missingthread
Summary; When Yuuki discovers that Yori is missing in the fog, and can't find her usual grumpy companion, Zero, she sets out to look for her friend alone. The sweet aroma of her blood however is no different than it's usual appealing scent back home, and draws some unwanted attention. Tasting delicious never was so dangerous, except when faced with a blood thirsty vampire...
Log;
Opening up the front door, Yuuki hesitated a moment. It was already dark, even though it wasn't horribly late in the evening. In the fog of the curse however, the young prefect couldn't see far ahead of her. The mist was almost thick enough to want to spill into the house. Squeezing her eyes shut tight, she shook her head vehemently.
This is stupid! A regular person wouldn't always hesitate to leave the house like this! Not in an emergency they wouldn't, even despite a curse.
With a forceful push, Yuuki ran out into the dark fog, clutching the communicator at her side. The entire time she was conscious of Artemis, tucked into a hidden compartment beneath her skirt. The broken up signal of her childhood friend had reached her earlier. Lost...out there alone in the fog. If Yori was lost in this, then Yuuki had no choice but to go out. She'd never leave a friend who could possibly be in trouble. Where is Zero, though...?
Struggling to stamp out the fear and doubt she felt, Yuuki attempted to breath evenly. It's just fog... Just because she was alone at the moment, it didn't mean someone...or something was going to attack her. At the age of sixteen now, she knew that she had to be much more mature than that. Knowing that she was supposed to though, didn't stop the rapid beating of her heart.

For a hunt...
Now, who to toy with first?
She can't see anything but she can smell and hear. Footsteps. Whispers. Sweet fragrances from potential victims. And yet, there is one that catches her attention. So sweet. So lovely. Marshika grins slowly as she flaps her wings and flies to that scent. That is blood she wants.
Flying over her target without being seen, she laughs then circles around. A pretty girl. The same pretty girl she's spoken to before.
How fun~

The farther Yuuki had wandered out into the dark fog, the easier it became to lose her sense of direction. It wasn't something she wanted to admit, but she wondered if she'd just made this situation worse. Now she wasn't positive of her location, and Yori was still out there. It had been a while now too, since she'd heard anything from the communicator.
"Yori-chan...?" She said quietly into it. Why she was whispering, Yuuki didn't know. The atmosphere simply felt as thought it called for quiet. Her whispered question however met no response, except a low static that her computer was beginning to make. Nervous, Yuuki shook it lightly before trying again. "Y-Yori...?" This time her voice shook a little.
Pausing, Yuuki gripped her arms before her. Physically she could feel as her pulse quickened in fear. Why was the computer acting up now, of all times? The moisture from the fog? Her breathing became heavy. This was bad...she was lost in the fog, and didn't have a way to communicate back with anyone else, all alone...
Where had Zero been? This was so stupid, she should have asked a neighbor, or someone else for help. Why had she thought she could do this on her own. There were so many things in the city, who knew what could have been lurking in the dark of the fog.
A low, amused laugh cut through the thick silence of the air. Eyes widening in immediate fear and surprise, Yuuki dropped the communicator, her hand flying to Artemis. It was out of it's hiding place and extended to full length in a matter of seconds.
"Who's there!?" She demanded. The firmness of the request however faltered with the nervous tremor in her voice. Turning in a circle slowly, her eyes strained to see something through the fog, anything that could give away where the voice had floated to her from out of nowhere. Teeth grit firmly, she tried to stop the shaking of her hands.

Circling...circling...
Then she opened her mouth to actually reply. Each sentence said in a new location.
"Oh little girl~ Would you like to play with me~? We could have such fun~" Marishka laughed more, the laugh becoming almost insane with amusement and sadistic pleasure.
"You smell divine~ Should we play hide and seek? You hide."
A long moment of silence followed that as she swooped just over the girl's head.
"I'll seek!"
no subject
"You smell divine~ Should we play hide and seek? You hide." Taking a step back, quietly, she tried to silence her breathing. It didn't last long before she gasped in surprise, a gust of wind blowing past her as the voice swept by from above. "I'll seek!"
"M-Mariska!?" Yuuki managed, falling back as tried to find a building, or something she could identify. At a huge disadvantage, she couldn't catch her bearings, being unable to smell or see. Unlike the vampire, the only senses she could go off of were sound and her ability to touch. The fear inside her spiked as she truly realized her situation.
S-She wants to eat me. A vampire's going to eat me...
This wasn't how she wanted to go. The memory of being lost alone in the snow, blood covering the white of the world around her floated through her mind, along with the gentle face of the boy who had rescued her. Kaname-sama... This time, there wasn't anyone else that would be out in a fog like this. Someone safe, please find Yori-chan...
"Mariska, I don't want to fight!" She'd been trained. It wasn't like her father hadn't taught her how to fight. She was a school guardian back at home. To be charged with such an important position, she couldn't allow herself to fall into fear when her own life was on the line.
The voice inside her head continued to whisper. Swallowing, she tried to block it out.
"You should just go...."

Marishka could smell it rolling off the girl and it sent shivers running down her body. It had been too long since she was last this excited. Far too long. And she wouldn't go away. Not now.
So, she laughed again then fell silent. Let the girl believe she was gone. A game of cat and mouse was so similar to hide and seek.
Landing, Marishka transformed to her more human self. Walking in silence, she stopped right behind her prey. A smile curled her lips almost in a cruel manner. Then, her hands shot out and shoved the small body. And once more her body was airborn, waiting to see if the child had fallen after being pushed several feet forward.
"This game is for us~ Let us play~ I love your scent. Rich with fear!"

Itai...
A dull pain stung her hands and knees, a few minor cuts and scratches pebbling her skin. No time to worry over that, Yuuki forced herself back up, swinging Artemis up and around her once more. Don't panic... she tried to plead with herself. Don't let yourself panic! Was she bleeding!? The fear that she might be was strong, she could barely tell in the dark of the night. If she was, that wouldn't strengthen the vampires attacks, would it?
"I'm not afraid!" If the vampire could believe that she was a capable fighter and meant business, then maybe she would second guess Yuuki being her prey.
I'M NOT! I don't want to be--
BA-DUMP BA-DUMP BA-DUMP
Yuuki could hear the sound of her heart as it thumped loudly in her chest.
I can't see her...how am I supposed to defend myself, if I can't even see her..? Ears straining, she attempted to listen for anything that might give the monster away. Artemis... She'd never left home without it, once it had been put within her possession. If she could get the monster in human disguise just once, then it might be enough to make her back off. Attempting to walk back toward the direction she thought she had originally come from quickly, while still making relatively little sound, she remained incredibly alert for any sound or movement that would give her attacker away.

"You smell beautiful!"
More.
More.
More!
Diving again, her foot grabbed the back of the girl's jacket and lifted her into the air. A few feet up, she threw her. Bruises. Marishka wanted bruises. Cuts. Scrapes. And blood. Swooping past the girl's head, she cackled in her ear.

Crashing to the ground, she also hit the side of a small wall jutting out of the regular smoothness of the pavement.. Alarmed, her mind fuzzily tried to make sense of the watery noise in front of her. Dizzy, she knew that if she simply stayed on the ground, she wouldn't stand a chance. A loud cackle filled the air that sent shudders down the school prefect's spine.
M-Monster--! Gritting her teeth, Yuuki swung Artemis up hard into the air. She felt as it made contact with the creature swooping above her. An electric current immediately shot through the staff, and she could hear as it sizzled, contact with the vampire's skin having been made.
This was the fountain, she realized. The watery noise before her had been coming from the small water spouts. Nothing in this area would be open this time of night, on a curse day like this. She tried to remember if there had been any residents living directly here in the square. Would anyone be able to hear them?
Ignoring the new bruises knotting her skin, she stood back into a defensive position once more. "I am not helpess...!"
no subject
Now things were much more fun.
"Little girl has a bite."
Her appearance melted back into a woman. She could see the child clearly and she knew the child would barely be able to make her out.
"You are more fun than I thought! More bruises and blood you need though!"
no subject
"You're insane."
Artemis had made contact with her skin. It could hurt, but had it made any real damage? Yuuki preferred Artemis to a gun. It was her weapon, and what she was most accustomed to. Guns only had one purpose. In this moment though, she would have felt better having something that aided her in long distance combat.

Marishka laughed and moved faster than the eye could follow to appear behind the girl. "Why not playful? Master calls me that. His playful bride."
Just for the girl to see, she transformed and grabbed the weapon with her hands. It stung but she could ignore that in favor of that throwing her prey into the fountain. She could keep the weapon. It kept things interesting.
Her skin healed once more as she took to the air.
"Feared by villagers! Feared! And now...you smell of it too! Fear and...blood~"

There's no way...I can't keep up with that. She's too fast. The thought was hallow and full of fear. Feeling around blindly a moment in the water, her fingers tightened once more around the smooth silver of her weapon.
I'm going to be eaten...
That thought was purely the most terrifying of all. It was suffocating, overwhelming all her senses. Frightened...I'm really frightened. Kaname-sama--! Z-Zero!? Trying to hide the unsteady wobbling of her feet as she rose again her breathing was rapid.
BA-DUMP BA-DUMP BA-DUMP
The places her skin had been pieced by the rough handling stung. She knew she was bleeding, most likely further encouraging the vampire's rapid assaults. Her only chance was to get away, but if she turned her back for even a second...
Backing away from her, without removing her from her eye-sight, Yuuki clutched her weapon. It was her only lifeline, and even that was hardly stopping the blood thirsty beast. She didn't know any of Marishka's weaknesses.

Sweeping down, she lifted her into the air. One long clawed finger slicing that sweet cheek. Then she dropped her.
The blood smelled wonderful on her finger. Sticking it in her mouth, she cleaned it off. So...good. It could be the best she'd ever tasted. Her eyes flashed gold as she looked down to where she'd dropped the girl. More. She wanted more. And wanted it soon.
"Sweet scents. Sweet tastes. I could devour you now. But, the game isn't over. Blood just rushes when the toy is wounded."
no subject
I'm going to die....e-even here in the city, I don't want to die...! On her hands and knees she stared at the ground in fear, her body trembling. The small gash across her cheek burned, and she could taste some of her own blood from when she’d bit her tongue upon impact. It wasn’t anything at all like the vampires back at the academy, vampires that wanted peace. She’s going to eat!
BA-DUMP BA-DUMP BA-DUMP
"S-STOP!" The vampire swooped down a fourth time and as she began to lift the wounded prefect into the air, Yuuki swung the weapon over her head with as much force as she could muster, hitting the 'bride' square across the shins. The electric wave that sparked, along with the strength behind the blow was enough to get the kyuuketsuki to release her.
Falling, Yuuki’s legs wobbled as she struck the pavement again. “Vampire…!” Could anyone hear her? She didn’t want anyone innocent to get mixed up in this fight. It was too much for her alone, though. She needed to get away, or hide. The trail of her blood though would give away any route of escape. Her heart continued to pound.
Running at full speed, Yuuki blindly raced down the street. Artemis hitting a building ahead of her, she moved along the edge of that, still unable to see in the thick of the fog. Feeling a corner, she rounded that, assuming she was in-between two buildings. Anything that could possibly throw the vampire off, she needed to try and take. Feeling along the wall, she tried to once more still her breathing, searching for some place to sneak into, run to, or hide.
How would she be able to disguise her scent, though…?

Once she was healed, she landed and started following after the girl. Little drops of blood. Like breadcrumbs in that story Master told her once. Humming to herself, she followed the scent. The blood still lingered on her tongue. It was so delicious and now she hungered for more.
"Sweet little girl~ Why do you flee? Are you really playing now? Such fun!"
Marishka's footsteps were audible now. Another little fearful sound to add to the danger of the fog.
"You're all alone. Lost and frightened. Come play, little one. I'll take good care of you."
One footstep.
Then another.
Then another.
"Come out~"

There isn't anywhere to hide...!
Rounding another corner, she moved as quickly as she could, without making noise. Feeling her hand brush a door on one of the buildings, she automatically felt for the nob. Lightly turning it, there wasn't any surprise in that it was locked. Another wave of fear coursed through her. The light footsteps continued to draw closer.
Desperate, she began to panic. Hiding simply meant that she'd be found, unless she could get far enough away. Foot lightly bumping into something sitting outside the back of one of the shops, she heard it slosh a moment. Worried, she looked back behind her. The foot steps were still on the other side of the building however. Whatever the liquid was, it had a peculiar smell, and she realized as some of it tipped out the edge of the bucket, that it was oil.
W-Would it do anything? She wished she had matches. There wasn't any reason for her to normally carry something like that, though. Reluctantly switching Artemis to her left hand, she lifted the oil carefully into her right. Gas, oil, whatever it was, it smelled flammable. Even without a match she hoped that in eyes, or over skin, that it would at least have a similar affect on a vampire as it would a human, and possibly slow her down.
Don't panic...Flat against the wall, waiting for Marishka to round the corner, Yuuki held the oil tightly in one hand, while trying to balance Artemis in the crook of her arm. When she rounded the corner, she'd throw the liquid over the vampire's head, and make an attack with Artemis. If lucky...the weapon could possibly create a spark, though she wasn't sure. At the very least, the combination might at least delay her, and give the prefect the chance of escape.

Loudly Marishka laughed as she took her time in the pursuit. One step at a time. There was no need for anything faster. She'd get there. And then, it would be time to tear the girl apart. Feed on her. Let that blood slide down her throat.
But, what is that sound? Liquid? Hm...what did the girl kick? They are nowhere near a place that would have holy water.
Step by step.
"Will you keep hiding?"
Around the corner. That's where the girl had gone. Marishka would be there soon. Already she could picture what she'd do. How her fingers would hold that body still as her teeth tore into flesh.
As blood...oh that sweet blood...bathed her skin. Warm and wet. Master would love the smell of it on her.
Perhaps he'd give attention only to her. Yes, she loved her sister but solo attention for her Master. By everything unholy, she'd do whatever she could to get it. And then, they could make children. Here in the City, they could find a way to make them live too.

Holding the bucket as steady as possible, she remained completely still. The footsteps were nearly there. It was obvious Marishka wasn't in a rush, that she was confident in her abilities to catch Yuuki. Closing her eyes, the guardian took a silent breath. Any second...
"Marishka---!" The moment Yuuki knew her target was within sight, Yuuki threw the thick oil over the vampire, dropping the bucket to the ground once she'd done so. Immediately she attacked, rising Artemis high into the air to catch the stunned vampire by surprise. Her aim was dead on as she struck, hitting the bride square across the face. Still at the advantage, the bride reeling from the attack, Yuuki hit again and again. The sparks from the rod crackled crisply, and the vampire flew backwards, outside of Yuuki's reach.
Run-! The fuukiiin had no idea how long the oil and Artemis's attacks would last, but this was her only chance. It was the only delay she would have. Taking off in the opposite direction again, Yuuki ran at top speeds. Her adrenaline allowed her to move more quickly than normal. Artemis held before her readily for attack, she used it to also guide her, so that she didn't run into or hit any unseen trees or walls. She needed to get away, and to get help. If that hadn't slowed Marishka down enough to help her, than Yuuki didn't know what else to do.
no subject
"Too bad...so sad...But now, your life is MINE!"
Another shriek and she was after the girl. She was running. The footsteps were audible to her ears. Feet pounding on the ground. Breath heavy from the labor. That blood still dripping.
"I want you! The game is ending, little girl!"
no subject
Teeth clenched, Yuuki knew that she didn't have a chance of outrunning her. The voice was already on top of her, and there was no where else to go. The only option was to turn around and fight. If her back was to her, then it would be all to easy for Marishka to take her out.
BA-DUMP BA-DUMP BA-DUMP
Spinning on her heals, Yuuki raised Artemis in the air and waited. Stop trembling... She tried to beg of her body, as her hands shook. That thought kept spinning through her mind, over and over and over.
BA-DUMP BA-DUMP BA-DUMP
At the very least she was going to try and fight for her life.
no subject
"You are mine!"
Cackling, she slammed her body into the smaller one she was after.
"Bruise! Break! Bleed!"
no subject
I can't push her off-! The weight was too heavy, and no matter how Yuuki moved she was thoroughly restrained. “N-NO! “ The panicked sound escaped her lips as she fully realized her situation. She could feel as the vampire’s hands worked to still her and the pain she felt cushioned against the ground, and her previous wounds. “STOP!” The sheer terror she felt at knowing what was going to happen next overwhelmed her. Her pulse speed out of control, and she could barely hear past the blood rushing through her ears. The beat of her heart was almost enough to drown out the vampire’s laughs.
no subject
"Hush. No one can hear you."
Marishka's eyes turned bright yellow and her fangs grow out over her lips.
"I'll kill you quickly. Tear you apart."
Slowly, she leaned down towards the girl's throat...

He'd noticed the absence of both his roommates earlier in the day, but hadn't realized that what he'd assumed was just a overcast and dreary day was actually a dangerous curse. That wasn't the only stupid assumption he'd made today either. He'd assumed that since both of his roommates were not home, that meant that they had remained together.
When he'd heard from Yori he'd quickly realized that Yuuki was out in the fog by herself. Knowing she wouldn't venture out there without good reason, he figured she'd probably found out about what had happened to Yori and thought that she'd be able to find her on her own.
Lifting his gun, Zero aimed at the fog with only the help of his instincts. The scent of blood and the feeling of a vampire in the air the only clue to help him before he fired. The spell triggered with glittering light, cutting the fog as it moved but the further away it moved the quicker the fog absorbed the sight. Within moments the spell disappeared from sight, leaving Zero hoping that whatever human had fallen as that vampires prey was helped a little. A high pitched squeal surprised him seconds later as he realized Bloody Rose had in fact hit it's mark.
Following the sound, Zero nearly fell over an unconscious human on the ground that was surrounded by the ash remains of a vampire scattered around her. Bending down, he lifted the girl in his arms, trying his best to ignore the cloying scent of her injuries as they assaulted him. Making his way to the sidewalk, Zero was determined to find a safe building for the girl to rest in until someone could safely return her home.
Finding a closed diner that was abandoned as the girl became conscious, Zero pulled the transmitter from his pocket before making placing a call to help for someone to assist the girl that could safely venture out into City on a day like today. Once someone he trusted and recognised responded, Zero ignored the girls questions but informed her that someone would be there to assist her soon before venturing back outside.
Instantly a familiar scent assaulted him. Yuuki! She's bleeding! Taking off at a run in the direction of the metallic scent, the presence of a vampire wasn't far away from her. Still unable to see either of them, the sound of the creatures voice cut through the mist and Zero didn't even think, just fired in the general direction as a warning.

Head pounding from where she'd hit the cement hard, Yuuki immediately backed away, moving to rise. Wounded, she moved on adrenaline alone, stumbling as she stood, before catching her balance with Artemis. Fear still coursed through her battered body. The feel of the vampire's breath that had tickled her throat, and the clawed fingertips that had dug into her flesh to restrain her crept across her skin. Shuddering, while feeling sick, she realized that she'd been but a hairsbreadth away from death.
"Z-Zero--!?" She asked in weary shock. In the night fog, she couldn't see anything, or judge how far away her most trusted companion was from her. The mark that had temporarily lit the sky however had definitely been from Zero's weapon, Bloody Rose. Shaking as she held Artemis back before her defensively, she ignored the cuts and puncture holes littering her arms, and the warmth soaking her side. Protectively, she attempted to walk quickly backwards, toward the direction she thought he was in. All the while, she desperately kept her ears and eyes open for Marishka.
"You f-oun---" Stumbling over her feet, she lost her balance and fell back down onto the pavement. Once again using Artemis as a support, she lifted herself back up, holding the weapon out in order to defend herself. "She's dangerous", she tried to warn. Marishka wasn't the same, Yuuki didn't think, from the types of Level E's they had in their own world. Artemis had done hardly anything. Bloody Rose though, it was built to kill...

Hissing, she sniffed the air. A boy. A boy had shot her. He was dangerous. That pain had been like what she felt when the Hunter killed her with arrows dipped in holy water.
Marishka let out a loud scream as she moved through the air. His weapon, she'd have to pay close attention to it. She would not let him seriously harm her with that. And worse, he was defending her prey. Her prey that still dripped blood that maddened her senses.
"Is this the child friend you spoke of, girl?!"
no subject
Things weren't the same here in the city, most of the vampires were like him, former humans. They often held powers of nobles, lived like Level D's and hunted prey like Level E's. The most frightening part he'd discovered, were pure bloods were pretty much non-existent in their home worlds, a vampire created held the power to create more vampires.
The folklore and myths from Zero's world were reality for these monsters. His world was surprisingly peaceful and civil in comparison to the places they came from. The whole concept disgusted him to think about, that they reproduced by creating more of the disgusting creatures from humans, just as they'd been created.
Never taking his aim off where he felt the vampire lingering in the sky, Zero moved toward the scent of blood that still rolled off Yuuki, determined to find her.
It was the sound of her voice that calmed his panicky nerves. He hadn't realized how upset he'd been until the sound eased the unconscious fear in his heart. "I...I found you...I was worried I wouldn't find you," he swallowed deeply, relief easing into him slowly yet his adrenaline still high that he never took his weapon from the monster in the air. "What were you thinking?"
no subject
“I....I didn’t think... Yori-chan was missing, so I–” It wasn’t like a typical person wouldn’t have done the same. Normal people could walk outside whenever they felt like it. She’d never been able to leave home however, without a measure of fear gripping her heart. This once for her friend though, she’d been worried. If someone was in danger, she didn’t know how to just leave them. Yori-chan....Yori-chan!
“Z-Zero–! S-She could still be out here...!”
If she was out there, experiencing the same kind of horror Yuuki had. Yori...her friend didn’t have any kind of training, like the school prefect! If something’s happened–!
Reaching back for her friend, one of Yuuki’s free hands tried to find Zero in the dark. She was still shaking. The beat of her heart was erratic and uneven, and she still felt vulnerable. The fact that she was no longer alone however, was a tremendous relief.

"Zero protects you for now, little girl~ But, he doesn't protect Yori~"
Cackling like before she took off through the air. If she didn't find this other then she would return home to recover. But, she'd have that girl someday. That blood was too delicious to pass up.
Then she'd kill Zero. Or she'd kill him first.
Oh the possibilities~

"She's safe, someone named Lyra went and picked her up. She called to let us know she was staying with her tonight." Zero said, trying to reassure the younger girl. "I thought you were with her..."
Never letting go of his weapon, his attention stayed focused on the direction the vampire had taken off in. She was out of range, but he wanted to be alert if she returned to attack. The scent of Yuuki's blood was surrounding the entire area, which even if Marishka didn't return didn't mean she wasn't a beacon of light for any other vampire to seek out.
"We need to get you home and cleaned up," he said, knowing that any other vampire could include himself if they weren't careful.
no subject
"Zero..." If it wasn't for him, she would have definitely died.
Hands reaching out, she grabbed onto Zero's jacket. Everything was quickly catching up with her. The wound on her side was bleeding profusely, and now the pain seemed to redouble, as though feeling was inching back into her body. Her arms and legs were scratched and bruised, several wounds marring her normally smooth skin, and blood tricked down the back of her neck from a head wound she'd received, after hitting the cement too hard. Unable to keep her balance, now that the immediate danger was over, she sagged against his chest.
"Thank you..." She whispered, trying but failing to keep the tears out of her voice.
