Summary; The Doctor and Rose meet to try and start to work out some of their differences.

Hands in his pockets, his pose reminiscent of one he'd taken what seemed a lifetime ago when he and Rose had first departed company on a beach. This was a different situation though, this time they were meeting. To the Doctor, that made all the difference in the world. He had missed Rose before the curse, but afterward it was even worse. At least cursed he hadn't known what he was missing, but now he had been with her and then she had left. It hadn't been their first parting, of course, but it was the first one where they could actually be together.

And the Doctor had resolved to do what he could to fix things between them. He wasn't so arrogant as to assume that at least some of the blame wasn't his. He still felt it was mostly Rose, but he was often rude and more than occasionally neglectful of things so perhaps a good measure of the blame rested on him as well.

But, he was working on changing some areas of his life, so hopefully that counted for something. And he loved Rose, and he knew that she loved him too, and that had to count for even more. So they would meet, and see where that lead. If nothing else, it would be good to see her again.

Rose continued walking towards the destination where they were set to meet lost in thought. She hadn’t bothered to leave a note behind for her flat mates since they would have probably advised her against meeting him but she had to do this on her own. A part of her still felt terrible because of the last curse. Waking up with his other self and supposedly engaged had been shocking though she couldn’t really remember it and maybe just maybe that was for the best.

But after hearing what the Doctor had gone through without her, it worried her. She had missed him so much since they parted. And she hoped that they could resolve things. She still loved him despite it all. It wasn’t long before she saw his form and slowly approached, and then stopped. There was an urge there to just wrap her arms around him in an embrace but for now she kept a bit of distance.

"Hi," she said giving him a small smile.

When the Doctor saw Rose, it was all he could do to keep from running to her. Well, checking for anything that might shoot him and then go running to her. But he knew that might not be such a great idea at the moment. Instead, he settled for beaming broadly at her, one of his trademark, dazzling smiles. Because no matter what, seeing Rose was a good thing.

"Rose Tyler I have missed you so much," he told her, bouncing a bit on the balls of his feet at the temptation to step forward and give her a hug. "And it is so good to see you, especially after the curse the other day. I don't like who I am without you in my life, Rose."

The blonde remained rooted in place holding onto her smile as she listened to his words. It was tempting to get just step a little closer but she found her feet unable to move. Maybe it was still the guilt of the other curse day still eating away at her, despite his reassurance that he didn’t care.

"I’ve missed you too, Doctor," she admitted but she knew that it wasn’t going to be that easy this time. She started to think back to what he had said the night before about doing something but the timing not being right yet. But just as she was going to question him on it there was more and it was touching to hear. "Yeah, I..." she said, her voice trailing off for a second. Sometimes he just had a way with words that left her at a loss for words, and this was one of those times. She moved closer until she was right in front of him just one step away from closing the gap, but she stopped again to stare into his eyes.

"I know...I..." She wanted to apologize but just couldn't do it as she returned back to the topic, "But you must have given Martha quite a time,"

The Doctor wasn't able to contain himself, a trait of his that had often either gotten him into trouble or out of it. He hoped that this was one of the times it worked his his favor. Slowly, he reached out and gently touched her arm, his body relaxing a bit at the physical contact that he had so badly missed. Somehow, with Rose being close enough to touch, things were slightly better.

"I did, I'm sure," he agreed, thinking back to the hazy memories he had of the years that hadn't really happened. Martha had certainly had to put up with a lot. They'd had good times too of course, but the Doctor had had so much anger.

"But she wasn't you, Rose. No one is you, no one can make me as happy as you can."

When she felt his hand brush against her arm, she froze for a second and then relaxed. It had been so long since she had let him get this close and it was welcoming. She knew that he was right though a part of her wanted to argue with his latter statement recalling the time he pushed her away and told her that there would be someone else. That he’d find someone else if he didn’t have her.

"Doctor...You don’t know that."

"I do know that Rose," he told her. "I'm maybe the only person in the entire universe that can say that because I can see things, and I can see that Rose Tyler makes me happier than anyone else in the world. And that because of her I'm a better person."

He didn't say that he could also see that she would be happier in the long run with John. He didn't say it because he hated admitting it and he had promised her he would let her make her own choices. Stay or go, him or Joh, he would let Rose choose.

"Then why did you push me away at first?" she asked her smile fading as she got serious. That had really hurt her then. "You were wrong, yeah?" She didn't want to complete that statement but she hoped that he would know what she meant, about what he had said to her. That she would be better off with John.

The Doctor worked his jaw as he thought about his response, since a lot would hang on it. He could lie to her of course, and she would probably never know, but that wasn't how he wanted things to be between them.

"I still think I was right in why I pushed you away," he finally said. "But I do know I was wrong to not give you a choice and to not respect your decision and have faith that you know what's best for you."

There was just no way she could win that argument and she knew it. In her eyes it had been wrong of him and cold. But at least he admitted that he had been wrong on that beach in not giving her a choice. She was glad that he was realizing that now.

"Right...Well that's one thing settled." she said looking away from him for a moment.

"But that's hardly everything, is it?" he asked, the fact that she looked away was evident that there was more keeping them apart than just that. He hoped they would be able to talk about it, because he was really at a loss for what it could be. The Doctor knew that he had his fair share of (very minor) flaws, but nothing that he thought would keep Rose from being with him.

Apparently though, she thought different.

"Hardly," she confirmed still not facing him, thinking to what had bothered her. The Rani’s sudden appearance had certainly gotten to her and the fact that they had both been handcuffed to each other hadn’t helped things. It had given her ideas. Ideas that had just pushed her away along with John’s appearance. It had scared her that the Doctor was going to go back on his word somehow and just push her towards his other self.

But that was just the tip of the ice berg. "You...you avoid things." She started off. "I say things and it’s like I never say them sometimes with you. Or when certain things happen." She said thinking back to when he was cursed once and awfully rude to her tricking her out of the TARDIS. "And the next day it's like nothing ever happened at all." Not that that was the main issue that bothered her but it was one of them.

"Wellll..." The Doctor trailed off, reaching up to scratch his head as he thought that one over. Okay, there was really no denying that. Well, he could maybe ignore it but that was really not the best option right now considering the topic.

"I may avoid some topics," he said, wanting to be perfectly clear. Because he did not avoid situations or people, just topics. "Because some topics that should have never been brought up in the first place, and some topics I refuse to talk about and even more topics I'd just rather not talk about. I suppose that the non rude and respectful thing to do would be to clarify verbally which category certain topics I have previously ignored fall under and then we can go from there."

And there he went on rambling again which drew her gaze back on him. Some topics, she thought. Lots of topics really but she wasn’t about to list them all. She’d probably be here all night and into the next morning if she tried.

"Like the mind sex thing, yeah?" she asked only recently having learned of it from John. Sometimes it was just easier to talk with his clone. She found some things out that she was sure that the Doctor would never ever tell her.

The Doctor frowned a bit at that. It was one of the topics that shouldn't have been brought up. Generally, other people giving your mate orgasms should probably be left alone.

"Alright, let's talk about that one," the Doctor said, crossing his arms a bit. "Let's talk about how you don't trust me with the Rani, but now you want to talk about how someone else gave you an orgasm. Discuss."

Rose found herself looking away from him. It had been an accident really. "I didn't know about that." Clearly there was a lot that the Doctor was keeping from her. And then her eyes settled back on him. "It was an accident anyway the Rani. Let's discuss her." She said quickly shifting topics again.

"Oh no," the Doctor said, grinning just a bit at the situation. "Neither of us should avoid things, Rose. So you brought the topic up so we're going to talk about it. We'll talk about the Rani after this."

Maybe he was being a bit of a jerk about it, but she was being hypocritical and having a double standard. If he couldn't avoid things then she shouldn't either.

"What more needs explaining, Doctor? We were cursed and it just happened. I mean, John felt so awful about it afterwards." She stated looking away from him again. "What else do you want to know?"

The Doctor scratched his head and gave a puzzled look. That really was a good question, nothing more needed explaining. He just didn't want to let her get away with changing the subject.

"Well, nothing more really, I just didn't want you to get away with avoiding the topic," he admitted. "Alright, on to the Rani then!"

"I'm not the sort to avoid topics unlike some people," she pointed out not being able to not really say that, before moving onto his ex. "Fine then, the Rani. Discuss." she said crossing her arms against her chest and staring straight at him.

"Rose, what is there to discuss?" he asked. "I've been honest about her. She used to be my wife and we had a family. I up and left her and took our granddaughter Susan. Didn't come across her again until she was torturing a whole planet and we tried to kill each other a few times."

She was going to make a remark about opposites attracting and that who knew what was really going to happen in the City. She still felt a bit insecure about the Rani being there but she was sure that he felt the same way about a certain other person being in the City.

"Fine then you abandoned them and then you tried to kill her. That's fine, I suppose." The blonde didn't know what else to say to that but just leave it at that. "Explains a lot..."

"Rose, what else do you want me to say?" he asked, able to tell that she was still not very pleased about the situation, as if it was somehow his fault that the Rani was here and he was also to blame for Rose's insecurities.

"I could tell you all our history together if you want. That just might take a while."

"You could," she started off again giving it some thought. Really she was interested in hearing more about his past even if it involved the ex. She had dealt with this situation before somewhat only it had been with Sarah Jane. At least with that situation they were both the same species.

"I think I'd like to hear it sometime." she said and then bit her lip at a thought.

"It's a lot to tell," he admitted to her. It was a lot, a lot to tell but if she wanted to hear it sometime he'd tell her. "But when we have more I'll tell you all you want to hear. Well, so long as it's not something that violates the Rani's privacy, then you'd have to ask her."

He paused for a moment and wondered if he should tell her about what he had been planning, but he didn't think the time was right just yet.

"So anything else?"

"Oh I bet it is," she said with a bit of a smile to her lips. At the mention of his ex, Rose glanced down again, tucking some loose strands of hair behind her ear. The Time Lady still didn’t settle well with her. "Right then."

Inwardly she was debating as to whether to tell him something else or not. It might just make things awkward or possibly worse and she didn’t want that. "Yeah, I..." Without bothering to finish her sentence the blonde closed the remaining gap between them to wrap her arms around his neck, embracing him closely. Her head resting against his shoulder, she closed her eyes for a second. "I’ve really missed you..." she muttered.
