Summary; With things returning to normal, it's only a matter of time that departure becomes an inevitable thought. Subaru and Ranmaru take the first steps into wanting to leave..
Log;
Being a fox wasn't too bad, once he thought about it. Especially if it got him where he was, as playful as a fox as he'd become. Subaru-san had certainly turned into an embarrassingly cute dog and as much as he hated to admit it, he wondered if it was possible to keep him like this while becoming human himself.
Sadly, it wasn't to happen, and before he knew it, the transformation begun, surrounding Ranmaru as it took his limbs and began to strech them out to their normal size, the fox-hairs disappearing off his body and merging in with his clothes, clothing he wasn't without in the first place and his hands stretching out to now have his elbows against the floor, pinned to the sides of Subaru's head-- or at least would be. Blinking in surprise and shaking hs head, Ranmaru looked down at his partner, an amused look in his eyes.
"Looks like it's midnight." he stated calmly.
These were the types of curses that always made Subaru feel the most uncomfortable... Whenever he had to transform. There were always light pricks of tolerable pain, and then mild discomfort as he suddenly had to adjust to a whole new form.
Or rather, his old familiar one.
With a sigh, Subaru's eyes fluttered closed and he relaxed back against the couch cushions. He had been surprisingly tense as a little puppy.
"Mm... Seems like."
Ranmaru chuckled, shaking his head to get rid of the strangely woozy feeling he was having thanks to the transformation and loked down at his partner who was now, thankfully not a dog. Sitting up over him on the couch in a way that made so that he was straddling him, Ranmaru moved his hands to the sides of Subaru's body, resting them atop the cushions.
Then, with a small smile, he draped himself over him, resting his head under Subaru's chin and snuggling him and moved a hand to the other's hair, stroking him gently.
"Finally. Now this person wont feel like this is an illicit love affair between species." he joked.
Ranmaru's terrible joke made Subaru sigh a bit, but it was greatly softened thanks to the lovely attention he was receiving. He really did love the feelings of fingers running through his hair, even if he would never admit it out loud.
Feeling he ought to return the favor, he reached up to tug Ranmaru's hair free before tangling his fingers in the long locks. His covered thumb idly stroked the our rim of Ranmaru's ear while he murmured, "This might be awkward if Mitsuhide-san walks in."
He shivered a little, enjoying the feel of hands in his hair as well, but at the same time, enjoying the feeling of his own fingers in Subaru's hair. He still hadn't grown used to being shown such gestures of affection at all, though giving them was no problem.. he liked giving. But where it came to himself, the feeling was truly alien.
But not unwelcome. Which was why he nudged his head up against Subaru's hand and released a light purr of enjoyment, resting his cheek against the onmyoujin's chest and he chuckled softly.
"Mitsuhide-sama is fast asleep. Usually he doesn't wake up if there's no noise, and these walls are quiet after Kamui-kun's complaints. So.." he chuckled softly and moved his face to gently kiss Subaru's jawline. "We're safe."
Ranmaru reminding him of Kamui's complaint made his cheeks redden a bit in embarrassment, and his hand slid down to rest against the small of the younger warrior's back. "Mm. That's good."
Still, even after so long, he was feeling awkward. It didn't happen as often anymore...but it did happen. It usually didn't take much to trigger his nervousness, either.
Clearing his throat, Subaru attempted to sit up. "Considering the state we were in, we didn't exactly get the chance to do anything productive... Are you hungry?"
When Subaru moved to sit up, Ranmaru ended up sitting on his lap, but he made no movement to get off. Instead, the boy moved his arms around Subaru's neck with a wry smile and moved his hands to the opposite shoulders to hold him tight and tilted his head to look at him closely.
"I had a butterfly and a chocolate I think." he cringed when he thought of it. "This person should probably go and apologise at the shrine. Ranmaru's sensei used to say only beasts eat insects. " he paused, then looked at Subaru closely. "But Ranmaru was in a beast's body.. will the spirits forgive Ranmaru?" he asked curiously.
Apparently Ranmaru didn't want Subaru to move quite yet. With the soft blush still present on his cheeks, Subaru shook his head a bit and tucked Ranmaru's hair back behind his ears.
"I don't see why not. Being in the body of an animal like that, everything was not in your control. I'm just grateful that I stayed in, so I didn't run into any cats. ...Not that I would have been a particular threat to them."
The thought of the kind of animal Subaru had turned into chasing after cats was such a hilarious image that Ranmaru started to laugh, and laugh hard enough that he had to bury his face in Subaru's shoulder, then cover his mouth with a hand as he shook his head.
"S-Sumimasen--! It's just.. Oh Subaru-san, you made such a cute puppy." he chuckled a little and drew back, touching his fingers to Subaru's cheek and smiling at him. "Ranmaru is certain even the cats wouldn't be able to keep their paws off you!"
The very idea of hordes of felines smothering made Subaru blanch, and he shook his head once more before reaching up to place his hand over Ranmaru's.
"I'm certain Kamui had a good laugh about it, too. I don't know why I was turned into a puppy... If I were to pick an animal that the City should have turned me into, I would have thought of something relating to my shikigami... Like a dove of some sort."
"Oh Ranmaru thinks it was fine. After seeing Subaru-kun, it's even more apparent that that animal is right for you." he teased further, and turning his head, he raised the hand Subaru had moved over his own so that his wrist would be revealed partly and brushed his lips against the skin revealed beneath the sleeve.
"It just means Subaru-san is still as gentle as one, ne?"
The brush of petal-soft lips against such a tender spot made him shiver, and he found it rather difficult to form words. "Mm. Um... I suppose, but..." Subaru didn't think he was very gentle. He wouldn't exactly say that he was rough, either.
"You..." His blush deepened just as his gaze focused on anything but Ranmaru's face. "Do you often compare me to him? Who...I used to be, I mean."
Noticing the blush on Subaru's cheeks, Ranmaru couldn't help but smile and lowering Subaru's hand to his knee, he moved his own hand to circle around the onmyoujin's neck and nuzzled his cheek with his nose. "Sometimes. Some things he does are so very like you. The way you get flustered when complimented, the way you shyly smile.. except.. perhaps.. his eyes aren't so sad." Ranmaru sighed softly and smiled. "His are lonely." He had become friends with the younger Subaru, after all. "But it's clear that you both are completely different. He isn't the one Ranmaru loves."
He blushed himself when he admitted that, but Ranmaru was a lot bolder where it came to confessing things like that. "Ranmaru wishes.. the sadness could leave your eyes, though.. but Ranmaru wont ever ask for something you cannot give."
With a sigh, Subaru started to drop both of his hands away, only to pause, and reverse his action. Both arms wrapped around Ranmaru's waist to tug him even closer just as he buried his face in the young man's soft hair.
"It isn't that I try to be. Not consciously. I do wish to be happy. But I..." He didn't deserve it. That much he knew. "I'm not sure...if I remember how, anymore. How silly is that?"
Tucking his head under Subaru's face, Ranmaru let his lips brush against his throat and wrapped his arms around his back, closing his eyes and relishing in the feeling of being held the way he was. He liked being hugged, even more so when Subaru did it willingly.
At his words, though, Ranmaru couldn't help but chuckle softly. "You've had enough happen to you to make you think you don't deserve it. Maybe somewhere, you don't. But that would go for everyone, at some point, ne?" he smiled softly, brushing his lips gaainst his throat, before kissing he skin, and then cuddling him some more. "But having you here.. and being with you.. makes this person happier than he deserves to be." he whispered. Drawing back, he looked at Subaru's face, and whispered, "Ranmaru would rather be nowhere else.. know that, Subaru-san." he blushed lightly. "Is that strange..?"
When Ranmaru looked up, there was the slightest of smiles tugging at Subaru's lips. Nervous, but at the same time grateful and content, he lifted a hand from Ranmaru's waist so that he could lightly brush his thumb across Ranmaru's lower lip.
"Perhaps. But only because you have chosen me. I wish...I could take you from here."
And still, such a selfish thought did make him feel terrible. What about Kamui? And his sister? They were both dead, and destined to stay in the City for eternity...but did that mean he could merely give up on them? Such thoughts clouded his features.
The boy inhaled a soft breath, perhaps having his thoughts run in the same direction. If he left here, then he would be leaving Mitsuhide-sama behind as well. Mitsuhide-sama who was dead. How cruel would that be? Thinking for a while, Ranmaru looked down for a bit, parting his lips to allow Subaru's thumb brush over them completely and shivered slightly, then kissed the tip of the covered digit, before looking up at his lover.
"Subaru-kun is here, is he not? Ranmaru believes he might find some way to help Kamui-kun.. he's aware of Seishirou-san's treachery as well.." he whispered, cheeks coloring. He'd warned him. Then, he smiled sadly. "Mitsuhide-sama wants to atone. He doesn't mind being here.. is it right to sacrifice our happiness, when the ones we love have made their decisions?"
Ranmaru's words did ring true to some extent. He wanted to help Kamui, but how was he to do that? Kamui didn't want to return to Earth when all of those he loved were dead. Hokuto...didn't seem to mind it to much here, especially now that his younger self was present once more.
The more he thought about it...the more it seemed like Subaru was simply an unneeded addition.
"...Even if we were to...decide that we wanted to leave... It is not so easy. I've heard of the Hall of the Missing, but there is no telling where that place really leads. I have no home to return to..."
That was something to think about, indeed. Ranmaru had been curious about it, but he was careful not to approach it. Who knew where it went? If anything how he got here, he didn't want to risk disappearing on Subaru-san when he least expected it. His eyes grew somewhat serious and he glanced to a side.
Then, as if hitting upon a revelation, he turned and looked to Subaru with a smile. "We'll go to Nippon. Your Nippon. Ranmaru has learned of modern things here! It wont be so hard.. Ranmaru can work hard and get used to it.. surely.. surely something can be done! If we could leave.. you wouldn't have to suffer here.." he trailed off, blushing and looking down, holding Subaru's hand in his own.
"We don't need to be here.. for more than necessary.."
Ranmaru's eager desire to stay with Subaru enough to travel to a Japan that was incredibly different from his own...was almost heartbreaking, it was so sweet. It made Subaru hold him tightly once more, and he sighed.
"...But I can't promise it will still be there. The Angel's Kamui could have destroyed the kekkai. And if so...then the world as I know it no longer exists. And if it hasn't happened yet...it is destined to happen in the future. That is not a place I want to take you to. Mm... But... I will see if I can learn more about those who have escaped this place... And... I will speak with Kamui."
Ranmaru didn't mind going to a new Japan. The initial confusion had begun from living here, to understanding how things worked in this modern world.. he didn't have much to go back to, now that Japan was in Hideyoshi's hands. What else could he expect? That world he was fighting for was already in it's way of becoming a reality, and most possibly had become a reality. That world that Subaru-san lived in, it was most likely the future of peace they had dreamed of being in.
And if it was closer to it's end and needed to live, what was the harm in wanting to fight for it so it lived?
Holding Subaru back and looking up at him with a light smile, drawing back his head a little, Ranmaru nodded. "Do that. Ranmaru will learn to. And maybe.. just maybe, we can find a Nippon with peace..?" he tilted his head to a side and gave him a cheerful smile. "Even if the world has to end, if it's by your side, Ranmaru will be happy. Let's hope that doesn't happen for a long time, ne?"
Peace. Long life. Neither of those ideas had been a part of Subaru's thoughts for a very long time. He had wanted to die by Seishirou's hands, after all. He hadn't cared about the peace of the world...not enough to want to save it.
And though the City had surely made his mental stability much worse, it seemed to have secured his emotional stature. No... Not just the City. Ranmaru.
He really would need to have a talk with Kamui.
Taking a deep breath, Subaru nodded and caressed Ranmaru's cheek. "All right. We'll do what we can. I suppose...that's all we can do."
Leaning into Subaru's touch, Ranmaru smiled softly, a light chuckle escaping him and he moved a hand to cover the back of Subaru's, his eyes lighting up at his acquiesce. That was it! As long as they could fight, they would fight.. but until that time was necessary, surely they could live in peace, couldn't they?
He hoped it would be so..
Moving an arm around the back of Subaru's neck, Ranmaru drew him closer and then whispered, "A world with no war. It'll be ours, Subaru-san." He would keep his promise to Mitsuhide, and do as he said. A world with no more war.. their promise of peace. He'd make sure of it.
Smiling softly, he hesitated, before bringing his mouth close to Subaru's, and kissed him gently, letting his eyelids drop shut. I'll protect you. he thought to himself. I promise.
As usual anything relating to such intimacy left Subaru flustered and speechless, but at least not to the point where he was completely immobile. Not anymore, anyway. And for a moment, he actually did forget to be afraid that Mitsuhide would walk in on them.
With his arms wound back around Ranmaru's waist, he relaxed backwards onto the couch cushions once more. The kisses he returned were shy, but certainly not for lack of will.
For now he would enjoy this, and tomorrow... he would take care of research.
