WINTER GALA IS OPEN ~ !

Seen the sign? It’s everywhere.

And every little corner, and every little street, strident and glistening and snow everywhere. Statue here, statue there – North, South, East, West – they do call it the Square. There’s word they’re war heroes, or troubled hallows, or nothing of the sort. That might be ice they’re sculpted in – or the sliver in some champagne glass, because giants drink too, and the City knows things. The City doesn’t tell.

But the tap those statues once or twice, and tap them strong, and tap them well, and they’ll whisper a secret. The little Elf army scuttling about has seen better days for wear (mostly Thursdays), but they’re only three feet tall, and the silver powder on their cheek’s both rigidly applied, and rented. Kick’em. They’re fluent in seven languages, you know. They have a degree. Naghladi’gjamarai got a Nobel nomination last year; no one knows. The human reporter didn’t look down to his knee when he was interviewing. Humans, so damned righteous.

Like the lights everywhere can never go out.

Like they’re the first ones here, dancing all too merry.

Like it’s their celebration.

Like it’s not all coming out of their City taxes.

Idiots.

Nill blinked surprisedly, spotting someone familiar out of the crowd.

Joshua...?

She took a step back, rethought about it, and stood her ground. He didn't look angry or anything...it'd be okay to stay...right?

When they made eye contact, the teenage boy blinked and tried to remember what it was he had been doing. Looking for...someone. Someone with blond hair. Maybe it had been here.

Damn, it was hard to keep things in order without Fiore around to remind him.

With a smile and a blank look in his eyes, Joshua slowly walked towards her, apparently in no hurry and certainly not afraid that someone might attempt to intercept him.

He knew that she could hear, but he could also remember a bit of the sign language her German friend has taught him. So, curiously, he lifted a hand and signed out one word to her.

Dance?

Nill looked around, it seemed like nobody minded or said no...she smiled softly and signed back to him.

Okay.

With a chuckle, he held his hand out for hers. They were so dainty, just like the rest of her. Nill was so fragile that it was no surprise how everyone treated her like a porcelain doll.

But Joshua knew better. She didn't crack like all of the others who pretended to be strong. He had killed her, insulted her, and threatened her...and what did she do in response?

"I know you left me a Christmas present," the Apostle murmured as he guided her onto the dance floor. "Why?"

Nill took the outstretched hand and followed him to the dance floor.

She remained silent to his question. Well, it was pretty much the only thing she could do. Even Nill didn't understand why she did it. The girl had felt betrayed, yes, but still, she had been at fault...right? She had caused Joshua pain...

Her silence would have normally unnerved him, at least expecting some sort of signed reply, but instead he felt soothed.

And Joshua was a courteous dance partner, moving at a slow pace as he lead her around the dance floor, all the while trying to remember what it was he had been doing before he had crossed paths with her once more.

She followed his lead, careful not to step on any feet. After all, one could never be too careful about those things.

Nill watched Joshua, it looked like he had forgotten something...Hadn't he been looking for something earlier? She signed the first thing that came to her mind.

Rosette?

...Rosette? Ah! "Rosette!"

With the reminder, Joshua immediately let go of Nill mid-spin so that he could quickly dart off and away from him to find his sister.

He wasn't trying to be rude, but of course his sister was his number one priority, and so he merely forgot about his dance with Nill as soon as her name was mentioned.

She giggled softly. So she had been right. Nill paused for a moment, she was wondering how Rosette was doing...well, if Joshua was looking for her, that meant she was here.

Nill wandered back to her place by the wall. Maybe she'd spot Rosette later.
