Summary; In a night full of ghosts and shadows, a few living people have their own fated meetings...
Log;
It had already been a very long day. Riou had lost track of the ghosts somewhere in the hundreds. They came from both sides of the wars, those he knew and didn't know, with messages full of love and hope or hate and vengeance; talking to him, shouting at him, shouting at each other, even a fair few trying to kill him or each other. He was lucky they were incorporeal. He was not so lucky that the one who stayed the longest was Luca Blight.
That bastard.
And finally all the others had disappeared when Genkaku had arrived. His father. It didn't matter that they weren't related by blood. The previous bearer of the Bright Shield Rune. Who wasn't too pleased with how Riou had been acting.
He has been your best friend for your entire life!
"...but it seems I didn't really know him very well after all..."
Do you really believe that? Can you really give up on him?
"...it's better than the alternative! He wants to duel for the Rune of Beginning..."
Does he really? Is that what you think?
"You know what that means! That duel can only end with one of us dead. At least you and Han Cunningham sealed your runes away!"
But you and Jowy... are stronger than that...
And then Genkaku had suddenly stiffened, his translucent body rippling in an unseen wind. He then warned-- directed-- practically demanded that Riou must go north into the dark forest immediately surrounding the city. Now. At this very moment! Before Riou could get in more than a confused "What?" the older man had disappeared and no other ghosts had risen to take his place.
And so Riou found himself tromping through the wilds of a forest he had been warned about -- full of shadows cats and creeping things, especially to be avoided at night-- on perhaps a wild goose chase at the behest of his long dead father, who might or might not have been a figment of his imagination. I am really not liking these curses, Riou thought ruefully to himself as he tripped over a particularly gnarly tree root and nearly landed in a prickly bush. At least he hadn't met anything out here yet.
The moon's silvery illumination cast a brighter glow than the false torch carried by Riou as he abruptly came across a small clearing in the woods. And slumped upon the ground in the midst of that clearing lay a very familiar figure, golden hair glinting softly within the light. Riou stared in shock, blinked, and stared a bit more.
Jowy?
It couldn't be. What possible purpose would the other boy have for being out here at that time of night? Unless ghosts were playing tricks on him too. Riou carefully walked up to the still figure and knelt beside him, reaching out a tentative hand. Warm and solid, definitely not a vision then. Although perhaps not as warm as he should have been. Riou then caught sight of a trickle of blood leaching from a bandaged left arm.
Damn. He was hurt. Riou stood up, looked around, and hesitated. He didn't dare heal Jowy himself... he couldn't very well use Bright Shield on the bearer of Black Sword, could he? If he somehow set off the other rune... Argh, why had he thrown his tablet at Luca Blight earlier that day? He couldn't even call for help, as it was.
With a sigh, Riou settled down next to Jowy and carefully checked over his wounds-- nothing too serious it seemed-- if one would classify being passed out in the middle of a dangerous man-eating forest as 'not serious'. "What are you doing here?" he asked the other's prone body, as if half expecting a reply. "What am I doing out here? And why do we keep meeting like this?"
This was helping nothing. Riou gently brushed the hair back from his once-bestfriend's face, gathered the other within his arms, and awkwardly settled him unto Riou's back. Definitely no more tripping into thorn bushes tonight. This really is not a very good way to be avoiding each other's presence Riou thought and with a soft, rueful laugh set back off for the forest's edge.

Though, considering he was currently huddling in an alleyway like a street cat, perhaps any worries they had would be well-founded. He didn’t exactly take good care of himself when in this sort of ‘I want to stay away from everyone’ mood. At least he was only planning to hide for maybe the night? He could so sleep in the alley for just one night.
Or, at least, that had been the original plan; it washing from his mind the moment his eyes found two familiar people in the distance. One he didn’t know so well, but vaguely recognized from his time as a child; the other… was one he knew quite well, who he cared for immensely, and who… seemed to not be okay at the moment. “J-Jowy?” Before he knew it, he was up and running to catch up to them, slowing just when he was within an arm’s reach. “W-what’s wrong with him? What happened?” he asked, beside Riou now, but focusing entirely on Jowy, the questions pouring out of him in his worry.
After a moment, his expressive eyes finally settled on Riou, a small embarrassed blush creeping to his face no matter how hard he tried to will it away, “Is… is he going to be… um… okay?”
no subject
Kamui. Riou still could recognize him, even though they had only met in their childforms. A close friend a Jowy's, he had learned at least that much on his searches of the network.
"He has... what looks like to be blade wounds. They don't look to be too serious, but something has caused him to lose consciousness. Are you a healer? Or do you have a way to contact one? I can't really do it myself..." Riou trailed off as he paused and shifted Jowy's weight once more.
no subject
He looked away for a moment, kind of wishing he hadn't run to them. All he was doing was making himself look stupid. Not... that he could really look any more idiotic now than he did when he was playing with these two as a child; what with him baking them sweets and lamenting about his future as a bride.
"I..." his blush deepened a little as he tried to shake those thoughts from his head. Maybe Riou and Jowy wouldn't remember any of that! Besides, helping Jowy was really more important at the moment. "Let's try to get him back to his place?"
no subject
How aggravating. As if Riou wasn't one of the most powerful healers in the city as it was. But Jowy's injuries did not appear too severe, and Riou might indeed trigger something rather severe in trying to heal him.
"His apartment... it's nearby, isn't it?" Riou asked and then smiled at the obviously distressed Kamui. "And can you take his sword? It's rather awkward carrying it..."
no subject
So not thinking about that right now, damn it.
The smaller boy perked a bit when he was spoken to again. "Y-yeah, he lives close to here." He looked at the weapon he was asked to carry. Ha! Carrying a sword... that he could do! Shyly, he took the sword, staying quiet. Like he knew what to say anyway; he wasn't very good at conversing with near strangers, especially in situations like this. All he could think to do was just walk along at the moment, glancing to Jowy often to make sure his condition hadn't changed. He was just a little... protective. Paranoid maybe?
no subject
"I don't suppose you know what Jowy was doing this evening? Or why he'd be running around in the middle of the forest at this time of night?"
Nevermind what I was doing running around in the middle of a forest at this time of night.
no subject
He looked back to the other when he was addressed again, thinking for a moment before shaking his head. "I'm sorry, I don't. I..." was busying being counter-kidnapped from Seishirou by Subaru. Because Kamui had been a stupid brat, willingly allowing himself to be lured in by the killer, and then staying because he naively believed Seishirou was good. And then he grew back up and felt like the biggest ass ever. "I don't."
As they approached the door, a loud, excited howl was suddenly heard, Kamui pausing and blinking. "He kept them...?"
no subject
"I suppose we'll have to ask him then, when he awakes," said Riou. Or rather Kamui would have to... Riou was not planning on lingering that long. He tilted his head slightly in surprise as the sound of yipping filled the air. "...dogs?"
no subject
"Ah! This one!" he cried out a little in triumph has he finally found the right key, trying to remember how it looked so he wouldn't have to search again. Of course, the moment he opened the door, he was practically knocked down by his dogs; the two ignoring Riou entirely, which was probably a good thing? It at least would give him time to sneak in and lay Jowy down before the animals realized there was someone else to tackle.
no subject
"I am calling you 'sack of potatoes' next time we meet," he muttered mostly to himself, carefully checking over Jowy to make sure that his wounds hadn't worsened during the trip.
After being reassured, Riou rolled his shoulders and massaged the base of his back and the back of his neck. Now to find that... what were they called again? ...computers? He took stock of Jowy's apartment as he wandered about-- bare but the minimum of furniture, it seemed devoid of almost all personal possessions. It almost reminded him of his own temporary lodgings that he vacated each new day.
no subject
"Jowy..." he said quietly, eyes sad and worried, before he took a seat on the bed, taking Jowy's closest hand and holding it in his own. Maybe this way Jowy would know he wasn't alone? That there was someone waiting for him...
no subject
And send. Riou turned to the door and then hesitated, glancing back at Jowy. Recently the city had come under the attack of a rash of gruesome kidnappings, and he worried if a healer would even be available at this time of night. He was certain Kamui would continue to watch over Jowy but...
Kamui sat on the bed tenderly holding Jowy's hand. Riou choked back a sudden laugh as memories of Princess Kamui and Frog Jowy and Bride Kamui with Little Groom Jowy came to mind, but then he sobered quickly.
Jowy had had a bride before. A real one. Jillia. Who Jowy and Riou had held crushes for their entire childhoods. Who Jowy had sacrificed to the Beast Rune, as witnessed by the entire Highland Army. Riou closed his eyes and sighed.
Do I try to warn him? But why would he believe a stranger's word over his own friend's? And if Jowy truly wants to move on and live here in peace, do I have the right to disturb that chance? But if something should happen, and I did nothing...
But there was no Highland here and he doubted Jowy would try to take over the city. He wouldn't, would he? There'd be no reason for Jowy to act as he once had as King... but then again, Riou believed there to be no reason to duel to the death for the Rune of Beginnings here, and yet that still seemed to be Jowy's desire.
Riou pressed his right hand to his forehead. Still cool to the touch. Bright Shield yet slumbered. It was a very, very long day.
"How long have you known Jowy?" he called out quietly to the amethyst eyed boy.
no subject
Once again, his gaze settled on his unconcious friend, expression still worried but soft and gentle. It was obvious he had come to care much for the older boy. "Why do you ask?"
no subject
"I've known him for... twelve years," he said, gazing off into the distance. "But it's still hard to really know a person..."
Twelve years. Your best friend! Perhaps the closest person you've ever known, even more than Genkaku or Nanami...
He tapped gloved fingers against the armrest of the chair. Tap. Tap. Tap. Right hand and Bright Shield moving to some unheard melody.
"Has he told you about his past at all?"
no subject
"What was he like before?" Oh, he was curious, and if this other boy had known Jowy for so long, then... he would know almost everything, right?
no subject
Riou leaned back and closed his eyes, yet even so felt every muscle in his body tense. How to say this? It was going to be difficult-- perhaps even impossible to convey what he-- He didn't want to be here, doing this. He just wanted to lie down somewhere dark and forget this, forget that the entire year and war had happened.
Weak, weak, weak... gone from Dunan not even a month and it's leader has come to this? Riou sighed and opened his eyes. Enough running, at least for now.
"And then our youth brigade was attacked and destroyed by troops from our own kingdom. Lead by our unit leader and by our own prince. And then Jowy changed. Or perhaps I just never really understood him after all..."
no subject
The smile was, however, short-lived. "Changed? Changed how?" Oh, how familiar that sounded.
no subject
"He changed into someone completely unrecognizable to me."
How much to tell? Enough to give a warning, but not so much to ruin all chances. Jowy deserved at least...
"We were the only ones who survived the attack. We were branded traitors and escaped through the countryside with my sister, gaining allies as we went, being pursued by our former prince who destroyed entire villages-- everything in his wake. We eventually took refuge within the capitol city of the nation which had once been our kingdom's greatest enemy, a country which was now taking the blame for what our own prince had done. And then--" Riou's voice stuttered to a stop. Had he ever really told anyone this? He couldn't speak of it to Viktor & Flik, the night that it happened, and after that everyone simply knew...
"And then Jowy betrayed us and killed the person who had given us sanctuary, returned to our mad prince and gave him the key that lead to the capitol city's destruction."
Why? Why?! That's something he could never understand. No matter how often he had asked Jowy in those fleeting meetings since their separation, he simply could never understand...
"And that is where our story begins..."
no subject
It didn't make sense, really. Jowy had been nothing but nice to Kamui this entire time; well, aside from that one curse day. But that wasn't Jowy... right? He couldn't imagine the other teenager hurting anything or anyone on his own will, unless they had it coming. "He... maybe he had a reason...?"
After a moment, he looked to Riou, eyes very sad, "Does it get worse?"
no subject
Does it get worse? Riou bit back the urge to laugh, it would probably sound a bit more than hysterical. That's where it began...
"You're his friend-- and he deserves the right to tell you his side first, at least. I don't think he would lie to you." Not lies... But perhaps not quite tell the whole truth... "But if you ever want to know the full story from the other side, I can be found on the network quite easily." On the network, if not in person.
Riou tilted his head so that his gaze met the other boy's, golden-brown eyes to deep purple. "But be careful, Kamui. In the best of times, Jowy may be everything as I once described him. But if push comes to shove, he will sacrifice anything, he will kill anyone, and no bond of love, or blood, or friendship will stand in his way."
no subject
Perhaps it would be his own devotion to his loved ones that would bring his life, and the world, to an end?
"I... I see."
no subject
Even after all this, I want... I don't want...
But Jowy had also spoken of killing everyone within Dunan Castle, of no regrets, even with Jillia only a few weeks dead by Jowy's own hand. Riou couldn't simply turn a blind eye-- perhaps, he hoped dearly, this warning would come to nothing at all in the end.
"I hope you never have cause to believe this warning and that you never have to see that side of Jowy. It's possible here in this city, with no Highland and no shadows from the past-- "
Except the ones that the capricious city deities keep drudging up...
"...possible for a new beginning and second chances. But if you are determined to stay with him, there is one more thing you should know," Riou said as he turned away from Kamui, from watching Jowy laying so still upon the bed.
He carefully lifted his right hand from the chair-rest and held it in front of him, his eyes gazing past--through-- his dark glove.
"Do you believe in fate?"
Buwah~ Originally with the wrong SN x_x;;;;
"Like I've had much of a choice." He winced a little at how bitter and biting that sounded, that not having been his intention at all. "Why?"
Ha! I thought vampire!Kamui was coming for Riou for traumatizing X!Kamui...
"Has Jowy told you anything about the rune he bears in his right hand?"
He might just do that! XD After he guts Seishirou?
Actually, now that he was hearing about all this, he was realizing how little Jowy had told him about anything. He didn't know him at all, did he? Really, that thought kinda hurt, in a way. "He hasn't told me... anything..."
As long he takes down Sei first! Sei's after Riou for taking flowers from the tree when chibi...
"In the beginning, there was darkness.
Then, the darkness shed a tear.
From that tear, the brothers Sword and Shield were born.
Shield claimed it could defend against any attack.
Sword claimed it could slice through anything.
The brothers began a legendary battle.
At the end, both Sword and Shield shattered.
Sword became the sky, Shield became the earth,
and the sparks from the battle became the stars.
As for the jewels, they fell to the ground and became the True Runes--
The runes that all other runes were born from."

"This is Bright Shield counterpart to the rune that Jowy bears-- Black Sword. They are opposites, protection to destruction, renewing to conquering, chaos to order-- two broken halves that together would form the Rune of Beginnings which controls the power of creation in our world.
Their purpose is to destroy each other and in so doing, be reunited as one again. They are the runes that judge war and they will drive their bearers to battle, destined for opposite sides, until one of them is dead. That is the will of the runes and the fate of their bearers. Supposedly." Riou said and finally tilted his head back, looking towards the still figure upon the bed, upon the figure's bare right hand.
"But... I don't believe in fate. At least not like that. The situations that Jowy and I found ourselves in... they were determined by our own choices, not just twists of fate. Everything... was our own choice. Even this end." Riou pulled his glove back upon his hand and the soft reddish-gold light that had been suffusing the room faded away.
"I don't think it has to be that way... but Jowy..." Riou paused and sighed.
He was outnumbered, three to one. Bright Shield, Black Sword, Jowy, all them calling forth for this duel. Well, he was used to being outnumbered.
I will be strong enough.
"He seems to think this duel is inevitable. He refuses to seal the runes away-- although I rather need the use of Bright Shield myself back home, but... I know there must be another way. I don't want to kill him, but I can't allow him to kill me either. There are people back home who are... depending on me. But... it doesn't have to be that way.
His rune-- Jowy's-- may be draining his energy now. Probably after he uses it, as it's not a healer like mine, but... maybe even other times too. I think I may have convinced him to try surpressing the runes or... maybe he's simply patronizing me. But, I can't watch over him. Not like you. Staying too close to him like this... that may be tempting fate too much, even for me. But-- he is your friend, right? You have faith in him too? That he'll be strong enough to not succumb to the rune..." The smile that Riou directed at Kamui was tinged with sadness.
It doesn't have to be that way. I don't know how, yet... so...
So, for the moment I run.
Or I would, if I had the energy to get out of this chair.

He regarded Kamui with a self-conscious look before turning away, embarrassed. "You... didn't have to worry so much, Kamui--" Kamui had been holding his hand all this time and in all honesty, Jowy didn't know what to say to that.
He didn't know what to do either after all that Riou had said.
It wasn't that Riou had exaggerated. Jowy believed what Riou had said were not exactly far from truth but... it hurt to be reminded of what he was--
It almost brought back Luca's laughter... taunting, true.
no subject
What if they just ended up getting in a fight? What if Jowy was hurt? What if Jowy killed...
No, he wasn't going to think about this now. Or rather, he was going to distract himself, at least for the moment. As brief a moment as it would be. "Are you... okay now, Jowy? Do you hurt anywhere? Can I get you anything?" He lightly touched the other's forehead, as if checking for fever.
no subject
He gave Riou a silent look and wondered about what drove the other to help him.
no subject
"Really? And here I was told I could be quite inspirational at times, if rambly. Anyway, sacks of potatoes don't get to say such things. And what exactly was this sack of potatoes doing running around in the middle of the forest in the middle of the night?" he replied dryly.
no subject
no subject
"Um..." he kinda butted in, feeling bad but at the same time not, "you two aren't about to get into an argument that will lead to a fight of epic and bloody proportions..." Blink, blink; Kamui's eyes wide in a 'I'm not sure how to deal with this' way. "R-right?"
no subject
"And no, this is about normal for us," he replied to Kamui.
Besides fights of epic and bloody proportions would also require him to get out of the chair.
no subject
"You were still little today, I remember..."
no subject
God, how he hated his blush reflex. "N-not talking about that." He plopped down on the bed again, sitting with his back to Jowy and his arms crossed. He was actually pouting a little as well, for added effect. "All of that? Never happened."
no subject
no subject
"I don't like you at all," he whined again, this time on purpose and playfully; shoving Jowy lightly. The mood... could use lightening, even though all those things he had been told were still in the back of his mind. He would ask Jowy about it all later, in private.
For now, he just... didn't want Jowy to be stressed...

You got over her death rather fast, didn't you, Jowy?
He was very tired.
