Summary: A cursed Riou tracks down Jowy for a fated duel has been a long time coming.
Log:

Riou waited. He had waited so long. That year long war. Five and half weeks since he arrived in the city. Three weeks of being drained in his foolish battle of wills against his rune. Until today he finally realized the futility of it. It was inevitable. It was fate. It was, in fact, something that he had wanted to do all along. And so finally...

Riou waited for Jowy.

It had been easy enough picking the simple lock to the apartment that Jowy currently shared. Not even the smallest scrap of magic had been levied against the door. Hoi, who had always been breaking into his room back home, had taught him how to undo far more intricate locks(how stupid he had been to be embarrassed back then!) He could have killed the sleeping Jowy then, perhaps, but that would have been so very messy, especially with Lyra and Kamui and their own unknown powers within the same apartment.

He'd known where Jowy had lived from the very beginning, of course. It had been one of the first bits of information he had sought out to learn. For a different reason back then, but still handy now.

And then came luring the puppies out with the scent of meat, stealing Jowy's staff from it's place within the outer rooms-- something that he had seen when he had carried the other wounded boy back from the forest, an opportunity wasted he now realized-- leaving the door slightly ajar as if the dogs had nosed their own way out from a room carelessly left unlocked.

Heh. They would go searching for them but they wouldn't find them. Eventually they would have to search the forests... those oh so dangerous shadowed forests... and Jowy certainly wouldn't allow his dear younger roommates to do that. He'd have to come back to find the staff he had so carelessly misplaced earlier. Said staff now leaned against the chair that Riou lounged upon.

And even if he didn't... Jowy's Black Sword Rune would know he was sure. That Bright Shield was finally laying in wait.

Three weeks ago Jowy had hinted-- no, had all but outright said-- that Jowy should die to reunite the two halves of the Rune of Beginning. Because death was not permanent in this strange city. And Riou had refused to see the plain logic in this, had denied it, and had suffered in silence ever since.

Foolishness...

Absentmindedly Riou brushed a hand across the back of his right glove. For once the Bright Shield Rune was perfectly silent, simply waiting, anticipating. No more draining, their wills were once again in sync. Oh, it had been unhappy enough this morning, but in the end Riou knew what would please his rune. A reunion with their counterpart. So different, irreconcilably different, and yet still with that longing, to be together once again, even if it destroyed them.

It would be so simple if Jowy did indeed let Riou kill him. It would even fulfill the demands of that stupid blood sacrifice that now hung over the city. But-- as Riou had once learned to his grief-- Jowy really couldn't be trusted.

Traitor!

The thought flickered through his mind and Bright Shield gave a single pulse. Riou took a deep breath and the rune quieted once more. He would try the easy way first, but if that failed... Riou smiled at the shadow of the staff that fell across his view. He had other plans for that. No born strategist was he, but for that long year, he'd learned from the best.

No armour today, but a set of clothing so very similar to what he had once worn in Kyaro. His tonfa-- with rage rune inset, where Jowy's staff had none-- lay ready at hand, but out of sight. And a sprinkling of faerie dust given for help freely offered last night to add even a bit more of a surprise. A few weeks ago they had finally started speaking to each other, a few days ago they had finally met almost as if they were once again friends, and now...

Riou waited. It would all be over soon.

There was an uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach and it was complimented by the warm throbbing on his right hand that had been oddly present ever since he woke that morning. Jowy had easily shrugged it off as normal even if the throbbing did make him feel warm all over and reminded him that there was poison still coursing through his veins. More than once, the Black Sword had whispered and reminded him to remember what he stood for that morning but he paid very little attention to that. For one, they had woken to find the door to their apartment open, and the whole place eerily free of the presence of Kamui's dogs. A short search around the apartment told all three inhabitants of apartment #60 that the dogs had disappeared.

And so, they had set out, unaware of the curious changes many of the city's inhabitants had gone through the course of the night. At first, Jowy believed the dogs couldn't have gone far so when he found his staff was missing from its usual resting place (against the wall near the balcony) and a brief search for it yielded nothing, he decided to forgo bringing the staff with him. It didn't occur to him to bring his sword for something so simple as looking for the dogs within the immediate vicinity.

The dogs were still missing after what seemed like several hours of searching. There wasn't a trace of them and it was then that Jowy began suspecting something was wrong. It didn't show on his face. He had carefully put on mask of normalcy. Eventually, he broached up the possibility, however unlikely, that the dogs had gotten lost inside the forest.

"Wait here, I'll go pick up my staff, I think I remember where I put it last now," he'd told them. He gave Kamui a light kiss on the cheek when Lyra wasn't looking and headed back.

Jowy slowed into a jog as soon as he'd arrived on their floor. At that point, he realized, something was definitely amiss, if not horribly wrong. The Black Sword hissed and burned and then was completely silent as soon as he was in front of the door, which was suspiciously left slightly ajar.

The smile disappeared on his face. His eyes narrowed slightly as his face became a unreadable, almost blank. Slowly, he pushed the door open and stepped in. He successfully kept the surprise from leaking out of his mask of indifference, but it was ever present.

"Riou." Wariness. Surprise. Anxiety. Threatened? A cocktail of emotions. Jowy regarded his friend with a neutral look that lasted for a brief moment until he realized it would be wise to play oblivious until he had an idea of what was happening. His face scrunched up in a frown and pushed the door back behind him (making sure it didn't close completely but not making it appear there was conscious effort behind it). "Squirrel boy--" he added quickly, but not quickly enough to warrant suspicion. "Did I forget the lock the door again or did you just break in?" Light hearted voice; check.

He tried not to let his eyes wander, and focused instead on Riou to complete the charade. If there was danger, he would cope and improvise.

Riou couldn't have come--

No, he told himself firmly.

Riou was strong and those dreams held little ground.

Too easygoing and Riou would suspect him, he decided to go for the careful indifference he usually displayed around Riou. Reserve, he told himself. "Not yet but I've enlisted the help of some people for that-" He regarded Riou with an arch eyebrow and just the right amount of dismissal. "What brings you here then, Squirrel boy? Help me look for my staff, while you're at it?"

Chances were, Jowy thought to himself, Riou knew where his staff was already.

Jowy decided he was not going to give Riou the satisfaction of seeing him agreeing to that - not that agreeing to it would make it any true to begin with. It would be uncharacteristic of him to agree to it, and perhaps, much too risky to quip with sarcasm. He settled for denial laced with a sarcasm. "Today's curse is probably something to do with things getting lost. Pets included." Riou was acting himself, for the most part, but perhaps his instincts had been honed by being in Highland, or he'd had to do this so much he knew what to expect. There was something most definitely off with Riou, something perhaps, not even Riou himself realized. Jowy refrained from making hasty judgments, however. He'd let Riou unravel his mask himself.

He sighed slightly, very slightly as if he himself was keeping it to himself, to create an illusion that he was subtly berating himself for becoming forgetful. Jowy knew he really would have told himself that, if not for the unshakable feeling that something was wrong and the Black Sword's fussiness earlier.

He crossed the distance between him and his staff and picked it up. And that was when Riou began again. He turned slightly, and regarded Riou with a very slight frown. "Thinking...?" he asked with a bit of uncertainty.

At that point, Jowy acknowledged the possibility of Riou tiring of the charades and simply revealing his grand plan. Whatever it was.

Electric. There was definitely something there. Being so close to Riou reminded him of what it was like to stand beside Luca Blight, knowing how a single blow from the Mad Prince could fell him. He kept it all in, carefully, and while there was a distance between them, he kept himself close enough to give Riou a sense that he was oblivious.

It was still far enough, he calculated, for him to be able to dodge or protect himself--

It was odd to be thinking like this about Riou, but, it would be foolishness to ignore this now. Especially when it was right in front of him.

"The girl... right?" Jowy said casually. "I've heard, I haven't been paying attention as much as you have though. I don't really believe we're required to do anything."

And Jowy felt it, vaguely, Riou's true intentions. He just couldn't pinpoint it yet...

[identity profile] for-destiny.livejournal.com 2007-04-27 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
That sounded just like what Riou would say normally, but still, Jowy kept his guard up. "You know, if the world ends, it was probably supposed to end like that in the first place," he said calmly. Not quite his exact sentiment - he simply didn't buy it for now and was skeptical - but the answer would serve its purpose.

[identity profile] for-destiny.livejournal.com 2007-04-27 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
There, Jowy was able to tell himself this wasn't the right Riou. The real Riou would have possibly been outraged as his apparent lack of concern and selfishness. This was actually trying to reason.

He began heading for the door in calculated steps. "You do remember, they're mostly all dead-" Jowy began and looked regretful. "-even Pilika..."

If he remembered, Riou believed Jillia had died in his hands. I would not be stretching it to lie to him about Pilika too now. And perhaps then, Riou would show his true colors.

A challenge. "What can you do, Squirrel boy?" he asked in a lighthearted tone even if it was to see if Riou would answer the way Jowy thought he would.

[identity profile] for-destiny.livejournal.com 2007-04-30 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Riou's question spelled everything for Jowy and for a moment, Jowy worried, but he quickly composed himself and turned to the direction of the door. "How about we talk about it while I'm looking for Kamui's dogs at the forest?" he suggested casually, though already he was worried for casualties.

[identity profile] for-destiny.livejournal.com 2007-04-30 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
With a smile visible to Riou, Jowy shook his head. "We weren't able to find them elsewhere, it's only logical to look at every possible place, don't you think?"

While he was able to display confidence, Jowy was already thinking about what to do once they were at the forest and how he would handle, even prevent, the impending duel.

[identity profile] for-destiny.livejournal.com 2007-04-30 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Jowy led the way to the forest, making sure to keep his expressions in check as to not alarm or get Riou suspicious. He didn't need that, especially not anywhere near their apartment or anyone. The less casualties the better, even if he acknowledged, maybe, Riou wasn't too interested in a duel.

Whenever Riou asked or tried to steer the conversation to their runes and destiny, Jowy skillfully diverted the topic to something else. Something more mundane, possibly, all the while acting oblivious to what he thought Riou had planned.

[identity profile] for-destiny.livejournal.com 2007-05-01 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Jowy did not care to look back at Riou as he bravely stepped forward and into the forest, gripping his staff only a bit tighter. "Where do you think could they have gone?" he asked casually.

And at any sign of Riou attacking, Jowy was ready to bolt and buy himself sometime by going well out of the Bright Shield bearer's attack range. He could try talking some sense into him but Jowy doubted his friend's control at this moment. Curses; It must be that!

[identity profile] for-destiny.livejournal.com 2007-05-01 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Aren't we already talking, Riou?" The Black Sword hissed in his hand and he tried to placate it discreetly. I know, I know what he's planning.

He eased his footing, readying to bolt. Could he run all day? Could he knock out Riou in this state?

[identity profile] for-destiny.livejournal.com 2007-05-02 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"So you want to kill me, then, Riou?" Jowy kept his voice cold and neutral. Riou had spelled it out for him, and this could only end one way. Jowy just wished he could stall Riou long enough... "Because you've changed your mind?"
