So he went upstairs, where Knives was seated and approached him with his head slightly bowed.
"Master," he said. "There are some things I would like to speak with you about. Firstly, about Vash."

"Go on."

"I saw the two of you speaking in the garden the other day. I couldn't shake the feeling that he was about to kill you. What were you talking about?"
He was pretty sure he knew what the answer was going to be, but he asked anyway.

"We were talking about the City, among other things," Knives continued absently, filling in a couple of letters, then changing his mind and erasing them. "It wasn't anything important."

"There's one other thing I would like to know," he began cautiously. "Have you tried opening your Gate?"

And he hated it, of course. What he wouldn't give to have all of his power returned to him... but that cost might be too high for even he. He would have to live with it in the meantime.
"And what about yourself? Your power?"

"It's still there," he said in response to his master's question, "but it can't go farther than about 30 meters. And I can't get as much control over the subject as I'd like. I can move their arms and legs, not much more."
Even though it was just he and Knives there, Legato felt uncomfortable talking about his handicap. It seemed like the walls had ears in the City.
"Well," he started, unfolding his arms and standing straighter, "I guess that is all."
He bowed, turned and began to walk out, then stopped. "Oh, I almost forgot. Should Vash succeed, what of Chapel?"

With Legato leaving, Knives turned his full attention to the puzzle, but at the sound of the other man's voice, he lifted his head. What of Chapel? He was useless without his weapons, but knowing the City, those could be supplied easily enough. The priest was no longer of use to Knives and hadn't moved to attack him yet, but...
"If he attacks you, defend yourself. Otherwise, keep an eye on him, but keep out of any conflicts until I've revived."

Again, he bowed and left. He wondered how long his master would be... asleep if Vash should kill him. The thought of going through the pain of seeing his master brutalized again filled him with dread.
If something were to happen, Legato would be the master of the house until Knives returned. He would need to take care of the plants, and Kururu if need be.
He didn't give it another thought. He had confidence in his master's abilities, even if they were hindered.
