Summary: Two vampire hunters, a crypt, and a conversation.
Log:

The City was relatively quiet again with the passing of the latest curse. D had found the chaos of the preceeding day onerous, to say the least. First had come the parasite's incessant rambling and repeated attempts to do things he was Not Allowed to Do, and then the matter with Doris trying to get as far from D as possible, followed by the matter of what was happening to the younger version of his father.

The parasite was behaving itself now, but D knew it was only a matter of time before the creature found a new avenue for its enjoyment. As he waited at the crypt in Xanadu, he hoped that the meeting with Julius Belmont would not provide that avenue.

"Fitting choice, considering the profession," Julius said as he walked between the graves.

"Neutral territory," D said simply. He was little more than a shadow amongst the tombs, his silhouette made indistinct by the dark fall of his cloak. Despite the darkness, he had no difficulty following Julius' approach.

"Fair enough," Julius said, stopping and taking a seat on a gravestone. "So, what can I tell you that you want to know?"

"I want to know if you get paid," said a rough voice from the vicinity of D's left hand. The hunter clenched his fist, ignoring the strangled noises his partner made. He didn't relax his hand until the creature had fallen silent.

"What are you willing to speak about?" D asked, as though the parasite had not interrupted. "Your methods? The nature of the vampires you fight? Your allies?"

"When I do jobs for the Vatican, they pay me," Julius said. "And I have on a few occasions, been contacted by private individuals." He rested an ankle on his knee.

"My methods are physical combat. The whip is the primary weapon, but I have a number of other weapons at my disposal, as relying on only one weapon is generally a very bad idea."

"What form do these weapons take?" Although the most evident part of D's armament was the sword strapped to his back, he carried other weapons with him as well, most often wooden stakes. The parasite was a weapon, of a sort, as was D's very nature. Human vampire hunters were rare in D's time, and human vampire hunters who could survive an encounter with any vampire of note still rarer.

"Silver knives, bottles of holy water, crucifixes, copies of certain bible verses. A throwing axe or two," Julius said. "A few other things I'd rather keep secret for now."

"Sounds pretty standard, doesn't it D?" the parasite remarked. "Except the crucifix and bible bit."

"Well, they aren't used very conventionally," Julius said.

D inclined his head a fraction in acknowledgement. "I imagine not, but what the parasite means is that there are no hunters who use them where we come from. The efficacy of most holy objects against vampires was systematically wiped from the human consciousness over the millennia."

"That is to say, the vampires won?"

"For a time. Their kingdom began to decline, and the humans fought back." D shrugged. "It was inevitable, according to their own scientists, but many of them refuse to accept what even their Sacred Ancestor proclaimed as truth." For a moment, he wore what might have been a tired smile. "They're a stubborn species."

"I noticed. We were killing the same person for half a century," Julius responded. "In response to one of your earlier questions about the types of vampires I fight, that depends. There are simple, new vampires, then there are vampires that have acquired vast reserves of power through one method or another."

"Who? Dracula?" interjected Left Hand. "He always comes back. It's aggravating."

Once again, D ignored him. "If a vampire from your world were to arrive here, how much of a problem do you think they'd represent?"

"Depends on the vampire," Julius said. "But I can name a few names that would be cause for worry."

"And those would be?"

"Dracula, Carmilla, Orlox, Elizabeth Bartley, and Count Brauner. Although those are just the vampire threats," added as an afterthough.

"If they all show up at once, I quit," muttered the parasite. "No offense, D, but you and the rest of the vampire hunters with their own two legs can take care of them."

"Then there's Death," Julius continued, ignoring the hand. "If he shows up, then we have a big problem."

D raised an eyebrow. "Howso?"

"The first is a very simple reason: Death is overwhelmingly powerful. The second is that if he appears, his master is likely to be close behind him."

"Dracula."

Julius reached into his pocket and pulled out a pipe and a small knife. "Dracula. And with him comes something far, far worse."

"Worse than Dracula?" The parasite sounded less than thrilled.
