was not the case with her.

She didn't like what he told her. She really doubted Link was here, anyways; whatever cruel god or goddess did this to her wouldn't have been so terrible as to take away the last vestiges of protection from Hyrule. But it was certainly disconcerting that there was no easy way out. Then again, nothing truly good ever comes easy.

She laughed a little when he mentioned the death comment. "Well then, I guess I'd better not die. You'll protect me, right?" She looked up at him with a sparkle of mischief in her eye. "If there's no easy way out, then I guess I'd better settle in. Can I be your shadow?"

His relief that he hadn't said something foolish quickly dissipated at her following question. Protect? .. Well, he did not have any duties in the City, and she was someone important in her world, so... "I.. Suppose I will."

Then another question, this one far more outlandish. "I beg your pardon?" He asked, looking perplexed. Considering her appearance, he wouldn't have been surprised if she possessed the ability to wield some sort of dark, arcane magic. Images of bizarre rituals flashed through his head and he unconsciously took a step back, nervous. "Er, that's..."

Midna laughed airily at his apparent discomfort with her vague request. "Oh, stop, you look like I just asked if I can turn you into Ordon goat cheese so I can use you for superb soup." She looked at him, amused. "I only meant to ask if I can hide in your shadow. See, it helps avoid those bothersome questions about why I'm so hideous. And it makes it so I can eavesdrop a little, since not everyone will be completely up front with an imp."

She giggled, thinking about what must have run through his mind. It's such fun to play with new toys, but she must remember to be gentle. Sometimes toys become real boys. "It's not like I'll actually take away your shadow, but... Look, see?" She made herself incorporeal, and before him was nothing but a shadow where it shouldn't be, and a floating translucent orange eye. "And I just merge with your shadow. It doesn't affect you at all."

As she offered her explanation he calmed down and listened, watching her demonstrate her magic. "Ah... I see..." He was surprisingly unfazed speaking to the disembodied eye, and almost felt proud of himself for remaining composed as long as he didn't think too hard.

"If it really is better for you, that's fine... But that means you'll be following me for awhile, doesn't it?" He knew it was unwise to be so quick to trust a stranger, but if three of his fellow vice captains were involved as they were with enemies of Soul Society, he couldn't quite see where he was out of line.

His question forced Midna to reflect upon the situation. He looked to be a regular human being. She looked to be a demon thing. He looked to be fairly strong, but she has a hand on the back of her head. Although she wasn't sure he had noticed that part yet.

"I realize this might be a bit... much. I guess Link never really had a choice about trusting me. But you do have a choice. You don't have to help me. I guess I could figure out on my own, maybe." She was tempted to put on her best pity-me face and guilt trip him, but that was a trick that was beneath her. Just because she had the form of a vile imp didn't mean she was one.

"Anyways, to answer your question, yes, I would be following you for a while. I am lost here, and from what you've told me, I won't find home again soon. At least for a week or so, can you help me find my way around? If you tire of me, I'll leave you alone. Besides, I don't have to be with you ALL the time." She looked at him level, trying her best to seem she was his peer. "I'm a woman of my word, even if I don't look it right now. On the fate of my people, I promise I'm what I say."

"No, I'll help you." He said with a small nod. "And please... I know that... what someone sees isn't always what is there, so you don't have to keep mentioning your appearance." It was more than he could usually say, but after all that had happened he felt the need to tell at least one person what he had learned, even if that one person was this stranger he was agreeing to help.

He thought back to the apartment, wondering how the other residents would feel about having a permanent guest. Many different questions began to arise: Did she eat? Sleep? How often would she hide in his shadow? Maybe it would be best to find another place to stay after all...
Ah well, he'd worry about that later. "Is it alright if we start heading back?"

"Thank you. I'll have to find a way to repay you." She was a little taken aback by his unexpectedly heartfelt words. He had seemed the standoffish type, but this sudden display of sensitivity showed that this was indeed a real boy. "I hadn't intended to bring up bad memories or anything. This change is just such a surprise to me, it's always in the back of my mind. I was a beautiful Twili woman, and the drastic change is a bit upsetting sometimes."

So much is still unsaid; Midna felt a fleeting instant of doubt. He, too, was a stranger. He isn't what he seems either, is he? But she brushed the thought to the back of her mind. Even if he isn't entirely what he seems, he traveled all this way to find her, struggled through the brush, and is going to help her very much. He is at least trustworthy. "Ah, it seems to be getting dark. Perhaps it is a good idea to head back." She prepared to meld with his shadow, but paused. "There's much left to talk about, but I suppose it will have to be another time. Thank you again."

With that, she melded with his shadow and disappeared, within hearing but not within sight.
