The evening had proven beneficial to him; the darkness had the funny effect of keeping most inside, which certainly worked to his advantage. Even if he were untouchable, as much as he himself had proven, there was always the off chance that there could be something awry. There was no room for any error in judgement, and certainly not now when he hadn't yet achieved his goal. There was always the risk, but it was more of a matter of reducing them. The evening guaranteed a low percentage, indeed.

There was always something about an evening stroll in the very late winter that calmed one's nerves, and even after a few moments it had been satisfactory enough that the puffs of smoke rising from that pipe had increased the further he had ventured. He hadn't come across any people then, and of course he had hoped it would remain that way. It didn't matter, he finally decided-- so long as the people he encountered had no malicious intent saved for him, it wouldn't matter. The reduction of risk had mandated that he bring a cleverly concealed and poisoned pin; one never knew, after all, and it saved some trouble.

Just when he had thought that he would not come across another soul, a figure suddenly appeared in the distance ahead-- another one turning the corner onto the sidewalk a few metres before even that other. They were, thankfully, unrecognisable, as the street lights showed him, yet it was no reason not to keep his guard up. After all, the unexpected could and often did occur in this city; to be off one's guard was to invite death. Even he couldn't afford that gamble,
