Scientists and Soldiers
When; Sometime after this thread, but after the curse is over.
Rating; PG
Characters; Sephiroth & Marie Delacroix
Summary; Sephiroth shows a new acquaintance his workplace.
Log;
It had been easy for him to grow accustomed to working in the lab here in the City. At home, he worked nearly constantly, especially in recent months. The Wutai War had become the Genesis War, and it was simpler for him to keep himself occupied than to dwell on that fact and all that it meant.
He had no formal training in science, but he had grown up in a lab, surrounded by researchers and research, and he had read voraciously since learning his letters. Children's stories and fairy tales had meant little to him. Not only had he not been encouraged to read them, but he'd had no real interest in doing so. Biology, chemistry, astronomy, geology: these and related subjects had held more appeal to him than most others, the obvious exceptions being warfare and strategy. Sometimes he wondered, if he hadn't been raised to be a SOLDIER, what else might he have become? There had been no question in anyone's mind of him becoming anything other than a warrior at the time, but lately he had begun to have his doubts. He had begun to doubt many things.
At home, few of those he'd been in the habit of spending time with had shared his interest in the sciences. Most SOLDIERs, for all that they might have been gifted and intelligent, were not scientists. He tended to avoid Shinra's actual scientists, and the one he had most occasion to talk to was the one he most wanted to avoid. The professor never failed to agitate him, a feat few others managed. Sephiroth was glad, then, that Delacroix had a scientific mind and was eager to discuss such matters. It was true that their first meeting had had its ups and downs, as Sephiroth had rescued her and then she had shot at him, but if there was anyone willing to forgive a shot fired in the heat and confusion of the moment, it was Sephiroth. The fact that he could dodge bullets probably had a great deal to do with that.
The chemistry lab at City Solutions was not his, but he had it to himself, most days, and indeed, it was empty when he opened the door that morning. The laboratory might not have been his, but he was pleased to see it, and pleased to show her inside.

Appreciated as the man's scientific interests are, she still does not trust Sephiroth. Fascinated by him, surely. Even the annelids had fascinated her, she was not the only one to use the Von Braun's equipment to try to unravel their secrets. Of course... bright as the feeling was, that experience was tainted with the necessity of survival.Things are not so desperate here, but her stomach crawls to think what kind of horror this man was made into. Can he truly claim to be human? She wants to study his bone structure, his blood, his DNA. She is almost as interested in him as she is in the facility.
With her, Delacroix has brought a pad of paper and a pen. She takes notes, often and in detail. The audio logs scattered across the ship had been invaluable to herself and her fellow fighters, and it is a habit she sees no need to break, although now that she is not in near total isolation from all intelligent company, she need not narrate aloud.

He's not used to being mistrusted, himself. Most people at home rely on him, look to him for guidance. But he can ignore that, focusing on work as he usually does, ignoring emotion (which ultimately goes so well for him). He'll do his duty, in his own way. At least he's managed to find no shortage of ways to occupy his time here: his study of the City, his patrolling, his pet, and of course, his lab work. "As I said, I haven't been here long. I wish I had more to show you." He's had to do a great deal of research first. He is a soldier rather than a scientist, and the laws of this world are not quite the same as his own, not to mention all the other worlds represented here. Research alone would be enough to occupy anyone here for a lifetime, but he prefers applied science. Though not bioengineering. Never that.
"What was the focus of your work, in your world?"

Marie gives that answer with very little fuss, continuing to investigate the facilities around her. It's all so incredibly primitive and backwards, but that will not stop her. They had been forced to some primitive means to survive against the annelids for as long as they had. Desperate animals acted out in desperate ways.
"I maintenanced every aspect of zhe ship, whether eet was my purview or not."
They called her for everything, even when the replicators were hacked. She was not a vending machine technician for fuck's sake.
