He eyed the wizard, weighing the possibilities.

"That's all right, Harry. You don't have to."

"Besides," he went on, "There ought to be an emergency telegram coming for me in about....say, eight and a half minutes." he grinned, checking his watch.

Harry smiled back. He should have known that the Commander would have had something planned.

"That's probably for the best. Everyone comes to the circus to see the clown anyways," he said, glancing over to where Prince Charming was.

He glanced over to where the prince was socializing with his circle of friends and admirers and resisted, not for the first time, the urge to groan.

"This whole bloody affair was his idea. If something out there happens while we're in here, I'm not looking forward to getting laughed at."

"Not as though there'd be much to do anyway" he admitted, half to himself.

"Well, just think of it as good publicity for the position," Harry said. "And it could be worse. He did do a lot during the invasion."

The wizard wondered if any of the more unpleasant factions in the City would try something during the ball.

"Come on Commander, you know anyone particularly vile is probably here making allies and friends just like everyone else."

"The Major". Vimes felt his hackles rising at the mere mentioning of the name. "Among others."

"Yes, those others." Harry gave a dramatic sigh. "You can't live with 'em and you can't get them to stay dead here even if you could execute them after trying them in a court of law."

"I don't want them killed. I want them caught, brought in and arrested. And kept that way. Though, I suppose that's asking too much." he scowled, checking his watch.

"Well, I'll let you get back to waiting for your message Commander," Harry said, reaching out to shake the man's hand. "I might go over and say hello to the Major. I might get lucky and he'll have some sort of electronic device on his person that my magic will break. It was good seeing you sir, and congratulations."

He reached out and shook Harry's hand back gruffly. "Congratulate me when I've done something worth it."
