Log:

Although Kurama had been bold enough to challenge the vampire, he had no intention of drawing the creature to his apartment. He quickly notified Hiei of his impending absence, then moved some distance from his building before assuming his fox form, taking care not to leave a trail. Let's see how long it takes him to find me, the fox mused as he trotted through the streets, then selected a spot in the middle of one to wait for Alucard, tails draped primly over his front paws.

Somewhere near, a hound bayed eerily, followed by the ghostly sound of a low horn. The pounding of hooves tore through the earth, soul slaves and their horses entirely intact and a good representation of being alive, but not. Another howl, closer, the vampire was hot on the trail of his future pet.

Large ears swiveled at the sound, and Kurama seemed to smile. He stretched languorously and yawned, then summoned some ivy to create a net across the street before he bolted.

The net seemed to block the way, but the creatures shifted to shadows and reformed on the other side. A horn blew again and the hound split off, one hellhound becoming three as they shifted directions to form a trap.

So the vampire had brought or created a proper pack. Kurama could clearly hear one hound, and smelled another. He imagined there were more, and slipped beneath a fence before scurrying up a flight of steps and leaping across the street to another building. This gave him a better vantage point, and with normal hounds, the maneuver would have served to throw them off his scent. Knowing the hounds were anything but normal, the fox quickly ran through a mental catalogue of his plants. He eventually chose the Makai equivalent of a blackberry bush, and dropped a single seed to the ground before he hurried to the other side of the building and dropped down to the street. The seed would not germinate until Kurama's pursuers were right on top of it. Then they would find themselves in the midst of a rather large and bloodthirsty thorned bush.

The first hound pursued over the seed and found itself caught up in the thorns. With a whine of annoyance, it thrashed and writhed, feeling the thorns prick at its flesh. Huffing in defeat, the hellhound shifted to blood, droplets spraying out and being absorbed by the other two hounds, far enough away to miss the seed. The mounted horsemen circled the buildings, waiting below.

At this point, Kurama began to wonder what he had gotten himself into. He had not expected either of his traps to be deadly to the vampire—had in fact been holding himself back just a little since they were still in a populated area—but he had expected them to slow Alucard down more than they had. Having scaled another building to get a better idea of where the hunting party was, Kurama realized that he was surrounded. He growled in annoyance. If he could make it to the forest, he could summon one of his more dangerous plants. Intent on this plan, he picked a route that would hopefully allow him to slip between the horsemen and the hounds.

The horsemen reared as the fox ran between the legs of the beasts, trying to smash hooves down on them, but missing. Changing directions, the mounted riders summoned the hounds with a horn, beasts huffing and howling to have had the fox slip from their grasp.

As soon as he crossed the border between city and forest, Kurama summoned the ojigi plant of Makai. Gigantic thorned trunks reared up as leaves unfurled around sharp-toothed maws hissing fire. This was not a plant he liked to leave unattended, and so Kurama leapt into the branches of a nearby tree, protected by the leaves' cover and by the vines coiled at the trunk's base. A firm press of youki against the ojigi's rudimentary awareness prevented the foul-tempered plant from attacking its master.

The first hound sniffed around the base of the tree, the other hound moving to circle from the other side. Riders paused, waiting to see where the hounds would go. Alucard could smell the foxy around somewhere near.

Their movement was enough to attract the ojigi's attentions. Three trunks lunged for the hunting party, the mouths spitting fire as the leaves reached to trap and crush the riders and their animals. In his tree, Kurama remained absolutely still, eyes glowing red as he exercised his power.

The riders shifted back to shadows, hounds opening their mouths and devouring the souls once more. The hounds, meanwhile, were being mauled and pounded by the trees until all that was left were smears of blood. All was still for a moment, until the blood shifted to black smoke, twisting through the trees and winding upwards, solidifying to shadows, then a hound, rump in the air, ready to pounce, in front of Kurama. ~Hello~ he said mentally, smirking.

Kurama snarled and quickly forced the ojigi back into its dormant state before it decided to try to kill both him and the vampire. He plunged off of the tree limb he'd been watching from, at the same time directing the branches to stab at the hellhound. The kitsune knew now that he was in over his head, and cursed his foolishness. Hiei was never going to let him live this down.

The hound was stabbed and gave a yelping cry of pain, not shifting to shadows, simply lying there on the ground, whining pitifully. He scrabbled weakly, attempting to rise, then fell dramatically and exhaled, eyes closing.

The scrabbling brought Kurama up short. He looked over his shoulder, tails lashing the air, and scrutinized the tableau. Alucard looked dead, or at the very least badly hurt. How was Kurama to tell if either were the truth? He had not taken the time to learn all he could about the vampire. Suddenly uneasy, Kurama turned back to face Alucard. He ventured no nearer, but commanded the tree to release the limp hound.

The hound flopped down bonelessly, eyes opened sluggishly and he tried to drag himself back and away from Kurama. His wounds were bleeding, but the blood did not return to Alucard's body.

Kurama's human conscience made itself known at that point. He edged closer to the vampire, ears half-flattened in concern. If Alucard truly were hurt, the fox was capable of offering succor. Twenty years ago, he would not have bothered. He had since rediscovered the value of mercy.

Alucard lifted his head and perked his ears slightly, leaning forward to sniff at Kurama's muzzle. He grinned and in a moment, was human in form and clutching the fox close to himself, "Caught. Now you're mine."

The fox yelped and struggled against the vampire's hold. Unable to squirm free, he called on the plants to retaliate, even as he gave a warning growl and bared his teeth.

The childish looking vampire squeezed the fox tighter and in a moment, they were engulfed in shadows. Moments later, shadows parted and they were on the outskirts of the woods. "We had an agreement. I caught you."

Our agreement is contingent upon your ability to catch and keep me, came the surly reply. To say that Kurama was put out by the fact that Alucard had tricked him would be an understatement.

"Poor foxy, I've caught you, but Arthur will ensure I keep you. Just remember, you asked for this. I would have grown sick of having a pet after a few days, then you would be free. Now, Master will seal you," Girlycard replied and nibbled on Kurama's ear.

Seal? That was one word no youkai ever wanted to hear in relation to itself. Kurama struggled harder, kicking at Alucard with his hind legs and wondering if it would do any good to summon the plants to help him.

Alucard nuzzled the top of the fox's head, "Don't worry. I'll feed you and take you for walks. And I will find you a good girl fox." Then half smiled and clung harder to the fox.

His hold was making it difficult to breathe, and so Kurama subsided, going limp in the vampire's arms. The fox's ears were now mostly flattened as he wondered just what the sealing would involve. Perhaps there would be time to escape before it happened.
