[ooc: "It's a field!" For more references this is the poly_tldr tourney post, this is the 1st IC tourney post, and this is the 2nd IC tourney post! Consolidating into one log instead of two, so label subject lines accordingly whether it's "Match: Spy vs. Spy" or "Spectator~" or "Evening Party: Open" etc. etc. Have fun!]

"A bar. With burlesque performes on stage, music, and all kinds of alcohol I could get in this place. I had something similar back home. It proved to be a very good escape. I think..." I think you saw it... NO, he was not going to say that. "I think people could use a place to escape here as well."

He analyzed Jake's words. "Aliens? How exactly do you define an alien when you're in a city between worlds?" he asked curiously.

"Oh, right." He got the idea that what he'd seen in their combined dream was what Chuck meant, but didn't catch Chuck's hesitation as meaning anything. "Good idea."

And at that, Jake was stumped. "I'm not exactly sure." He replied, his voice slightly higher than usual. His confused sentence ended almost like a question and with a quiet laugh. "It's not the same here in the City, more of a research thing. It's really not boring, though."

"I'll take your word for it," he told Jake, slightly amused by his reaction to the question. "Though I suppose it's a good thing your job here's mostly research. I'm not sure getting a call in the middle of the night because Alien's on the loose would be good for your social life..."

"Yeah, but there's a lot of stuff here that needs investigatin', so it's not just books and paperwork." He got hives when there was too much paperwork, so thank God for that. "Actually, I think my social life got better with the job. Mickey always made sure of that."

Chuck frowned. The name sounded familiar.

"Mickey?" he asked. "Black guy, currently barely standing?" Chuck looked around. "I think I met him once or twice. You guys work together?"

Why did he want to know that?

"Yeah, that's him." Jake pushed back the myriad of feelings, most of them not positive, he felt toward his 'friend' right now. "We're from the same place. Kind of. He's my best friend."

Chuck frowned at looked at Jake, curiously.

"You don't sound very enthusiastic about him..." He remarked casually, curious as to why.

"I'm not. Not right now." He was still angry that Mickey'd never told him about his future, maybe irrationally so. It was also something better to direct his feelings toward than the actual idea that he'd be dead soon. He really couldn't be angry at him. "We're still friends, though."

Watching Jake talk about Mickey, Chuck couldn't help but to think about Nate and their rocky friendship. "I know what you mean," he said quietly.

"Yeah?" He wasn't really surprised. Somehow, people always had those friends with which their relationship would always be complicated. "Like how?"

Chuck looked at Jake and imagined telling him everything. How he slept with Blair, how Nate found out, how he never seemed to be able to trust Chuck again... How suddenly Chuck's way with people seemed to be against what Nate believed in...

"There were some misunderstandings, lost trust... We never seemed to recover from that."

Have an understatement. "Nothing that could compare to hunting aliens."

Jake snorted. "Hey, it's not as cool as it sounds. Somehow, everything seems to go wrong, and you find yourself ankle deep in purple goo." He gave the well-put together Chuck a once over. Somehow, he couldn't imagine Chuck doing anything like that.

Chuck snorted and pointed a finger at Jake. "Make sure to tell your bosses not to put you in charge of PR. You, my dear friend, suck at it."

Jake had to laugh at that. "I'm just bein' honest. And that's not the worst thing I could tell you..."

Chuck turned his whole body towards Jake and motioned at him. "By all means," he said with a smirk. "Enlighten me." Alright, so he might've been a bit curious... Not that he would admit that. Not unless he had to.

"Well..." Jake thought."This one time, there was this..." He made a wide hand motion, a little excited. "giant..." He paused. "I don't even know what it was, it was like a fish and a giraffe had babies, but every once in a while it would sneeze, 'cause it had a space flu or somethin' an' a few of us ended up covered in alien snot. Which we never could get out." By this point Jake was fairly animated, quite different then he'd been before.
