Summary; Tayuya is revived by the City in Suigintou's N-field, but still unhealed.
Log;
Tayuya recalled the crunching of bones. Being flung carelessly about like a rag doll, accompanied by her muffled cries and the delicate snap of bone. Kimimaro always did like those, snapping them. And she could remember being down, the new curse seal pulsing, throbbing, hurting because it wasn’t working, she wasn’t winning, but Kimimaro… he’d always had a superior seal, superior power, superior kekkei genkai. And… he wasn’t sick anymore. She’d been counting on his illness, that he was too weakened, that he would cough up blood and stagger, but he stood strong, strong as he was when she was first placed under him, when she was first beaten by him, and had to bend her neck and swear to obey him under Orochimaru.
She couldn’t quite remember, but she’d thought she tried to spit on him, from her position on the ground, bleeding from the wounds of his bones, from her bones sticking through. From muscles led by the curse seal to continue trying to move even when they had no strength left. And then she could remember, she couldn’t forget his foot… or was it- no, it had to have been his foot, coming down hard on her back. The sudden scream inducing pain of the snap in the spine and then the numbness. She was hazy after that. Could remember… nails? In her, but no feeling. Blood running, but no feeling, just the daze of life running out, of being disconnected from her body as her superior, leader of the Sound Five, nailed her to a door in warning. And she had tried to breathe, but her back had broken, the signals were broken, she couldn’t tell herself to breathe, to live, to kick, to fight-
The sound ninja tried to sit up with a gasp than ended in a cut off whimper, conscious, now, eyes wide open, struggling for breath as hands reached for something, anything, back trying to arch but only barely able, still cracked, still broken, all her wounds still there, just lessened, just enough for life to return to her. Just enough for her to be able to stand being awake as she desperately tried to figure out where she was. Did Kimimaro have her still?
Suigintou had not left Tayuya’s side since retrieving her. Not to eat, to drink her tea at regular times, not even to sleep. She had cleaned her up as much as possible without moving her, removing her clothing carefully to sponge her down and clean her wounds. She wasn’t a medic, but she didn’t want anyone else around, so it was all she could do. She had wrapped her in a blanket to keep her warm, and waited for her to revive, all the while holding onto her lifeless hand. It was the least she could do for not being there when she was needed. For letting her master—no, friend—die.
She had nearly dozed off, an unusual feeling for a doll outside of her box, when Tayuya had woken up with a start. She wanted to tell her she was okay, that they were safe, to say anything, but she found herself unable to make any sound. Squeezing the hand she held, she tried to get the redhead’s attention before she reopened any of her wounds.
Tayuya couldn’t really feel the hand, couldn’t really do more than spasm and twitch as she tried, from shoulders down inhibited. But her mouth agape, eyes wild, she finally managed to focus, the doll coming into her vision. “Sui-“ She was parched, and a cold sweat had broken out on her skin. “Suigintou?” She was trying to calm, her heart not beating, but she thought it should be, it should have been racing, but even though it felt as such, she knew it didn’t, hadn’t ever since her arrival in the City. “Where’s- Where’s-“ She couldn’t get out Kimimaro’s name, the fear he had wanted to instill in her ruling her now.
Suigintou knew that Tayuya was fragile at this point, but couldn’t stop herself from leaning over and wrapping her small arms around her, almost falling on top of her chest. Her eyes flowed over with tears as she whispered repeatedly, “I’m sorry Tayuya.”
That caught the girl off guard. She stopped speaking, listening to Suigintou for a moment. And she wanted to move her arm, she was trying to move her arm, but gave up with a grimace. No use. “It’s…” She stopped for a moment, catching her nonexistent breath and trying to calm to nonexistent beating off her heart. “It’s fine. It didn’t hurt or anything, I’ll be okay…” All lies, of course, but Tayuya was a liar. Even when she only meant well by her untruths.
Suigintou knew Tayuya a better than to believe her, but played along, nodding weakly before letting go and standing up beside her. “I should have been there.” But she wouldn’t press the issue any more, and gently lifted Tayuya’s head enough to prop her up on the doll's knees. Reaching beside her, she opened a thermos of tea she had hastily made before leaving, and held the cup to the girl’s lips, urging her to drink. Surely the body needed to make up for what it missed out on while she was dead.
If Tayuya had been less hazy-headed, less pained, she may have protested this as decidedly not dignified and entirely way too… soft. But she was hazy, was in pain, and goddamnit, hadn’t she just admitted today- or was it yesterday- that she was, in fact, going soft? And she hated tea. But… it was the best thing she had ever tasted. She drank greedily until she finally felt a little sickened, eyes fluttering between closed and half open. “Where’s Kimimaro?” She finally managed to stabilize her voice, though she had to grit her teeth to do so, and hold painfully still.
Setting the cup to the side, Suigintou unconsciously started to brush her tiny fingers through Tayuya’s rough red hair. “He can’t reach you here, we’ll always be safe here.” She looked at the barren city outside of the broken house she had claimed for shelter, for once grateful that the city was hers and hers alone.
“Where are… we?” Tayuya managed to turn her head, biting her lip as she did so. Oh. “N-field.” She muttered, realizing. “I need…” Against her better judgment she tried to sit up. A spasm of pain crossed her face and she immediately abandoned that endeavor. “A healer.” She tried to think. “Fraulein’s the only- He’s the only one that will.” She felt the doll’s hands in her hair and her eyes closed for a moment, enjoying the feeling, that she could feel that. “… The only one I’ll let, anyway.” She added. Picky, even in this situation.
“I told him I would retrieve him after I found you.” She had promised a few people could see Tayuya, she didn’t really know why. Suigintou wanted her to herself to watch over, because it seemed as if they had nobody else they could trust. Her hands paused for a moment, and she asked, “Do you need him now? Or…would you rather rest a while longer.” Hoping for the latter, she anxiously waited for Tayuya’s response.
“Can’t…” Tayuya would have loved to just sink back into unconsciousness, to rest, but she knew it would be denied her. “It…” She grimaced, an attempt to smile. “Hurts too much, Suigintou. I lied…” Her first instinct was to shrug, but that only brought on another grit of her teeth. … She supposed she should stop that too, her jaw was- Well, she just had to stop moving altogether. “Lied big.” She muttered.
Panicking, Suigintou quickly reached for Tayuya’s discarded clothing and stuffed it where her legs had been moments ago, keeping her head propped up. She leaned over quickly and kissed the redhead on the forehead, quickly wiping away worried tears as she said, “I’ll return with him then.”
Tayuya only managed a twitch in the corner of her lips, eyes squeezed tightly shut. She didn’t want to cry. It hurt, it hurt, but she couldn’t. She hated being weak, hated having to rely on others, hated… well, maybe she didn’t hate having people concerned for her. … She’d have to make this up to Suigintou sometime. … Didn’t she promise less than a week ago she wouldn’t die on her? But no matter.
She waited until Suigintou had left to find the knight before she sobbed.
