"So, you going to ask?" Dawn can't take the pressure. You broke her, Tosh. Or maybe she just really wants to talk about it.
no subject
She thinks she's doing pretty well at this whole Big Sister bit, to be honest. So far there's been no flailing or stuttering or wondering what the hell she's supposed to say to that.
no subject
She trails off, frowning a little. Don't worry, Tosh, Dawn is just happy you're not talking about ABBA like Ianto or laughing like Kyle. "I don't know. I mean, still good with the boys here. Liking of the boys. But not sure that's all."
She blushes. "Thinking about kissing girls is... not unattractive. To the tune of sounding like a good idea. But I don't want to jump into anything and figure out I was just... I don't know."
no subject
She stops in front of the window of a little boutique and looks contemplatively inside. "And it sounds like maybe that's what has you thinking? It's not that you're running out just finding random people of either sex, more like you're thinking you might like Thelma a little bit."
no subject
She looks up at a cute pair of shoes thoughtfully. Those would look awesome with her black skirt. Anyway. Turning back to Tosh, she shakes her head. "Not so much like that. For one thing, she's not into me on a relationship level. And also, I just broke up with Sam. Even if I did feel like that, it'd be dumb to jump into something."
no subject
"Good. I'm glad you're not just trying to replace one relationship with another. In that case, I say go have fun. You know, be careful, and don't do anything you think you might have regrets about later. But if she's nice to be around, then go out with her. You're too young to be all tied down anyway."
no subject
"No, that's exactly what I don't want. I think I rushed things a little with Sam, and I'd need more time anyway. It wouldn't be fair to anyone to just... swap relationships or whatever." Dawn pauses to consider another pair of shoes, then turns to Tosh. "You wanna continue this inside while I ogle the shoes?"
no subject
Tosh shoos Dawn inside to ogle shoes, nodding thoughtfully. "It's easy to get caught up when you think you've found something you really want," she says carefully. "Even when maybe you know it's not the best thing for you, it's still hard to be logical when your heart's involved."
no subject
Dawn picks up one of the shoes and looks at it critically. "Is that your subtler-than-Kyle way of saying you don't think Sam was very good for me?" She asks dryly, not looking up from the shoe. "Because it was admirably subtle."
She sets down the shoe, and lays a hand on Tosh's arm. "I'm not going to rush into anything, I promise."
no subject
If she's honest though, Tosh really doesn't mind.
Putting her hand over Dawns, she gives her head a little shake. "Not exactly. I think the two of you let things get too intense, too quickly. And I won't deny that I'm more than a little displeased with Sam's stunt the day you checked out of the clinic. But considering the bad decisions I've made myself, I can't really fault you for yours. Not that I think Sam was a bad decision. He seemed like a nice enough boy. Just...maybe not the right person to get so serious with, straight off. That's all."
no subject
"Okay, that one's not his fault. I didn't have to go when he asked, Tosh. But I appreciate the sentiment." Dawn gives Tosh a kiss on the cheek. "He was. I mean, he is. But now I think I need to get my head on right and not let something get so serious without thinking about it more, again."
no subject
Then she gave the other woman a stern look. "No, it is his fault. Because I know you. You'd drag yourself legless and bleeding if someone you cared about asked you to come to them. Sam knew you'd been sick enough to be under doctor's supervision, and he should never have suggested it to begin with." The kiss on the cheek mollifies her a little, and Tosh ducks her head a bit, looking sheepish. "Well. I agree with that. You know, not all relationships are meant to be serious ones. They can still be good relationships, even if the only purpose is companionship and a bit of fun. Right?"
no subject
Dawn sighs. "Tosh, come on. That's not- You know he wouldn't try to do anything like that on purpose. It was maybe a little thoughtless, but not malicious." Dawn raises an eyebrow. "Yeah, sure. You know, that sounded like a request for validation, Miz Sato. Do you have a bit of fun happening, then? Details, I demand them. Spill."
Dawn takes a seat to try on one of the pairs of shoes, and looks up at Tosh expectantly.
no subject
With a look that suggests Dawn isn't going to convince her to change her mind on the matter, Tosh replies, "I never said I thought it was meant maliciously. But it was thoughtless. And I think that's a perfectly good reason for me to be a little unhappy about the situation."
Tosh sits down as well, with an approving nod at the shoes. "At the moment, not a single bit of it. Haven't had so much as a movie date since I last saw Steven. Although considering the dry spell most of my life has been, I'd say that's a pretty good recent track record. Still, you get a bit used to not spending all your time at home, you know? And this talk isn't supposed to be about me anyway!"
no subject
Dawn rolls her eyes but doesn't pursue the Sam discussion further. She does, however, wonder if Tosh will ever figure out about Jack. "Hey, equal opportunity talking! I talk, you talk, we both shop."
no subject
What about Jack?
"Well we're shopping for your not-actually-a-date thing, so I think you should be talking and I should be listening," she answers.
no subject
Dawn raises an eyebrow. "So, if I were to ask about a certain FBI agent and a game of pool, you would have nothing to say? Come on, Tosh, spill!"
no subject
Also, Tosh is totally not blushing over that question. And does not give a little excited bounce in her seat. "Do you know who that is? I mean, you're American, you know all those shows and things, right?"
Okay, so maybe she's having a little bit of a fangirl moment.
no subject
Dawn grins. "Fox Mulder, hell yes I know who that is!" She bounces a little, herself. "You're totally going to introduce us, right?"
no subject
Tosh grins. "Well I don't know what's popular with American kids and what's not. It's sort of neat though, isn't it? And I can't promise anything, I haven't even met him face to face myself. Which is pretty sad, considering we both work on the police force."
She hands Dawn a pair of shoes to try on. "I'm sort of dying to hear more about his cases. They sound pretty interesting. And it's nice to talk to someone who doesn't think you're mad because you say you work with aliens."
no subject
Dawn tries on the shoes, frowning thoughtfully. "They're cute, but the heels are too clunky." She points to a pair on a table a few feet away. "What about those ones? And once you do meet, I demand an introduction. It's Mulder. Willow and Xander would kill me if he was here and I didn't at least say hello."
no subject
"Oh, I thought they were cute," she protests, getting up to trade for the shoes Dawn indicates. "But if you can dance in heels like this, then...good for you!"
Pot, meet kettle. Tosh has a pair of pretty ridiculous heels sitting in her own closet. Which she did, in fact, buy for a dancing date.
"I'll do my best, Dawn, but I can't promise anything. He's awfully busy with the investigations. But I'll at least drop your name and mention you'd like an introduction."
no subject
"No! Tosh, you can't just be all 'oh, my nerdy little sister wants to meet you!'" Dawn slips on the shoes and stands, testing them out. "You have to be subtle. Have him pick you up, or meet up at home and I can be there and meet him."

no subject
"All right, I'll try and phrase it a bit more subtly than that. But you stop trying to make a big deal out of it!" She nods in agreement at the shoes. "Too fussy. You're not going to the prom."
no subject
Dawn spreads her hands placatingly. "No deals here, promise. Big or otherwise." She nods. "They are kind of prom-y, huh? Maybe I can get them for later. But they are not Not-Date shoes. Not even Semi-Date shoes."
no subject
The lip gloss stays in her pocket. She'll sneak it back into Dawn's purse later, of course.
Glad to have the topic moving back to Dawn's 'Not-Date', Tosh stands and wanders over to another display. "They might be nice for a fancy party or something. You know, you can't really go wrong with basic black. Maybe you should stop thinking of them as date shoes, and start looking for 'girls night out' shoes."
no subject
Dawn shudders exaggeratedly. "Oh my God, no wonder you taste in shoes needs so much guidance! Black is good. 'Basic black' is sad. There should be colors, and nifty little bows and sparkles and pink lining. Shoes should never be basic, ever!" It's like the St. Crispin's Day Speech for shoes, Tosh. Dawn is getting passionate now. "You've been fooled into thinking shoes are for function, when really? Shoes are for fun."
no subject
"Dawn, until coming here, most of the shoes I bought filled the function of being able to run in the sewers. Shoes are for...having something on your feet that let you do whatever it is you need to be doing. And bows and sparkles are definitely for date shoes."
To illustrate her point, Tosh stretches out one foot to show off the sturdy black leather boots she's wearing. Low heels, definitely not purchased for 'fun'. At least they're good leather and have pointed toes?
no subject
"Tosh, who lied to you like this?" Dawn sighs sadly. "Now I have a mission. To make you see that shoes can be sewer runnable, and yet still awesome and sassy." A beat. "Okay, I move to strike 'sassy' from the record because seriously, I'm not 80 or a porn star. But poor word choice aside, why, Tosh? Functional and good do not have to equate boring!"
You've wakened the inner Cordy, Tosh. Beware.
no subject
Not since things ended with Tony, at any rate. "So let's just concentrate on what you need, yeah? You're the one going out with a girl for the first time, after all."
no subject
A quick kiss to Tosh's cheek, then Dawn is bouncing of in search of more shoes before Tosh can protest. "First date-date ever, actually. Sam and I never really did the traditional date thing." And no, Tosh, that isn't a little wistfulness in her tone so ignore it, thanks. "So these shoes need to be perfect."
no subject
She swallows past the sudden lump in her throat and smiles at Dawn's show of affection. And then a deep breath and back to the business of searching for shoes. "Got it. The perfect pair of Not-Date shoes." Which are so obviously for a date, and now Tosh thinks she sees what's needed. She disappears to the front of the store, and then returns with a pair of sandals (http://www.bluefly.com/Stuart-Weitzman-black-satin-Tempt-ankle-wrap-sandals/cat20460/214209600/detail.fly) that had caught her eye when they entered.
"Black, but not so basic. A little sparkly, nice high heels, strappy, and if you get a pedicure they're show off your toes nicely. What do you think?"
