Log:

Between catching up with friends, finding a pair of roller-skates that would fit Kuwabara, and enjoying a little time out skating himself, Kurama had had a fairly busy day. It had been pleasant, but he was still worried about Kuronoe. He wondered how long it would be until his partner could relax again.

Now he had another matter to attend to. He'd met a young woman through the network who was in need of some help settling into the City, and while he was willing to offer her a safe place to stay, he needed to be certain she was no danger to the inhabitants of the apartment. He was alert as he stepped into Cafe Juliet, curious as to what sort of first impression she would make after the description she had given him of her talents.

Willow was at a table, laptop open as she tried to send an e-mail off to Kennedy. Every time she tried though, it bounced back less than five seconds later. Frowning and fighting back a frustrated growl, she closed the laptop, a mixture of tiredness and exasperation on her features. Her red hair made her stand out from the other people in the cafe, but that wasn't the only thing. She just exuded power; even those without powers seemed to be able to sense it.

Taking a sip of the hot tea she had ordered, Willow sighed deeply, leaning back in her chair. Despite all the downsides this place seemed to offer, things were looking up. She had been offered a place to stay, but he had wanted to meet her first. She couldn't blame him for that; after all, who knows who - or what - could be lurking in this place? Her guard was up, no doubt.

It didn't take Kurama long to trace the power to its source. He had taken care to mask his own as he neared the cafe, but he wondered now if the young woman was powerful enough to recognize that he wasn't entirely human. He certainly looked entirely human as he strode to the woman's table and paused a polite distance from her.

"You would be Willow, I take it?" he inquired with a polite smile.

Willow looked up from her position and smiled, sitting up straighter. "Sure am," she replied, motioning to the other chair at the table. "Please, have a seat," she continued, looking him over. A fellow redhead. Okay, but there was something about him that she couldn't quite put her finger in. He had a power, certainly, but she couldn't discern what it was. The air in this city was thick with energy, and it was hard to pinpoint. Though he was sitting across from her, so it was a good deal easier.

"Thank you." He took a moment when one of the wait staff approached to order some green tea, then turned the whole of his attention back to Willow. "I do hope you don't mind that we talk before proceeding any further. If what you've told me is true, you understand what it means to have people you need to protect." The young woman seemed pleasant enough, he decided. She was strong, but there was nothing overtly menacing in either her behavior or the energy he sensed. Still ... Kurama had the feeling that he wasn't sensing the whole of her power.

"It's fine," said Willow, taking a sip of her own tea, "I understand completely. Having people I need to protect? Been there, done that, still doing it. Every day." She smiled some, crossing her legs under the table. She still wasn't able to tell anything about the man from his power, but his aura was a bit different from a humans, powered or otherwise.

"You mentioned magic." Kurama paused to thank the waitress who brought him his tea, continuing only once she'd left. "What sort?" He needed not only to know if this woman would be safe to bring near his mother, but how she would react to what many cultures perceived as demons.

Willow raised a brow. "If you want to get specific, I'm a Wiccan," she replied, "I am the peace loving sort, I just need to get aggressive when I'm threatened. Or the world needs saving. Either or." She waved a hand to emphasize the point a bit, her other hand in her lap.

Western magic. Kurama wasn't as familiar with it as with the techniques used in Asia, and after his prior experiences with Hellsing, was now more wary of it than before. "You're from America?" he asked. The accent sounded right, at least. "How familiar are you with Asian cultures and mythology?"

Nodding in response to his question, Willow smiled again. "Got it in one," she said, "And a little? I didn't really do extensive research on that sort of thing, though I suppose maybe I should."

He nodded. "It may be easier if you don't have many preconceived notions." Then he stopped shielding his youki. There was a seed already waiting in his palm, unobtrusive, just in case.

There wasn't much of a reaction from Willow, other than another brow raise. "I see," she said, "Well, so long as you don't attack me in my sleep, you have nothing to worry about when it comes to my powers." She smiled, taking another sip of her tea calmly. "You may not be human," she continued, "But you've given me no reasons to mistrust you, so..."

Better than he'd anticipated. Kurama slipped the seed back into hiding with an idle gesture that only another thief might catch for what it was. "I generally don't stoop to such levels, and neither do the others. I had to be certain you weren't a threat to either humans or youkai." He returned her smile with one of his own. "We can give you a safe place to stay, at the very least while you find your feet here."

Willow smiled, giving a nod of her head. "Thank you," she said, "I really do appreciate your kindness." She put her laptop away, finishing the last of her tea as she did. "So, where do you live?" she asked, "In one of the apartments?"

"You're welcome. I know it's difficult when you've first arrived. A little company makes things easier." Having finished his own tea, Kurama folded his hands in front of him, and rested his elbows at the edge of the table. "I share two apartments, actually, in Building Three, with my mother and a few friends."

Nodding again, Willow stood, pulling her bags onto her shoulders with a smile. "Let's go then," she said, "I'm looking forward to meeting your friends and family."

He rose with her, and accompanied her to the door. "Certainly." He wondered what Hiei would have to say about another stranger in the presence of Yukina, but that was a concern for later.
