Rating; Pg-PG-13? Higher rating for Matt's mouth.
Characters; L (
dubia_lux), Near (

Summary; L meets his successors for the first time in the streets outside Pandora's.
Log;
Quietly, he stood outside Pandora's. L had not seen his successors in a long time. And he was uncertain how much time had passed for them since his death. Knowing that Light was as dead as he was, he figured time had, indeed, passed. Days? Months? ...Years?
There was a tension in his back he could not seem to fight but he maintained an expression of calm, looking upwards as if he were only here to observe the city skyline in the dark.
Out of the corners of his dusky eyes, he watched and waited for his companions.

If it really was L. Hacking the post had been utterly uninformative, and he wasn't really prepared to trust someone claiming to be L without proof. After all, he had been imitated before - there was that BB guy Mello had mentioned once, after all. Why couldn't someone else do it too?
He finally arrived in front of the cafe, heading towards L as cautiously as he could, then paused. What did you say to someone who had been dead for years?
"Hey." It'd do. He flicked some of the ashes off his cigarette.

Such as travel.
All he had to do was envision this Pandora place that Ryuzaki had asked him to come to, and a split second later, he was there. He supposed that was very useful and all, but it sort of gave him the jitters. Really, the SPK agent didn't want to think about what happened to his body in-between the jump. There were too many laws on physics that were being thrown out the window for him.
Stepping closer to the restaurant, he shook off any visible signs of his being disturbed, noting that Matt had beaten him here. That only left Near.
"Ryuzaki, Matt." He inclined his head politely in greeting.

A comment that he had seen over the Network suddenly popped into his head. This is a different universe... Near only just began to grasp the possibilities available here.
Awakening from his thoughts, he saw Matt, Jevanni, and one last welcome face...L. The True L stood before him. A half smile peeked out from his lips and caught some moonlight as he half-nodded to the other two and then said in greeting, "It's been a long time...Ryuzaki."

His intention was for them to follow him, and he led them into an alleyway.

Maybe some gum would do.

Moving almost like a ghost in the moonlight with his loose white outfit and his pale hair, Near walked down the alleyway without a word.

"I hope nobody was tailed," he spoke softly, his voice barely audible. "It would be most unfortunate if this conversation were overheard. Everybody come closer. And have a seat."

He slowly extended a pale wrist to his companions.
"Feel, if you wish."

Twirling a piece of hair on one of his fingers, he mused to himself how clever L really was in doing that. Few people outside of the SPK and Light Yagami's investigation team knew that the real L was dead. By the extension of his hand, L was telling Matt to feel for a pulse. Something only the real L would do, as he should know himself that he was already dead. Without even having to prove he was dead, he proved that he was the true L.
With an inward smile, he looked up at the hunched over figure squatting on the crate. He was really one of the only people that had earned Near's respect, and almost reverence. Near looked up to see Matt's response.
no subject
That really didn't sit well with the SPK member, but he'd just have to deal with it until they got out of this place. Which didn't look like it'd be happening anytime soon.
As L offered one slim wrist to Matt in order to check his pulse, Jevanni watched extra carefully, wanting to catch both of their reactions. Especially Matt's. Because while he sort of trusted that they said who they were, he was more inclined to trust Matt a little more.
Considering that he'd never met or seen L before, it only made sense.

"The truth is," he said softly, "That Yagami Light is here in the City and still has the capacity to kill. There is no mystery behind this anymore. He IS Kira. I am sure you all know that."
He rolled his head to the side and groaned. "The trick is we need to stop him from using his power to control the City. Death here is merely an inconvenience. You rise again after twenty four hours. But to somebody with a god complex this is an ideal. Kira wants people to come back knowing what he is capable of. Since death is not exactly permanent here, I am not sure how the game will end or if an end is even possible. No permanent death, no justice system. We need to expose Kira and somehow prevent him from killing again within what is essentially an anarchy. It will be no simple task."
L touched his thumb to his lips as he usually did when there was no sugar nearby. "There is a silent war going on with uncertain rules in an alien battlefield. And Yagami Light is doubtlessly organizing things on his end as well."
He closed his eyes. "'Yagami Light is Kira' is not enough to close the case or end this battle. For us, this is a paradigm shift."
no subject
"...The capacity to kill..." he began thoughtfully. "How could he have possibly gotten another notebook? They were given back to the shinigami..."
Suddenly, his eyes widened. "Ryuzaki...are there shinigami here?" he asked, eyes fixed on the dark ones that sat in front of him.
no subject
"There is one that I know of. Yes."
no subject
Now, that was the part that really didn't make sense. Near had given the shinigami Ryuk back (his? her?) Death Note. It was possible that it was the same shinigami, of course. But if it was, why would he give Light the Death Note back? Their conversation in the warehouse had made it abundantly clear that he wasn't on anyone's side except his own. Ryuk could be doing it for amusement, but he/she'd already exhausted that possibility. At least, it seemed like it. He'd tuck that idea away for now.
So then there was a shinigami that had given Light a Death Note. Light, in turn, was probably going to plan to use it to his fullest extent. But as L said, death wasn't really a huge, serious thing in this world. So while some may fear "Kira" and his power, it wasn't a grip that would hold very long when they could just come back 24 hours later.
Oh, hang on a second there.
That meant, of course, that normal physics didn't apply here. Jevanni had sort of picked up on that idea on his first day in the City, especially when he'd learned that there were definitely more than one world. So essentially, anything was possible in this place. Hm.
"Do you know their name, then? Because I met a strange person through the network. Had an obsession with apples."
no subject
He sat up, more straight, with his hands still resting on his knees.
"He also never came right out and claimed his affiliation but I am sure that he follows Yagami Light."
no subject
Near placed his hands atop his right knee, then rested his head on top of them. Why would Yagami Light so readily align himself with the same shinigami that had killed him in the first place? Something didn't seem to add up. And this whole "death is a mere inconvenience" thing...If someone were to be killed here, they may resurrect, but they no longer have a pulse. Like L, and apparently Matt and Light, they would be animate, just not alive. There had to be a consequence other than that. Death was not something without consequence no matter what universe they were in.
no subject
"The shinigami probably won't do anything to help Light if he fucking killed Light once," he stated. "Seems like our best initial solution is probably just to take the notebook from Light, then - without it, he'd be pretty much helpless, if there's nobody on his side. And besides, it wouldn't matter too much even if he killed us, since I'm already dead and it doesn't seem to be too much of an issue. Not having a pulse is fucking creepy, but other than that, I'm alright. Once we have the notebook, he can't kill any more, which is what we're going for, right? So, we should probably try to figure out where he's keeping it." There was no way it was that fucking simple, but he could at least suggest things.
no subject
Matt seemed to bring up an interesting point.
If they could somehow get the Death Note away from Light, it would stop this whole mess before it really started. Then again, that would be like pulling teeth. The explanation was simple enough, but pulling it off would be extremely difficult. If only because Light knew what they'd try and pull this time. There would be no following Mikami and copying the Death Note in this round, Yagami would only see through it.
And there was another point.
If there was only one shinigami, that meant only one Death Note. It was altogether possible that Mikami or even the second Kira (Misa) could be here. So how did they know who had it?
"Wait. We can't be sure that it's Light that has the Death Note, can we? Because if he's here and 'alive', so to speak, then X-Kira, or Mikami could be here too." He paused, choosing his words. "While that technically means the same as Light having the notebook, it also means that he may not have it in his actual possession."
no subject
The young man bit his thumb worriedly. "I should warn you. Those of you not already dead may be killed in this struggle. There are consequences to death here. From what I understand, to have your life restored, you must make a trade with a City Deity and their costs are often steep. And until you have life restored, the City possesses you entirely. You cannot find your way out. You are completely trapped. Do you understand? If this is a problem please leave now."
no subject
"Ryuzaki, you and Matt are trapped by the City now, correct? Or is it necessary for one to be killed inside the city before they are trapped?"
Unless Near's presence was known by Yagami Light, he was safe, since Yagami would have no reason to write his name in the Death Note if Near wasn't a threat to him.
Another question popped into his mind as well. "What kinds of powers do these people from other worlds have?" He wished he had a puzzle with him to distract his attention slightly, yet focus it at the same time. There had to be a way to disarm Yagami Light of the Death Note and keep him from getting any other powers. Who knew what could happen in this City, especially if Yagami Light got a hold of those powers.
no subject
He looked upwards. "So far I've met Shinigami unlike our own. I've seen people who are actually computers, warriors in heavy armor from across space and time, vampires, demons, and wizards."
He closed his eyes again. "Things that, from our world, defy all reason."
no subject
But L was asking for his help, and he wasn't willing to refuse.
He sighed yet again and tapped more ash onto the ground. "Well, I'm already fucking dead, so I have the least to fear here, even with all the mysterious powers and people casting Magic Missle and whatever. If there's anything I can do, I'm willing to do it."
no subject
He turned back to L, a thoughtful expression on his face, one finger once again entwined in a white lock of hair. "Over the Network, I was told we were in another universe altogether. Is it that surprising then, that so many things defy our reasoning? Perhaps, since we are in this new universe, Yagami Light merely wished that the Death Note was returned to him and the wish came true. Maybe the Shinigami who gave it to him was from the past, before Yagami Light became Kira in our world, and was once again looking for something to ease his boredom. In a new universe, time travel certainly isn't impossible, if, Ryuzaki, what you're saying is true; that you did indeed meet vampires and demons and the like." He paused, a grave look passing over his features.
"This is worse than trying to bring down Kira in our world...For all we know, there can be a Kira, an X-Kira, a Y-Kira, a Pi-Kira, or an infinite number of them. We don't know anything in this universe. We don't know what is possible and what isn't. We don't know what laws of physics apply here...We don't know if the law of conservation holds true. We don't know anything. We should study our surroundings before making any type of definitive move against Yagami Light. We don't know what he's capable of here," he concluded, looking up at L, a determined look glinting behind his normally cold eyes.
no subject
"Besides our surroundings, I've heard word of things called 'curse days'. They apparently affect almost everyone in the city, and they strike on random days with different symptoms. It's altogether possible that we could use one of those days to our advantage." He said softly, glancing over to Matt.

"What causes these curse days?" he wondered aloud, hoping someone could at least give him some type of hint as to how these days came about, for he had heard of them as well. Considering the strange things and people that were all gathered in this one place, he wasn't as surprised as he should have been about such odd happenings in the City as tasting like a flavor of ice cream.
This place disturbed Near. He wasn't fond of not being sure of himself. In this place however, he couldn't be sure of himself. There were far too many variables and it almost annoyed him. Something here needed to be constant, other than the clock.
no subject
He only half-heard Near ask a question about the curse days, too lost in his own thoughts. This place was so odd, and as much as they'd all like to settle in before going after Kira, they really didn't have that luxury. Light was probably putting ideas into working already, and here they were, not knowing what to do.
no subject
He bit his thumb. "If we used a curse day to our advantage it would have to be a curse day during which we are all unaffected. And that, unfortunately, is beyond our control."
no subject
"It appears as though using a curse day to our advantage is like using the weather to our advantage, just with other consequences than getting wet," he began. "They are random and thus we can't create a specific definite plan unless we know about them well ahead of time. Am I to assume that no one can speak to these Deities?"
Near pulled the white sleeves of his top over his hands so they were hidden and looked thoughtfully up at L. Light must be way ahead of them with figuring out the workings of the City, considering he had been there for a longer time than he had. There was no doubt in Near's mind that at this moment, Yagami Light was scheming. He must know that they were in the City by now...

If those two were with Yagami, then things might get even more complicated from there.
no subject
"There is a Mikami Teru here. I do not trust him, he seems familiar with Light but I am not sure who he is. If..."
It felt strange to say.
He spoke softly but sternly, "What happened after my death? I came here the moment I stopped breathing but the City disobeys the traditional laws of time. For Light and for you...Please tell me what I missed."
no subject
The look of shock was gone almost as soon as it came. "After your death, L, Yagami Light resumed your identity. Mello and I were called into Roger's office and told of your death and how we had to work together in order to bring down Kira, seeing as you were killed before you could appoint a successor. Mello being his normal self, stormed out saying that he would not work with me. And so, Kira's popularity caught on, and his law became the law of the world for a while. Jevanni and I were part of an anti-Kira organization called the SPK and Mello utilized organized crime in order to obtain and experiment with the Death Note. Your assumption that the rule that states 'If you do not write in the Death Note for 13 days, you will die,' was true is in fact false," he explained as he looked up at L to see his reaction. Not many people could fool L, and so he was unsure of how he would react.
"Thus, Yagami Light's containment meant nothing. Also, at the time of your death, there were two Death Notes in the human world. One of them was given to another shinigami to take with him back to the Shinigami world. Yagami had the another one apparently. He sent it to a Kira follower. His name: Mikami Teru. He was chosen because he kept most of Kira's ideals in sight while we kept an eye on Yagami. Mikami did the exchange for the Shinigami eyes and so could see people's names. Also, an acquaintance of Yagami's, Kiyomi Takada, was appointed as Kira's spokesperson. Coincidentally, he began to meet her and again, coincidentally, 'Kira' told them both to not videotape the room they were meeting in. To save time, Matt and Mello both sacrificed their lives so that I would be led to an answer to the Kira case."
He twirled a finger through his hair as he paused again to take breath. The story was quite long, even if it was abridged.
"We agreed to meet face to face, the SPK and the Japanese task-force that Yagami was on. We met in a warehouse where the only way in and out was a single door. Thus, Yagami could tell Mikami to peek into the door, read our names, and put them into the Death Note. However, he did not realize that Jevanni here switched real Death Note pages with fake ones. When we went outside to check the pages, the only name not on the page was Yagami Light's, thus damning him as Kira. Ryuk, the Shinigami that follows Yagami, put his name in Death Note because apparently, he wasn't 'amused' anymore, since he was caught."
Near finished the whole story by resting his hands on his knee and his cheek on his hands looking at the others.
no subject
As he thought about Near's words things started to gain clarity. "Mikami Teru preserved the ideals of Kira while you watched Light....The same may be happening again. Light has been slow to make a move but he did not predict that you three would show up."
He lifted his head high. "I will continue to monitor Yagami-kun. Please keep an eye on Mikami and on Misa-san. And an eye on the man called Dietrich."
no subject
When he heard L give the order, he looked back up again. So Amane was here as well, and Yagami was trying to create the whole ordeal over again. Near would not allow that to happen.
"I understand. This Dietrich...another puppet in Yagami's scheme is he?"
no subject
Near was explaining what had happened in the case after L's death, and the dark haired genius was listening patiently. Afterwards, he started to fit the pieces together. It startled Jevanni to know that Misa was here too, though the bit about Mikami made sense. Would he be assigned to look after the routine-following X-Kira again? It'd make sense, since he'd done so before. Though Light and Mikami might see it coming. In which case, it'd be better if someone else was assigned that task. Suddenly, he wished the rest of the SPK was here. With Halle and Lester, they'd be able to trade it off and shuffle it around.
The last name L mentioned was Dietrich. If he was considered watch-able, then he was probably with Light. Or, if not, dangerous at the very least. That wasn't surprising, but it didn't make him feel any better.
no subject
"So, we all know who Kira is now, and who to be careful of," he mused. "Should we break up the meeting for now, or does anyone have some brilliant plan? Because the longer we stay here, the more likely it becomes that somebody catches us all hiding in an alleyway."
no subject
He pulled a scrap of paper from the pocket of his jeans. "This is from the murderer's notebook. It will allow you to see the Reaper you call Ryuk."
no subject
Wondering, but not willing to test out, if he could still see Ryuk, Near slowly got up from his crouched position and stepped over to where L was seated. He grabbed the corner of the scrap and then let it go.
"If I notice anything suspicious, I will post to the network," he said.
no subject
When L asked for them to touch the notebook paper, he hesitated briefly, but did it anyway, thumb and forefinger grabbing hold of the corner and then releasing. He took a quick look around, but didn't see anything. That was relieving, in a way. It would do no good for the reaper to be anywhere nearby this meeting.
"As will I." He said, half turning to go.
no subject
He then waited for the others to leave first.
