Edmund is actually at work tonight - he hopes a member of his family might show up, but he's also wondering who else might show up. He's made sure that he's well staffed for the extra crowds and well stocked, no less.

He just hopes nothing gets out of control.

And of course, that a member of his family shows up, looking for him.

[She nods, and accepts it unhesitatingly. She of all people would know the dread mischief that magic can play.]

I think not, but I was told you've done a great deal in watching over my daughter. If you're the same King Edmund the Just of whom I've heard tell.

[He pauses, and then finally nods. Almost no one uses his full title, but then:]

You would, but I won't insist on standing on formality.

[Particularly not from a king. She visibly relaxes, her expression softening.]

This is a strange world; I'm glad to know there's someone to look after her here. Has she been all right? I've looked all over for her, but I was told you might be my best chance of finding her amidst all these people.

I can take you to where she lives, but I think you might be more comfortable at my estate to stay. We can arrange for her to meet you there, if you like.

[POLITE OKAY]

She's well enough, I think. Always picking up things.

She gets that from her father. Though if you've had the occasion to notice, you must spend a great deal of time with her.

I've tried to be there when she's needed help, or simply a friend. I thought it would be important to give her someone of her own rank to spend time with, in case she felt out of place.

We ride together. Once she and I rescued a unicorn together.

I can't imagine she'd ever feel at home in a place like this. Really, it's just horrible, and to think she's been away for so long...

It comes as great comfort to me, to know she's had a friend who could understand her, here.

[And also that apparently she is still capable of being around unicorns, because if not then someone would have to die.]

I try and take care of her. She can be very stubborn, I'm sure you know, but I'll always do what's right if she's in real danger.

[Except from man-eating Clowns, apparently]

She does have other friends, like Count Cain.

If you've managed it so well this far, I'd think you must be rather stubborn yourself.

[Don't think you're off the hook just because she likes you, Ed. NOTHING ESCAPES HER.]

Ah, yes, the one with the letters. I met him yesterday, I believe, since I thought he might know how to find her, as well.

It's part of being a king, I think, the ability to not give up on someone you care about.

She's almost eighteen. Entertaining attentions is one thing, but it's high time she thought seriously about settling down, and there's no sense in spending undue time on a prospect that will never pan out properly.
