Log;

Kensei gently closed his laptop and took a deep breath, trying to calm himself.  He was furious with her and at himself.  At Hiyori for being to damn stubborn about it all and at himself for letting it get to this point.  Whatever had upset her so much he was definitely a cause - if not the cause of it.  He knew he had screwed up lately, a lot, but he wanted to at least have the chance to make it right.

He knew he could never make everything right and perfect, but at least he could keep from making the same mistake again.  And Hiyori was always doing this, pushing people away at the slightest excuse.  Well, Kensei was sick and tired of it.  He was going to make her talk to him and open up if it was the last thing he did.  Which, knowing how violent Hiyori could be, it probably would be the last thing he did.

Kensei sighed and snatched up his zanpakutou.  Most of the other vaizards rarely even bothered with them, but Kensei still preferred to incorporate it, along with hand to hand combat.  He liked getting up close and personal with his opponents.  Besides, old habits died hard.  As much as they had all trained, Kensei had been a shinigami longer than he had a vaizard.

Kensei jogged out of the apartment and headed towards where he had felt Hiyori's reiatsu flaring up, praying that she wasn't near anyone.  He didn't want any innocent people hurt because she was mad at him.  Hell, he didn't want to be hurt because she was going to be mad at him, but there wasn't much to be done about that.  Hiyori would not hold back on his account, and even if Kensei did go all out, he was no match for the shorter girl.

Using Flash Steps, Kensei was in the same area as his friend in no time.  He was gradually turning up his reiatsu as he came, wanting to give her fair warning that he was coming.

"Alright!" Kensei shouted, turning around as he tried to pinpoint the girl's position.  "Come out so we can get this over with.  I have a lot of sense to beat into you!"

Hiyori didn't want to fight Kensei. She really didn't. In fact, if she were anywhere near normal, perhaps she would have realized that rather than feeling angry, most of the emotions writhing in her small frame were more along the lines of hurt and frustration than anything else, but Sarugaki Hiyori didn't do hurt--unless by hurt you meant her fist punching someone else's face in.

Being in Hollow form made things a little more difficult, of course--whereas normally Hiyori probably simply would have bolted to the next inaccessible area, the Hollow in her flat-out refused to. Although it was worth noting that the real Hiyori wasn't putting up that much of a fight anyway.

"Clearly, the one without sense here is you," Hiyori breathed, immediately rising in elevation and sending a whirlwind of a cero at her comrade.

Emotions were truly dangerous things.

Hiyori immediately deflected the blast with a bit of strengthened hiero in her forearm, then flashed to a different location, behind Kensei. The blast had been pathetically weak by Kensei's standards, and Hiyori was fairly certain that even if the blast had hit, nothing much would have happened.

Which meant that either Kensei was still weak after helping the shinigami, or he was just playing with her.

Neither reason was satisfying, and both ended up simply fueling the vaizored's anger.

"Ya know what?" she asked, voice cold and layered with the Hollow within her. "I've always hated that 'bout ya, Kensei. Always puttin' the needs of others in front of ev'rythin' else. Might as well have stayed in Soul Society, doncha think?"

Aware that her cero were probably too slow to catch Kensei, Hiyori began releasing a set of smaller bala blasts in his general direction before flashing away once more, high in the sky.

At his words, Hiyori barked with laughter, sounding far more crazed than sane as her reiatsu flared yet again, glowing with intensity. "Putting me first, Kensei? That's real fuckin' news t'me!"

She paused to throw a few more curving blasts just to keep him on his toes.

"Why doncha just come out with it, Kensei? YA WANNA BE ONE OF 'EM AGAIN. Ya ain't willin' t'deal with the fact that we're a lil MESSED IN THE HEAD, that bein' a vaizored means that you will OCCASIONALLY BE SEEN AS THE BAD GUY. So ya chase after 'em with a tail between yer legs, 'cause there really ain't much else there."

Although her reiatsu was undoubtedly rising in power, anger was clouding her vision, making her see red. Her attacks were more haphazard now, a few bala completely missing their target and hitting some nearby foilage instead.

"So FUCK puttin' me first, 'cause YA DON'T. If ya did, ya wouldn't be HIDIN' SO MUCH SHIT from me, ya wouldn't be LEAVIN' ME ALONE IN THAT GODFORSAKEN APARTMENT. FUCK THAT. YOU AND BALDY BOTH. I'm THROUGH."

She only hesitated for a fraction of a second, but it was enough. The retort she had in store for Kensei was all thought-out and ready, hanging on the tip of her tongue as she then felt a sudden impact on her sternum, knocking the wind right out of her as she coughed, spraying blood in the air.

"FUCK," she snarled, immediately flashing away before his arms could completely wrap around her waist and falling to a knee to cough some more, spitting the coppery taste out of her mouth.

"Don't ya fuckin' turn this on me, Kensei," Hiyori growled, hand grabbing at her zanpakutou's hilt and tugging it out, the release sending a shock in her general vicinity. "If I never saw ya as part of th'group, I WOULDN'T BE THIS PISSED. 'Cause, BELIEVE ME. IT'S ANNOYIN' T'WORRY 'BOUT YER FUCKIN' ASS."

The blade hadn't even fully left the sheath when suddenly, all the reiatsu dissipated, mask cracking into a million pieces that went flying every which way, leaving Hiyori feeling more exposed than she'd been in a long time.

Shinji had warned her of this before. Of letting her concentration slide, of feeling anything but the anger that all of them sometimes needed to draw on to truly pull the Hollow out. But she had never anticipated actually having to deal with that type of situation--if there was anything Hiyori was confident in, it was her ability to get angry at, well, about everything.

Everything was wrong. Hiyori was supposed to be angry, she was supposed to kick ass, and Kensei was supposed to take it, take it like he always did and more. He was supposed to reason with her until the anger faded, because Kensei was the stable type. The dependable one. She'd pummel him under her fists were numb, then they'd make up over a bag of dum-dum suckers. Rinse and repeat.

Kensei wasn't supposed to leave.

Maybe if she left first, she wouldn't have to witness it. If she didn't see it, it didn't happen, right?

Her cheeks felt suspiciously wet. For a few seconds, Hiyori simply stared.

And then she started to run. But this time, it wasn't towards him.
