Summary; A little one-sided family reunion.
Log;
Elaine had just stepped out from Cybernetics feeling pretty tired. Adam didn't say when he'd talk to his apartment-mates when she could stay with them temporarily, and DS did say she could move into any one of the empty rooms in the apartment buildings, so she started to move towards the building behind where she came from. She thinks she'll do fine living alone. Again, she tried sensing for Lucifer's presence in the city. But after a few seconds she just gave up with a sigh. She was too tired to try to search for his aura now.
Lucifer walked away from the circus where he first found himself. Away from the distraction of lights and sounds that overwhelm the senses, and the 'residents' that had felt compelled to introduce themselves. Lucifer attempted to sense for the presence of anyone familiar, be it friend or foe. He knew how to get information out of either. He found a faint connection and followed it until his steps took him out of the dark caverns and into the outskirts of the city.
Going at it randomly, she picked the apartment block to the left of what was behind the computer place where she came from. She was just about to actually enter the building when she sensed a familiar presence suddenly surface in her consciousness.
"Lucifer!" she exclaimed to herself. She looked around, trying to see where he could have suddenly popped out from.
Lucifer was about to turn a corner when he heard his name spoken. He paid it no heed at first thinking it perhaps another case of mistaken identity. But the presence he was following felt stronger, as if the voice that called his name made the connection stronger. He glanced towards the direction of the stranger, and he did find a familiar face.
"It's been a while Elaine Belloc."
Yup, it's definitely him, she thought to herself as she walked to the alleyway between the two buildings where he suddenly emerged. But she was glad to see him, though the first words out of her mouth were "Well I was definitely not expecting you to be here. The last time I sensed you, you suddenly disappeared."
This is unexpected, Lucifer thought. Is this the after-effect of being outside of the plan? Within the constraints of his father's Creation, the rules of the universe are predictable -- almost boring -- the result of his Yahweh's preference for predestination that was grandly referred to as The Plan. Lucifer, having moved outside of it, had no choice but to look at everything in a new light. Yet he knew perfectly well how he wound up there. His thirst for knowledge of ways to free himself from the bindings of fate led him to the city. He, however, doubted that mere curiosity pulled Elaine Belloc away from her Creation and into this one.
"Shouldn't you be back 'home' babysitting or doing whatever it is that gods do?" Lucifer asked. Lucifer lived on the principle of traveling light. And this is excess baggage he did not anticipate. Still, Elaine had been useful in the past. He might find use for her again.
Elaine sighed. Was there no getting to him at all? "The last thing I remember was me merging with everything. And the next thing I knew, I was here." She gestured to the city. "My powers are diminished, there are a lot of people from different realms and dimensions... it's all very confusing." She breathed out, letting go some of the tension in her body as well. Now that she's seen him at least she can breathe a little easier.
Lucifer's got to hand it to her though, Elaine's a quick study. Both of them have arrived at the same conclusions regarding the how, what, and where things stand at the moment. Perhaps her more 'open' approach to the inhabitants of the city would serve him better with regards to information that he needs.
"And if I were to trust the hints of those I have talked to, leaving this place is a much more involved process than the entry."
She nodded in agreement. The city did seem to offer virtually no easy avenues of exit from it, but it was something that she didn't really concern herself about right now. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it, she told herself. "Hey, do you mind if we continue this conversation from up there?" She pointed to the top of the apartment block. "I could definitely use the cold breeze right about now" And, without waiting for his reply, she manifested her wings and flew to the top of the building, setting her feet down gingerly on the concrete. "Come on up, the wind feels nice!" She called down to him.
With a beat of his wings, Lucifer followed Elaine to the top of the building. It was a good choice. Above ground at least, he was able to survey more of the city's landscapes. He took note of the buildings (especially the tallest one slightly to his right), and guessed at the purpose of some, though the others' function (like the cathedral and the academy) seemed obvious.
From this vantage point, Lucifer indulgently took out his pack of cigarettes and lit up. Funny, to think that it was something he kept from before he chose to make his crossing into the void. Well, he didn't exactly mean to save it as a memento. It's more likely that he simply forgot about it, and having the leisure now, found it again. Not unlike the scar that he wears. That, is a reminder that he chose to keep.
"What do you intend to do now, Elaine Belloc?" He asked.
"Well, I'll think on trying ways to find a way out, but I'll be keeping that on the back burner." She sat at the edge of the building, swinging her legs out. Despite everything that she's heard and read in the network so far, she was actually looking forward to spending time living and mingling here. She remembered Adam's reply to her, that no one minded his identity as the Anti-Christ, something that surely would've set him apart and alienated him were he back on Earth. She will not admit it, she wasn't even the Creator for that long a time, but she did miss being an ordinary kid. Well, not exactly a kid anymore, but the feeling of not being responsible for anything and everything as big as, well, Creation itself. "I've already corresponded with some interesting people online today. Among them the Anti-Christ, and the alternate universe versions of yourself and father. Though with father, not much"
"We've met. Briefly." Lucifer said as he flicked the ash off his cigarette. "And while you're here busy meeting the natives, who's minding the business back at your Creation?" He asked Elaine. Not that he cared about how she ran logistics of running a creation, or three. But he can't help drawing parallelisms between Elaine's predicament now of having left her cosmos to fend for itself, with his father's abandonment.
Ugh. He just had to bring that up. "Well, the last time we met you said that I could assign "subordinates", didn't you? I needed a bit of help when I started, so I asked Duma if he could be my right hand for a while. Provided, he wasn't too keen on the idea himself, but I assured him that it would be only until I was confident enough to handle it on my own, or at least find someone else." She sighed. "I would've liked for Mazikeen to help me, but she clearly didn't like the idea, despite having your Lightbringer powers and all" She trusted Duma now, and knew that everything would be fine under his command. But him bringing that up made her uneasy. Maybe she wouldn't put the searching for a way out on the back burner after all. "Also, an alternate angel, Alexiel, warned me about divulging my identity to her twin, Rosiel. That Rosiel... seems mad. Terribly so." And another. "I've also corresponded with someone from the Dreaming. A nightmare, the Corinthian."
Lucifer refrained from commenting on Elaine's choice of helpers. It was her choice and her creation after all. It would be HER mistakes as well. Lucifer did briefly thought of Mazikeen, and if she'd made use of new status as Lightbringer. His fingers involuntarily reached for his face, tracing memories that had been left there.
"That angel I've met. She made no mention of a twin." He said.
Was the omission deliberate? Lucifer thought. Whatever the reason, he had already made up his mind to be wary at least of the inhabitants of the city. Elaine's warning simply corroborates this need. At her mention of the nightmare, Lucifer reminded himself that he should make a point to get in touch with Morpheus, if he really was in the city. Is he a prisoner same as they are? Or is this where people who retire from Fate eventually end up?
She saw him reach up for the scar on his face, something that she saw earlier but did not want to remark on. Mazikeen probably did that to him, She thought. I wonder if he misses her. "In any case, I think we have to be careful about not divulging our identities to anyone here, except to those who know who we are already. Who knows what other forms of ourselves are lurking here and there." It was the last thing she wanted, really. She again remembered what Adam had mentioned before, but she was just new here, and didn't know the threat posed by those dangerous enough to do her harm. It was ridiculous when she thought about it; she was the all-powerful Creator, maker of worlds. But in this place her powers were somewhat lessened, and she was new to the God business. Despite everything she had already learned, she still had a long way to go.
"Indeed." Lucifer said as he put out the cigarette with the heel of his boot. Taking caution is practical at this point. Now that they had dispensed with the pleasantries such meetings entail, Lucifer let himself relax, if only a little.
"I wonder if this city has a decent piano bar." He said almost to himself.
Her look changed from one of wonder to incredulous. But then again, trust Lucifer to escape to his more familiar settings. "If this place has a computer shop and coffee shop, I don't think it wouldn't have a nightclub as well." "Wait a minute... you've spoken to Alexiel?"
"Alexiel had said that I have been here before. Or perhaps an image of me." Lucifer tapped his fingers on the ledge.
Revisiting his conversation with that fallen angel made him think of some of the questions he still need an answer to. His supposed previous appearance was one of them. The presence of alternates of himself and his brothers were another. And ultimately he needed to find a way out, something that might not be as simple as bargaining for another letter of passage, because for one, he did not know whom to bargain with.
Well, that was something new. But if he didn't remember being here at all, who was his precursor here? This city just keeps getting weirder and weirder by the minute. "Oh, and where did you come from? When I first arrived here I sensed your presence, but very, very faintly. Is there an underground section to this city?"
"Equilibrium is the key of all creations. Everything created has an opposite. For creation made above ground, there are those who chose to reside beneath it. This city is no exception." Though, the city was exceptional in other things, if what he'd seen so far was any indication. And biased though his judgment may sometimes be, his senses are only occasionally not in the right.
And now he's sounding like one of the teachers from her old school. "Well, see anything interesting down there that warranted you remaining there for some time?"
"The gods of this city -- have you seen or sensed any since you arrived?" Lucifer replied.
"I asked you first." Elaine countered. Paused, then sighed. "No. I have heard that there are, but haven't sensed them. Yet, I'm assuming." She'll let the underground question drop. She was too tired to try and pry more information out of him, something that he was easily doing with her. Only that he wasn't really prying, she was giving him the information. She stood up from where she was sitting and stretched both her arms over her head. "Well, amazingly enough, I'm tired and sleepy. Things that I haven't felt in a very long time. I'll be staying in... this building, Lucifer. Where will you be headed?"
Lucifer kept himself from smirking at Elaine's childish outburst. Her frustration at his reticence was nothing new. There is still remained the question of where he was going to stay. Though he really did not require a home, a place to consider as a base of operations, for lack of a better term, would be necessary at some point. For the moment, however, he paid it no mind. Besides, he felt that the city showed more of its true self in the darkness of night. And if he wanted to find out more about the city and its inhabitants, now would be the time.
"To get a drink." Lucifer said finally as he made a move towards the exit leading to the stairs.
And there he goes again. At least this time she was sure he wasn't going anywhere further than the next piano bar somewhere around. She knew that asking him to at least look for a place to stay before he goes wandering off wasn't going to work, so she just looked at him as he walked towards the stairway door. She found herself glancing at the remains of the cigarette that he crushed beneath his heel. She called out to him just as he opened the door. "Hey... Uncle?"
Lucifer had thought to make his exit before Elaine asked anymore questions. But Elaine did have a way of making sure she doesn't get completely ignored. Lucifer stopped in his tracks but didn't look back. This time, he'd let it pass. Uncle, huh?
"Hn?"
Ugh. Why did she go and call him Uncle, again? "Just... don't go disappearing like the last time. And keep in touch, okay? Even if we're in just one city."
"You're the Creator. It's not my job to keep tabs on everyone." And with that, Lucifer descended and went out of Elaine's sight.
