Summary; In a night full of ghosts and shadows, a few living people have their own fated meetings...
Log;

It had already been a very long day. Riou had lost track of the ghosts somewhere in the hundreds. They came from both sides of the wars, those he knew and didn't know, with messages full of love and hope or hate and vengeance; talking to him, shouting at him, shouting at each other, even a fair few trying to kill him or each other. He was lucky they were incorporeal. He was not so lucky that the one who stayed the longest was Luca Blight.

That bastard.

And finally all the others had disappeared when Genkaku had arrived. His father. It didn't matter that they weren't related by blood. The previous bearer of the Bright Shield Rune. Who wasn't too pleased with how Riou had been acting.

He has been your best friend for your entire life!

"...but it seems I didn't really know him very well after all..."

Do you really believe that? Can you really give up on him?

"...it's better than the alternative! He wants to duel for the Rune of Beginning..."

Does he really? Is that what you think?

"You know what that means! That duel can only end with one of us dead. At least you and Han Cunningham sealed your runes away!"

But you and Jowy... are stronger than that...

And then Genkaku had suddenly stiffened, his translucent body rippling in an unseen wind. He then warned-- directed-- practically demanded that Riou must go north into the dark forest immediately surrounding the city. Now. At this very moment! Before Riou could get in more than a confused "What?" the older man had disappeared and no other ghosts had risen to take his place.

And so Riou found himself tromping through the wilds of a forest he had been warned about -- full of shadows cats and creeping things, especially to be avoided at night-- on perhaps a wild goose chase at the behest of his long dead father, who might or might not have been a figment of his imagination. I am really not liking these curses, Riou thought ruefully to himself as he tripped over a particularly gnarly tree root and nearly landed in a prickly bush. At least he hadn't met anything out here yet.

The moon's silvery illumination cast a brighter glow than the false torch carried by Riou as he abruptly came across a small clearing in the woods. And slumped upon the ground in the midst of that clearing lay a very familiar figure, golden hair glinting softly within the light. Riou stared in shock, blinked, and stared a bit more.

Jowy?

It couldn't be. What possible purpose would the other boy have for being out here at that time of night? Unless ghosts were playing tricks on him too. Riou carefully walked up to the still figure and knelt beside him, reaching out a tentative hand. Warm and solid, definitely not a vision then. Although perhaps not as warm as he should have been. Riou then caught sight of a trickle of blood leaching from a bandaged left arm.

Damn. He was hurt. Riou stood up, looked around, and hesitated. He didn't dare heal Jowy himself... he couldn't very well use Bright Shield on the bearer of Black Sword, could he? If he somehow set off the other rune... Argh, why had he thrown his tablet at Luca Blight earlier that day? He couldn't even call for help, as it was.

With a sigh, Riou settled down next to Jowy and carefully checked over his wounds-- nothing too serious it seemed-- if one would classify being passed out in the middle of a dangerous man-eating forest as 'not serious'. "What are you doing here?" he asked the other's prone body, as if half expecting a reply. "What am I doing out here? And why do we keep meeting like this?"

This was helping nothing. Riou gently brushed the hair back from his once-bestfriend's face, gathered the other within his arms, and awkwardly settled him unto Riou's back. Definitely no more tripping into thorn bushes tonight. This really is not a very good way to be avoiding each other's presence Riou thought and with a soft, rueful laugh set back off for the forest's edge.

Hiding. Yes, that seemed the logical course of action at the moment, seeing as most now knew exactly how strange he was as a child. It was… embarrassing; enough so that he had politely excused himself from the residence of those twins who seemed to care so much about him the moment he changed back to normal. Hopefully they wouldn’t worry about him too much.

Though, considering he was currently huddling in an alleyway like a street cat, perhaps any worries they had would be well-founded. He didn’t exactly take good care of himself when in this sort of ‘I want to stay away from everyone’ mood. At least he was only planning to hide for maybe the night? He could so sleep in the alley for just one night.

Or, at least, that had been the original plan; it washing from his mind the moment his eyes found two familiar people in the distance. One he didn’t know so well, but vaguely recognized from his time as a child; the other… was one he knew quite well, who he cared for immensely, and who… seemed to not be okay at the moment. “J-Jowy?” Before he knew it, he was up and running to catch up to them, slowing just when he was within an arm’s reach. “W-what’s wrong with him? What happened?” he asked, beside Riou now, but focusing entirely on Jowy, the questions pouring out of him in his worry.

After a moment, his expressive eyes finally settled on Riou, a small embarrassed blush creeping to his face no matter how hard he tried to will it away, “Is… is he going to be… um… okay?”

"Healer? No, I..." Of course he wasn't a healer: that would make him far too useful, now wouldn't it? "I'm sorry, I'm not, and I don't know anyone, but," a worried frown, his attention once again shifting to the unconscious one, "I can help you bandage him?" Oh, how utterly unhelpful he felt at the moment. "Or help carry him. I don't know..."

He looked away for a moment, kind of wishing he hadn't run to them. All he was doing was making himself look stupid. Not... that he could really look any more idiotic now than he did when he was playing with these two as a child; what with him baking them sweets and lamenting about his future as a bride.

"I..." his blush deepened a little as he tried to shake those thoughts from his head. Maybe Riou and Jowy wouldn't remember any of that! Besides, helping Jowy was really more important at the moment. "Let's try to get him back to his place?"

[identity profile] fateisabitch.livejournal.com 2007-04-07 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, his place as a connection." Oh, he remembered that quite well from the time he and Jowy had gotten drunk together. Jowy had been on the computer while they were doing... things...

So not thinking about that right now, damn it.

The smaller boy perked a bit when he was spoken to again. "Y-yeah, he lives close to here." He looked at the weapon he was asked to carry. Ha! Carrying a sword... that he could do! Shyly, he took the sword, staying quiet. Like he knew what to say anyway; he wasn't very good at conversing with near strangers, especially in situations like this. All he could think to do was just walk along at the moment, glancing to Jowy often to make sure his condition hadn't changed. He was just a little... protective. Paranoid maybe?

[identity profile] fateisabitch.livejournal.com 2007-04-07 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
"I... I can do that." Picking up the pace, Kamui led the other to Jowy's apartment, knowing the way far too well. He really spent way too much time there.

He looked back to the other when he was addressed again, thinking for a moment before shaking his head. "I'm sorry, I don't. I..." was busying being counter-kidnapped from Seishirou by Subaru. Because Kamui had been a stupid brat, willingly allowing himself to be lured in by the killer, and then staying because he naively believed Seishirou was good. And then he grew back up and felt like the biggest ass ever. "I don't."

As they approached the door, a loud, excited howl was suddenly heard, Kamui pausing and blinking. "He kept them...?"

[identity profile] fateisabitch.livejournal.com 2007-04-07 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
"Y-yeah... they're mine, actually." He wasn't going to explain how or why his dogs were at Jowy's, though. Besides, he was too busy shifting through his full keychain, trying to figure out which key went to Jowy's door. He needed to stop jumping from residence to residence, damn it.

"Ah! This one!" he cried out a little in triumph has he finally found the right key, trying to remember how it looked so he wouldn't have to search again. Of course, the moment he opened the door, he was practically knocked down by his dogs; the two ignoring Riou entirely, which was probably a good thing? It at least would give him time to sneak in and lay Jowy down before the animals realized there was someone else to tackle.

[identity profile] fateisabitch.livejournal.com 2007-04-07 08:32 am (UTC)(link)
After Kamui finally got away from the dog's enthusiastic greetings (which involved much licking, chewing, and then squawking on Kamui's part), he slipped into Jowy's room, eyeing the prone form on the bed. What if... Jowy didn't wake up? He was probably the one Kamui was closest to right now. He didn't want to think of how he would deal with him not being around anymore...

"Jowy..." he said quietly, eyes sad and worried, before he took a seat on the bed, taking Jowy's closest hand and holding it in his own. Maybe this way Jowy would know he wasn't alone? That there was someone waiting for him...

[identity profile] fateisabitch.livejournal.com 2007-04-07 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
Kamui blinked out of his concentration, looking to the near-stranger curiously. "A few months now, I guess." A slight shrug. He really wasn't keeping track of time. Such things... didn't matter much in this place.

Once again, his gaze settled on his unconcious friend, expression still worried but soft and gentle. It was obvious he had come to care much for the older boy. "Why do you ask?"

[identity profile] fateisabitch.livejournal.com 2007-04-07 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Not really." His attention didn't leave from the sleeping one's face. "But I haven't told him all that much about mine either, really. Not everything." Which seemed... odd. He wanted to know everything about Jowy, wanted that closeness, and yet... they were both holding back. Even the closed off Subaru had told him more of his tragic past than Jowy had. It was... weird.

"What was he like before?" Oh, he was curious, and if this other boy had known Jowy for so long, then... he would know almost everything, right?

[identity profile] fateisabitch.livejournal.com 2007-04-07 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Kamui couldn't help but muse on how that kind of sounded like Fuuma in ways (or at least how Fuuma had been before...): loyal, dependable, kind, and strong. Just an all-around good person. It made the mussy-haired boy smile a little, holding Jowy's hand a little closer to himself.

The smile was, however, short-lived. "Changed? Changed how?" Oh, how familiar that sounded.

[identity profile] fateisabitch.livejournal.com 2007-04-08 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
His eyes widened exponentially. Betrayal... yes, that was something Kamui was quite familiar with, but to think that Jowy...

It didn't make sense, really. Jowy had been nothing but nice to Kamui this entire time; well, aside from that one curse day. But that wasn't Jowy... right? He couldn't imagine the other teenager hurting anything or anyone on his own will, unless they had it coming. "He... maybe he had a reason...?"

After a moment, he looked to Riou, eyes very sad, "Does it get worse?"

[identity profile] fateisabitch.livejournal.com 2007-04-08 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Kamui looked away, still holding onto Jowy's hand, but obviously very hurt. Jowy might turn on him, just like that, if the right situation presented itself. He might try to kill him, just like that. Just like Fuuma. Why did he seem to be drawn to these sort of people? Not that... it mattered that much, not now: no matter what, he wouldn't be able to detach himself from Jowy. Just like he couldn't detach himself from Fuuma, even after all his twin star had done to him.

Perhaps it would be his own devotion to his loved ones that would bring his life, and the world, to an end?

"I... I see."

Buwah~ Originally with the wrong SN x_x;;;;

[identity profile] fateisabitch.livejournal.com 2007-04-08 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Did he believe in fate? That was almost... a stupid thing to ask, considering how much of Kamui's life was supposively seeped in it. No, he hadn't believed at first, had rejected it all, but in the end... it just caught up with him. He couldn't seem to fight it, no matter how hard he tried.

"Like I've had much of a choice." He winced a little at how bitter and biting that sounded, that not having been his intention at all. "Why?"

He might just do that! XD After he guts Seishirou?

[identity profile] fateisabitch.livejournal.com 2007-04-08 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
"Rune? No, he hasn't..." Even though Kamui had seen... a bit of it first-hand during Jowy's fight with Lyra and Kamui-kun. Not that he really knew that was Jowy's rune or anything. He didn't... know much about the powers of Jowy and Riou's world in general.

Actually, now that he was hearing about all this, he was realizing how little Jowy had told him about anything. He didn't know him at all, did he? Really, that thought kinda hurt, in a way. "He hasn't told me... anything..."

[identity profile] fateisabitch.livejournal.com 2007-04-08 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
All Kamui could do was look at the other curiously, not sure what to make of his words. It sounded like something from a storybook. A legend. But... was it real for them?

[identity profile] for-destiny.livejournal.com 2007-04-08 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
Jowy had regained consciousness shortly after Riou had begun his speech, but chose to remain unmoving in order to hear more of what his old friend had to say. "That's a bit over-dramatic for you, you know, Riou?" He sat up, wincing slightly at the dull pain on his left arm and on his right hand. "The rune's not doing anything right now, either. I didn't use it."

He regarded Kamui with a self-conscious look before turning away, embarrassed. "You... didn't have to worry so much, Kamui--" Kamui had been holding his hand all this time and in all honesty, Jowy didn't know what to say to that.

He didn't know what to do either after all that Riou had said.

It wasn't that Riou had exaggerated. Jowy believed what Riou had said were not exactly far from truth but... it hurt to be reminded of what he was--

It almost brought back Luca's laughter... taunting, true.

[identity profile] fateisabitch.livejournal.com 2007-04-08 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
First thing Kamui did was jump up, hands letting go as he blushed. "I... I'm sorry." This was akward, but not only because of the position he had been in. He could... feel the tension in the room now, especially between these two, and he wondered to himself if he needed to leave. Maybe they wouldn't want him here, but...

What if they just ended up getting in a fight? What if Jowy was hurt? What if Jowy killed...

No, he wasn't going to think about this now. Or rather, he was going to distract himself, at least for the moment. As brief a moment as it would be. "Are you... okay now, Jowy? Do you hurt anywhere? Can I get you anything?" He lightly touched the other's forehead, as if checking for fever.

[identity profile] for-destiny.livejournal.com 2007-04-08 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
Jowy shook his head and gave Kamui a strained smile. "It's nothing. I'll be fine," he told Kamui sincerely. "You two... brought me back here?"

He gave Riou a silent look and wondered about what drove the other to help him.

[identity profile] for-destiny.livejournal.com 2007-04-08 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
"What were you doing running around in the middle of the forest in the middle of the night, then?" Jowy fired back in a clipped tone.

[identity profile] fateisabitch.livejournal.com 2007-04-08 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
Uh... awkward. The two were kind of sniping at each other, and here Kamui was, just standing around, fidgeting, and trying not to look too uncomfortable. He really should leave?

"Um..." he kinda butted in, feeling bad but at the same time not, "you two aren't about to get into an argument that will lead to a fight of epic and bloody proportions..." Blink, blink; Kamui's eyes wide in a 'I'm not sure how to deal with this' way. "R-right?"

[identity profile] for-destiny.livejournal.com 2007-04-08 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
"You mean we've done the fight of epic and bloody proportions and my army lost," Jowy said nonchalantly before seemingly dropping the topic and turning to Kamui.

"You were still little today, I remember..."

[identity profile] fateisabitch.livejournal.com 2007-04-08 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
At least Kamui was somewhat reassured that the slight arguing wasn't cause for concern, but the comment about him when he was small...

God, how he hated his blush reflex. "N-not talking about that." He plopped down on the bed again, sitting with his back to Jowy and his arms crossed. He was actually pouting a little as well, for added effect. "All of that? Never happened."

[identity profile] for-destiny.livejournal.com 2007-04-08 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
"So Kamui isn't my bride anymore...?" Jowy teased lightly, almost unthinkingly.

[identity profile] fateisabitch.livejournal.com 2007-04-08 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
Damn it, and now he just HAD to bring up the bride thing. "Shut up!" Kamui tried to sound threatening, but with his face now buried in his hand to hide his brightening blush, it just sounded whiny. What the hell was with him and Jowy getting involved in these 'marriage' things anyway?

"I don't like you at all," he whined again, this time on purpose and playfully; shoving Jowy lightly. The mood... could use lightening, even though all those things he had been told were still in the back of his mind. He would ask Jowy about it all later, in private.

For now, he just... didn't want Jowy to be stressed...

[identity profile] for-destiny.livejournal.com 2007-04-08 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
Jowy smiled. "Nobody likes me anymore-" he said jokingly before sighing. "I have some tea, I think--" He purposely avoided looking at Riou as he carefully got on his feet on one side of the bed. Perhaps, Riou had been right and their runes were beginning to act up in their bid to drive its bearer to a long-postponed duel. Though injured, he had bound his wound adequately, and even if the 'ghosts' had become difficult they hadn't tried to hurt him again.
