Isane peeked out the door to from the balcony into the living room, checking to make sure Kaku was asleep. The man had been sleeping... well... a lot. This was understandable, considering how much blood he’d lost. But she wanted to make especially sure he was sleeping now. Turning back to the balcony that overlooked the City she shut the door with one hand, the other hand carrying a small tray of tea, one of which she proffered to the woman already seated outside, the breeze crisp and cool, thankfully not too cold, thanks to the sun. "Here you are, Unohana-taichou."
Unohana took one of the teacups from the tray. "Thank you, Isane," She sipped the dark liquid in silent contemplation. The healer had gone out to the balcony to think, preoccupied mainly with the questions several of the shinigami had presented her. She had meant to be alone for awhile, but the presence of her vice-captain was not unwelcome. "How is he?" She asked after a few moments silence.
"... I still need to find another healer that can tend to his ear." Isane sat, legs folded beneath her, holding the cup delicately in both hands, eyes averted to the balcony floor. "If I don't his hearing will be severely compromised, and he doesn't want another member of his organization finding out he was injured, so..." The vice captain shrugged a little. "The rest I took care of. Glass debris, bite wound to the shoulder..."
"We've healed some of the worst wounds received in battle, but we just cannot regrow or reattach what we don't have. Shizune-san is the only other healer in the City that I know. She may be capable of regeneration. I'd still like her to rest another day or two before she attempts any healing, but after that... I don't think she'd mind trying." Unohana paused for a moment, raising the cup of tea to her lips and taking another drink. "You did well with the rest of his injuries, Isane."
"Thank you." Isane immediately answered, pausing to take a sip of her tea. "... I just..." She shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts of all those troublesome things. "I don't want her pushing herself. She's got her hands full with that one patient, right?"
"Yes. The young girl, Hotaru." Unohana allowed a small sigh to escape her lips. She had advised the pregnant medic not to strain herself. Her risk of miscarriage was far too high. But Shizune had taken on a patient that had already caused her to nearly miscarry once. Unohana worried that the next time it might not be so close. "I offered to help her, but she doesn't want to involve the shinigami with whomever the girl is associated with."
"Can't... we stop her?" Isane asked, but she supposed she knew the answer to that already. Shizune was just like them, after all. A healer first, everything else second. But... Isane also wished the woman would take it easy. But her faction seemed to be embroiled in something, and she supposed taking it easy may not be something she could afford. "... Well... we can't, really." Isane answered her own question, shifting awkwardly in her place.
Unohana set her empty teacup before her on the floor. "As much as I wish I did, I don't have the authority here to make her stop. I understand her wish not to involve us, but one more close call, Isane, and I don't know if they'll both make it. She's only in her the trimester and there's still a long road ahead of her. She can't push herself like this much longer."
"... Maybe we could talk to one of the other ninja?" An idea hit the shinigami. "Isn't Momo close with the one... the weapon's master? And there's the woman she lives with? Maybe if we spoke to them about it..." Isane paused, her gaze lowered. "Has she even told them, you think? That it's dangerous for her to be healing like this?"
"I don't know," the healer said, shaking her head. "But... you wanted to talk to me?"
“Y-yes…” Isane hunched her shoulders, suddenly finding the surface of her tea most interesting. It took her a few moments to continue. Though the woman had thought she’d worked it all out in her head, all that she’d prepared to say had suddenly fled her mind, leaving it blank. “… About…” She gestured vaguely back inside the apartment to where the injured CP9 Agent slept. “… Him.”
Unohana nodded slowly. "Have you worked out whether or not he's still lying to you?"
Isane’s gaze fell once more, trying not to look too flustered or embarrassed. “… No.” Her grip on the teacup tightened a little, knuckles whitening. “… I just… I can’t tell.” She shook her head, the few long strands of beaded hair that hung from the rest, close cropped, swinging about her face. “… And I don’t even know if it’s worth it, Unohana-taichou. If… it’s even worth trusting, worth trying…”
"It's always worth trying, Isane. It may not end how you wish, but at least you'll have tried." Unohana smiled, trying to reassure her vice-captain. "Why wouldn't it be worth it?"
“Because…” The vice captain’s fingers laced and unlaced, and she couldn’t quite decide whether she wanted to hold her cup in the air or place it by her side. “… Even though I keep saying I don’t want to live my life that way… not being able to give people second chances… what if it is safer that way, like some of those people said?” She hadn’t set out to say this much, but being around her captain… Isane could never keep a secret from her.
Unohana was silent for a moment. "It's... hard, sometimes, to allow someone a second chance. Especially when that person has hurt us before. And it is safer to not take those chances, yes. But you could end up regretting not doing so more than you might regret giving that second chance."
Isane stilled, her hand motions becoming less jumpy, calmer, listening to her captain’s advice. She looked up to the woman more than she did to anyone else, had served her for years, known her ever since she had been a recruit, fresh from the academy. And it was Unohana’s words that could calm her nervousness as no one else could. “Ah… I guess…” Isane finally decided to leave the tea be, folding her hands in her lap and looking up, over the lights and the sounds of the City towards the sky that was growing ever darker. “… He deserves a chance. I’m going to ask him… I haven’t asked him why he lies, yet. I think that’s a good question. So…” The tall woman shrugged a little, trying not to be too embarrassed about thinking such things, men?! “… I suppose he should tell me that.”
"You deserve to know that just as much as he deserves a second chance." She reached for the teapot between them and poured herself another cup. "I hope he's being honest with you, Isane. I really do."
“Yeah…” Isane smiled, settling and watching the sky grow ever darker over their heads, more aware than ever of the man sleeping in the apartment behind them. “… thanks, Unohana-taichou.” She murmured, letting the silence merely lapse over them as they sat, both contemplating matters of the heart.
