Free tiny glasses of champagne, free tiny bits of food; forced politeness and mild embarrassment all around; it was like being in a little piece of Washington. Which didn't mean she liked it, but it was an old annoyance and firmly stamped down by practice and necessity. The only difference in her usual attire was a little extra makeup and leaving her hair down, but since it happened so rarely it often left her looking like an entirely different person. She had never felt completely comfortable in dresses and now that wrinkles and such were starting to make themselves known she was even more loathe of bearing her skin. And it was extremely hard to hide a gun in a dress.

She smiled and shook the hand of anyone around, a simple introduction and the ensuing small-talk flowing from her lips without ever involving her brain. All the time she was keeping an eye out for the people around whom the party moved. The powerful ones, the important figures: those were the ones she wanted to meet.

Maybe that's why all three from their world had decided to attend. In Washington, showing up at one of these was a statement on civility and influence. Nicholas Brocklehurst had a little bit of both, more of one over the other. He was dressed in a simple classic tuxedo, no different from the one he wore days before first meeting George Blake.

Blue eyes caught her ginger red hair from a distance, and Brocklehurst smiled to her over his glass of champagne.

He took the glass out of Brocklehurst's hand.

"Keep looking, Nicholas, you still don't get to go talk to her." He smiled casually at her and waved just a touch. "Rosiel's asking for you."

He glanced at the former undersecretary, taken by surprise though not showing it with such a subtle and covert expression. Nicholas masked it with another smile to George, then a straightening of his collar now that his hands were free. He gave Christopher a look.

"Play nice," he suggested, half humorous, half serious.

Then he continued with his social fraternizing.

They were obviously well-practiced at keeping their relationship secret - if she didn't know it was there she never would have seen the tell-tale signs. She nodded back at both of them with a smile and when Nicholas wandered off wondered whether a confrontation with Styles in such a public environment would really be beneficial. Of course, she couldn't just ignore him all night either.

With a "getting this over with" attitude in mind, she took up a new glass of champagne and started walking slowly in his direction, blatantly giving him time to leave before she got there if he wanted to.

Styles watched her move through the crowd. Just get it over with.

"Blake." He said with a nod when she approached. "Settling in?"

"Styles," she acknowledged, granting him a wry smile. "A party like this is enough to make a girl feel at home."

See? She could be nice. No mentions of drug overdoses in autopsy reports or plans to incite a nuclear war. Just safe smalltalk, albeit frosty smalltalk.

He hated the FBI agent. Maybe hate was a strong word. Sincerely disliked might have been better. "I'm surprised. I didn't know they made you attend banquets." Styles sipped his cider and nodded. An insult or a compliment? With him, it was likely to be both.

Despised was probably the best word from where George was standing, but there might have been a little pity mixed in there too. She might have wished him dead a few times in the past, but that didn't mean she had been pleased to see his corpse.

"You can only refuse so many invitations before being rude."

For that comment George entertained herself with the thought of "tripping" and spilling her drink on his silk tie, but the only outward sign was a tightening of her smile. She was more likely to assume the worst of Mr. Styles.
