Summary; Neither of them can swim, but, dammit, they're going to give it a shot anyway.
Log;
It wasn’t too long ago that if someone had told him he’d been going to a beach, with Spikey nonetheless, he’d have told them they’d been hanging around with a certain blue-haired psychopath for far too long. But things changed, thanks to the City and now… Well, it didn’t seem so odd. Maybe that was because of the whole ten plagues of Egypt thing. It almost made everything that had happened back home seem normal.
Still, this was…well, obviously just a little bit weird. Neither of them knew the first thing about swimming, hell they’d joked about it earlier, but Wolfwood had to admit it was making him a bit nervous. He sighed softly, removing his sunglasses and sticking them within the confines of his coat. Well, they wouldn’t know if they even could swim until they tried, right?
“Ya got even the slightest idea how ta do this at all?” He asked, turning around to look at Vash. The largest amount of water he’d ever been in came in the form of a shower, and last he checked, trying to swim in those usually didn’t work too well.
--
"An idea?" Vash echoed. "Yes. Am I sure? No."
Vash knew this was going to be good. It wasn't smart by any means, but it was bound to be entertaining. What was that expression about the blind leading the blind? Vash just hoped it didn't end with both of them drowning.
But it wasn't like the ocean was just a sheer drop or anything. They could work their way in. And that was good, because while Vash was getting more comfortable with some of the people in the City, he was nowhere near ready to let them all see his body. But that was okay! Today it was just him and Wolfwood... And a vast span of water.
"You aren't worried, are you?" he teased, trying his best not to be as amused as he was by his friend's apprehension. "We don't have to go in deep."
--
“Great. I’m givin’ ya a heads up that if we drown, I’m kickin’ yer ass when we wake up.” Then again, there was the possibility that they’d just keep drowning, again, and again, and again… Well, that was a morbid way to look at it.
The look Wolfwood gave Vash screamed that he was far from amused. Him, worry? Why the hell would he do that? He was just…cautious, that was it. They both had had worse ideas, like leaving town to go for a trek in the desert without any water for example, but this didn’t exactly scream smart, either.
“Now why the hell would I do a thing like that?” He grumbled, not half as annoyed as he pretended to be as he set to shedding his jacket. Unlike Vash, he didn’t have half as many layers to shed. He shrugged his jacket from his shoulders and tossed it down on the sand.
--
"Yeah, yeah," Vash said nonchalantly, pulling off his own clothes. "But you know, we're both already dead. I don't think we need to breathe. So as long as we don't try breathing while we're underwater, we should be good, right?"
That was sort of a neat thought... Did that mean he could stay underwater indefinitely? He'd never really stopped to think about it. At any rate, swimming looked like fun, from what he had seen during their first trip to the beach with Nill and Freyjadour and their friends.
"Right!" Vash said, down to his shorts and pumping a fist into the air with enthusiasm, "Let's go and not drown! Because we need to get back and feed Sasha sometime tonight."
--
“Guess so. I ain’t sure how that works ‘round here.” And he wasn’t, really. Knives had done most of the explaining as far as that was concerned and hadn’t exactly been helpful. Then again, expecting him to be useful at all was probably asking too much.
Wolfwood raised an eyebrow at Vash, slightly surprised by just how damn fast he was when it came to getting out of that mess of clothes of his. Then again, he supposed he really shouldn’t be. He’d seen him do more miraculous things than that, but it seemed this was the one guy who never ceased to amaze him.
The rest of his clothing was tossed into a haphazard pile until he was in a similar state of dress as his friend, ruffling a hand through his messy mop of black hair. A soft snort was his only reply to Vash’s comment as he headed into the water, though he did have a point. Somehow he doubted Sasha would appreciate it if they didn’t have a chance to feed her, just because they had both drowned.
--
"See, this isn't so--"
Vash's bright observance was cut off by a misstep which resulted in him falling face-first in the water. He flailed for a while before righting himself and sputtering from his new position on his knees in the water.
"So bad," he finished, clinging to his nose. There was an odd burning sensation there that was making his eyes water. It must have been from taking in water. Whatever it was, it didn't feel good and was giving Vash a good reason not to put his face in the water.
--
Not so bad, huh? Maybe he’d have to agree, on the premise that it had gotten him to laugh. He really was a klutz at the worst possible moment, for him at least. When his laughter had subsided enough that he didn’t think he was going to split his sides, he offered Vash a hand up, smug smirk on his face.
“Ya all right, Spikey?” He was trying not to snicker, really. The fact that he was failing didn’t seem to matter much to him. It wasn’t Vash’s discomfort that he found so funny, just how horrible his timing was when it came to well meant comments, though he didn’t expect Vash to know that. He’d jinxed himself, as far as he was concerned.
“Guess that answers yer question ‘bout breathin’ underwater. I say ya try ta leave that fer the fishes.”
--
Vash rubbed his nose vigorously, trying to make the burning go away, and narrowed his eyes at Wolfwood. Very funny. Then an idea hit him.
"If it weren't for me," Vash said, taking Wolfwood's hand, "You probably wouldn't even know what a fish IS."
With that comment, Vash yanked Wolfwood forward into the water and grinned at him. Surely he couldn't say he didn't see that coming...
--
And he didn’t, at all. His flailing in itself was a sight to behold, and it was hardly a surprise that he ended up falling face first into the water. It was a few moments before he emerged again, soaked and face scrunched up in irritation. Okay, so maybe getting water up your nose hurt a little bit more than he thought.
“What the hell’d ya do that for?” He grumbled, splashing water at him in retaliation. And there would be more where that came from, in the form of dunking if he had a say in it.
--
Vash laughed. A lot. Really, it probably wouldn't have been so funny if Wolfwood didn't act so irritated.
"That's what you get for laughing at people," Vash said, holding up his hands to block the splash from his face with a snicker. "What goes around, comes around. Besides, from here we can probably get a better feel for it."
Vash moved a little to start to go deeper and noticed that the waves would push him back towards the sand before pulling him out towards the water.
Oooh...!
This was certainly a new experience. And it was surprisingly easy to float a little in this water. Vash wondered what made it different from the hot springs. Did its tasting salty have something to do with it? He couldn't remember science class at the moment, so he decided to look it up later.
"Wolfwood, look!" he said gleefully, letting the tide carry him a little more, "It takes you by itself! It's like floating on a breeze or something!"
--
“I didn’t pull ya in! You gettin’ wet was yer own fault!” He objected with a scowl, tempted to splash him again but Vash had already begun moving farther into the water. Definitely not worth it, especially when he could get him back later, once his guard was down.
Wolfwood followed after Vash, more hesitant about where he stepped. The pull of water heading back out to sea only for another wave to come in felt a little weird, but hey, at least they weren’t big enough to push him around. He stopped when the water reached his chest, reluctant to go any further.
A soft smile spread over his face as he watched Vash float a little farther away, brushing wet, black bangs from his eyes. “Nice job, Spikey. Never knew ya could float in water.”
--
"It's a good thing I can," Vash said, rather enjoying the feeling of drifting. "Otherwise I'd be in trouble about now. You should try it; it's not that bad, really."
Vash experimented a little with using his arms and legs to move around in the water. This was turning out to be easier than he thought it would be... Until he lost any contact with the ground and sort of floundered for a while before getting back on his feet. Right, so, a little more caution would probably be a good idea...
--
Wolfwood gave him a skeptical look, glancing at the water. Well, fine. What was the worst that could happen, anyway? He lay back on the water, relaxing when he didn’t sink back into the water but remained afloat. “Yer right, it does feel like a breeze is pushin’ ya ‘round!”
He didn’t laugh this time at Vash’s flailing, just smirked. Really, the guy was such a spaz when he wanted to be. “Real smooth o’ ya, Spikey. Ya looked like a fish floppin’ around on a beach.” He teased, the smirk still firmly in place as he looked away from his friend, and up at the sky. The thought of possibly falling asleep like this came to mind, but he was sure that wouldn’t end well on his part.
--
"Just don't float out to sea," Vash remarked, looking out towards the ocean. There really was a lot of water... He was suddenly feeling very small. But it was a nice sort of feeling. Vash liked to be reminded that the world was bigger than his problems.
All right, it was time to try something new. Vash took a deep breath (only realizing later that he really didn't have to) and slipped beneath the waves. Once he was underwater, he opened his eyes and looked around. No water went up his nose this time, and he found that he rather liked this. Sounds were both muffled and amplified at once, giving the atmosphere a rather dream-like quality.
Vash wondered how long he could stay under before giving Wolfwood a heart attack, but decided against finding out and stood back up, wiping the water from his eyes.
"You should try that!" he exclaimed. "It's like a whole different world under there!"
--
Wolfwood paid no mind to his warning, only giving him the usual ‘I-can-take-care-of-myself-so-don’t-lecture-me’ look, because really, he was an adult. Well, kinda. The technicalities didn’t matter so much.
He glanced out of the corner of his eye at Spikey, watchful to make sure he didn’t end up drowning somehow. The last thing he needed was to drag him back to shore and attempt CPR. Not that he actually knew CPR, mind you, but that was just another one of those technicalities he’d mentioned before. He sighed, deciding to take his own advice for a change and not worry so much, relaxing with a lazy smile on his face as he continued to float, the waves making him bob in the water. Shame his cigarettes were back on shore.
The priest looked up when Vash appeared once again, eyebrow raised as he watched Spikey’s hair become not so spikey after being soaked in sea water. “I think I’ll pass.” He called with a lazy smirk, not too sure he wanted to risk getting water up his nose again. Besides, he’d had his fun of being underwater when Vash had pulled him down with him.
--
Vash looked back towards the shore and contemplated in silence for a while. They were within eyesight of where he had fought with Knives, though you wouldn't know it by looking anymore. The ocean had gently washed away any and all traces of their battles and left the sand looking just as though no one had ever been there.
Hmm. The ocean made a poignant metaphor. Vash wondered if things would have been better on Gunsmoke if there had been an ocean. Probably not, but who could say? Since they'd never know, wondering couldn't hurt. He looked back at Wolfwood's floating form and a chain of wicked pranks ran through his head. The only question was whether or not he was cruel enough to follow through with any of them.
--
When no reply was forth coming, he looked up a bit to see Vash staring off at the beach. He followed his line of sight and came to rest on that spot. That was something he had little desire to think about, even if the blood was long since washed away. It might as well had still been there and pulled his eyes away from the shore, his eyes closing. Maybe he should take up that nap idea.
--
Gah, why did he have to make it so much more tempting?! Vash crouched down in the water so that his head was the only thing exposed and circled around Wolfwood like a hungry shark. The possibilities were so limitless that Vash almost didn't know what to do with himself. Dunking him was just too mean. If he did that, he had a feeling that Wolfwood would never speak to him again.
But he had to do something!
Finally unable to resist the childish longing any longer, Vash slipped underwater and pinched Wolfwood's back.
--
Wolfwood’s eyes shot open wide, his first reaction to yelp—something he would later deny doing—and jump away from whatever the hell had done that to him. He was standing up now, looking at the water as if it had just done something to offend him when it was just the idiot lurking somewhere beneath the waves.
When he finally came back up for air, he was greeted with another splash of water on his part and an annoyed glare. “Ya gotta thing fer messin’ with me or somethin’?” He asked with a scowl, though really, he knew the answer to that question already.
--
Vash snickered wickedly and moved to a safer distance away from Wolfwood.
"It was just so perfect!" he said in an attempt to defend himself. "You would have done the same thing to me! At least I didn't push you underwater like I first considered! You know, you should really thank me for having such a charitable spirit."
--
“Charitable spirit, my ass!” And off he went, trudging through the water after him with the intent of revenge. “An’ yer really not helpin’ yer case at all.” He pointed out as he lunged at him, attempting to catch him in a headlock. Not to do any real damage, more like mess up that damn black hair of his. That should be pay back enough, as far as he was concerned.
--
"Guh!" was Vash's initial reply as Wolfwood grabbed him. "Hey, can't we talk this-- OW! This is abuse! I'm calling for help! HEY! SOMEBODY HELP!! I'M BEING ABUSED!"
It was becoming increasingly hard to keep from laughing, and Vash was already losing that battle.
"I am going to sue!" he yelled right before dissolving into giggles.
--
A smile spread over his lips, contagious as ever as his rough fingers made a mess of Vash’s hair further before he was satisfied with his handy work and released him from his hold. Yup, now that look suited him well.
“You started it, Spikey. I was just finishin’ it.” He grinned at him, splashing at him once again but this time not out of irritation. Hearing him laugh always managed to put him in a good mood, no matter what was wrong. It was a shame he didn’t hear it more often.
--
"Tch, so much for all that 'turn the other cheek' stuff," Vash said with false distaste, regaining his composure. "You're the same as always; mean." A smile played about his lips as he said this. He liked the fact that Wolfwood was the same as he always had been. Nothing had changed about him, really.
--
His grin fell a bit at the latter of his comments, smile still there but not nearly as full fledged. “Hey, I gotta be ta keep up with a guy who sneaks up an’ pinches my back fer the hell o’ it.” Wolfwood mused, running his hand through his soaked black hair as he glanced at Spikey. “What do ya say we head back, huh? ‘Fore ya start getting’ sun burnt an’ I have ta explain why ya match the color o’ yer coat.”
--
"Okay," Vash said brightly. "And hey, now we can cross some things off of that to-do list!"
--
Ah, that. With all the swimming and general harassing the two had done today, he’d nearly forgotten. He smirked a bit as he headed back to the shore. “Yeah, the not drownin’, fer starters.”
--
"Now we just need to go grocery shopping and buy alcohol," Vash said, heading for the shore. "But first we better go feed Sasha. She's probably howling at the door right now."
--
“Probably more than that, knowin’ her.” He could picture her tearing up the apartment in search of food, as they spoke. Wolfwood changed relatively quickly, brushing the sand off his clothing as he looked over the water one last time for the day. It had been fun, really, but he still had a feeling he wasn’t meant for swimming.
