There was a small bounce to Kisame's step as he approached the Pandora restaurant where Aizen claimed to be dining. It really had been too long since he had killed someone. The opportunity to put his sword to use against such an arrogant sack of refuse was just too delightful to turn down. Itachi-san wouldn't mind. After all, Aizen might be an ally (for now), but that didn't mean he had to be a living one.

He made sure to take the route where he could approach the bastard from behind. Seeing him now, that pretentious lift of his spine, a ridiculous parasol shading the back of his head, was enough to make a man break out a deadly water jutsu then and there. Good thing for Aizen, Kisame had manners.

"Hey, ugly! Did you order my tea?"

Aizen opened his eyes slightly where he was reclining and motioned to the other side of the table, where a steaming glass of tea was waiting.

"Do keep your voice down in public, will you? You're showing a distinct lack of class and bearing," he said, taking a sip of his own cup, "You can have a scone as well, if you like."

"Why? Afraid someone might overhear? You do seem to be the sneaky sort."

Kisame slammed a fistful of tree leaves down on the table. "Itachi-san said people here will accept anything as money. So there is my payment. As for your scone ... I like to avoid food I've never heard of before."

He dragged back the chair directly in front of Aizen and sat, ensuring that he made a show of setting his sword down at his side. A nice intimidation tactic.

"Any dango in this godforsaken place?"

The tall man smiled at the show of bravado, watching the table shake with Kisame's exertion. He steadied his tea to keep it from spilling, then was suddenly out of his seat and behind Kisame.

"Sorry, they don't serve such food here. Go to a japanese restaurant. They seem to have food analogous to what people on your world eat," he said, running a hand along the blade, "This is an intriguing weapon. I would almost think it has an energy all it's own."

Kisame's heart jumped at seeing how fast the man went from sitting to standing behind him, causing his blood to stir. Perhaps this guy would make a worthy opponent after all.

He smiled at the backhanded compliment. "Of course, there are many secrets to Samehada, and some, not so secret. You will notice that she is different than any other blade you might have handled. Rather than steel, she is made up of tiny blades beneath her wrapping. Perhaps you would like a demonstration of how they work?"

"Hmm...Certainly. I appreciate new and interesting things," he said, leaving some money on the table and walking off. He strolled to the fountain at the center of the city and awaited his guest.

"Proceed."

He didn't know whether to feel haughty or suspicious that Aizen chose to stage their battle near the fountain. Did he assume, perhaps, that all Mist nin needed a source of water to perform their jutsus? Was this his way of telling Kisame that he was not afraid?

"Interesting choice of locale. However—" he rose one hand high in the air, the other near his lips, "I think it is time for a change of scenery. Kirigakure no Jutsu."

It did not take long for the Mist to roll in, blanketing the area in dense fog that was sure to bewilder the senses of even the strongest shinobi.

Aizen calmly assessed the situation, extending a light field of his reiatsu around himself in every direction.

"Oh. How very picturesque," he stated simply, a small smirk on his face, "I had no idea that you could create such lovely scenery."

He crossed his arms and waited.

The grin was not long in coming to Kisame's lips. Ah, so this one was immune to the more subtle effects of water. This would be fun. Perhaps a more palpable method would best serve.

"Mizu bunshin no jutsu." The three water clones that stepped out of the fountain after his words may only have had a tenth of Kisame's power, but that was all right. He sent them rushing toward Aizen anyway, swords at the ready, simply to see how this man fought.

Aizen stood in place, awaiting the approach of the false shinobis. He raised one arm and blocked the first swing with his forearm, eyes impassionately watching the other clones.

"Must we do this?" he yawned, "It's so strenuous and I just had my afternoon tea."

"My bad, my bad. I wouldn't want your tea to end up all over my beautiful clones. Some people just aren't used to the physical exertion required to lift a finger."

Kisame watched the other two water clones dive for Aizen while the third was being blocked.

Wait for it ... wait ...

Aizen moved the blade of the one clone and used it to block the other two attacks. He followed it up by moving into a complex dance of parries and redirections, trying to direct the clones' blades into one another's bodies.

"I wonder. Do all small dogs bark so loudly, while having so little bite? I would suggest you run back into the doghouse, lest you be disciplined by unruly wolves."

The moment the three clones thrust their swords into one another, they burst upon impact into millions of water droplets. In that moment, Kisame made his move.

I am a shark in the sea, he told himself as he closed in and raised his sword.

And you, bastard, are my prey.

He brought Samehada down towards Aizen's face with a force not found in normal men.

With deceptive ease, Aizen brought his hand up, his reiatsu countering the force as he stopped the massive blade with his bare hand and closed his fingers around it.

"Hmm...Apparently your blade has more bite than just what's obvious. It's like it's trying to pull my energy away from me. I'm afraid I may have more than it can chew," he stated, looking Kisame in the eyes, "Is this it?"

This would normally be the point where Kisame would start to gloat about how Samehada does not cut, but shaves chakra from an opponent until there is nothing left to absorb.

Enough even to absorb the energy of a nine-tailed fox.

What sort of demon was this man? Was this why Itachi-san was so enamored with the fellow?

At the thought, Kisame snarled and ripped his sword back from Aizen's grip. "No, that's not it."

"Then do impress me. Your partner was much more impressive."

Aizen stepped back, folding his arms once more.

"I'm not some witless child with a beast inside him, so please try a bit harder."

Kisame gritted his teeth. Damned, impossible man. If the shark made a move now, it would seem as though he were following orders.

But if he didn't, it would seem even worse.

There was a damn good reason Itachi-san chose to stay with him instead of breaking off and partnering with this arrogant sod.

With that in mind, Kisame threw Samehada into the air and watched as her bindings came undone during her ascent.

"Suiton bakushouha!"

He sucked in air and breathed water out on the exhale. How would the bastard respond to the onslaught of a tsunami coming at his pretty little face?

Aizen blinked in surprise, his body blown back by the deluge of water. He was forced a good distance back, his feet leaving deep trails in the earth.

"Hm," he hummed as the water dripped down his body. No visible damage seemed to be on him.

"Another interesting parlor trick. I suppose you are a water specialist?" he said, extending a hand, "Good to know. Do bear with me and try not to die."

He mumbled something under his breath and flexed his open hand, releasing a lightning based kido which arc through the air toward Kisame.

In disgust, Kisame snatched Samehada from where it had fallen at his feet.

Sometimes his enemies' necks snapped like toothpicks when tons upon tons of water hailed down upon them. Those were usually the ones who made assumptions about the strength of water itself, often spouting smart phrases like "What are you going to do, rain on me?" before Kisame ushered them toward their doom, obviously forgetting how heavy one gallon of water truly was. Some enemies dodged, others drowned, and more still disappeared, never to be found again.

Few took the impact and lived.

Something akin to doubt surfaced in Kisame's mind when he saw Aizen still standing, the only thing affected being his ridiculous outfit, now soaked through.

His eyes widened when Aizen reached an arm out. Nothing good ever came out of that stance. He had just enough time to turn Samehada sideways against his body when he heard the incantation.

The impact sent him flying hundreds of yards in the air, finally landing head first into the leftover water of the tsunami.

Samehada had taken the brunt of the lightening attack, but there was a moment of darkness in Kisame's mind before he found himself again beneath the waves.

The waters parted as Aizen walked toward Kisame, repelled by his reiatsu. He expanded it outward, pushing the liquid farther and farther away from his body. His arm raised again as he advanced.

"Will you yield? Have you had enough yet?" he smirked, casually stepping toward his prey, "This can all stop."

Aizen came to halt several meters from Kisame's position, looking down at him.

"Had enough of my abuse, eh?" Kisame said, rising from the waves until he was standing atop it, his chakra concentrated at his feet.

He cocked his head, considering the man in a new light. If he had come to a draw with Itachi-san....

"How about you tell me something I want to know?"

"Certainly," Aizen replied, holding his reiatsu as it was, "I am not adverse to questions. Ask it."

His hand lowered as he focused his ears on Kisame's question.

Kisame considered the man with a measure of distrust before proceeding on. This had to be done.

"I want you to tell me how you came back to life." He quelled a flash of fury that rose from his gut to his throat, threatening to choke him.

"Then I want to know why you haven't shared your secrets with Itachi-san."

"Simple," he said, cocking his head to the side and looking up at him, "He never asked. I was never under any contract to help him. We share information related to our targets. That is all."

He smiled up at the man, smiling, "He never even came to me."

Sometimes Kisame regretted acting on impulse. It wasn't one of his better habits, and it had gotten him in trouble on numerous occasions.

This was one of those times.

He mumbled into the too-large Akatsuki collar, "Well, erm ... Itachi-san does have an unfortunate overabundance of pride...."

He made himself look into those eyes, arrogant or no. "Does this mean you wouldn't be adverse to sharing?"

Aizen swept his hair back and sighed, holding fingers to his forehead.

"You don't get it, do you? It wouldn't do any good. The price is DIFFERENT for everyone. Only the gods know what they want. For me, they wanted zanpakutous of my enemies and blood. For Itachi, it would be different. Everyone is different, depending on what the gods want them to get. It will more than likely be something difficult."

"Do you understand?"
