Log; Ongoing
When; Tuesday evening.
Rating; PG-13 for some upsetting themes.
Characters; Gwen Cooper (
protect_them), Owen Harper (
wankersometimes) and Ianto Jones (
king_coffee)
Summary; Ianto hasn't known the full story for a long time. Gwen needs to tell him.
Log;
There was a lot about the situation that Ianto didn't know. He didn't know that Jack was in the City, and had been for a few days, and although he knew that the 456 had been defeated, and that all the children were safe, he didn't know exactly how that had been achieved.
While he would usually want to know, he'd had a lot of other things on his mind, and as he'd been sleeping a lot and concentrating on getting better, he hadn't thought to ask.
But as time went on, he began to think like he usually did. And he began to wonder.
For that moment, though, he was sitting up in the bed - yes, he'd refused to relinquish those pillows - and attempting a crossword. He was rather pleased that the words were getting away from him less and less, and he could complete it.

"Well now, back to paperwork already?"
no subject
"I wish," he said, snorting softly and rolling his eyes, "nobody will let me do even the slightest bit of work around here."
no subject
She smiled faintly and settled on the edge of his bed.
"There's not as much to do right now, so you're not missing out."
no subject
Ianto was aware that it was a bad habit of his, but he wasn't inclined to change it any time soon. He enjoyed showing his displeasure about things, and a roll of the eyes was a good way to do it.
"Oh, there's plenty of Library things I could be doing, but nobody will give me that work."
no subject
A chuckle colored her voice and once it was out, she realized it wasn't such a common sound anymore. Still smiling a little, she shook her head and leaned closer to see what he was doing.
"You'll be doing Library things soon enough. Promise. You're really coming along well."
no subject
Having finished the crossword, he folded the paper in half carefully, and then put that and the pen next to his pillow. "Owen's a git, anyway. He won't take out the catheter."
no subject
She fought back a laugh.
no subject
He could do fifteen, and he gave Gwen's near laugh a suspicious tilt of his eyebrow.
no subject
"He's just making sure you're well enough. You know Owen. He might be a prat but he's bloody brilliant as a medic. We were lucky he was here to treat you in time."
no subject
He picked at the blankets covering him, looking for something to do with his hands.
no subject
".... right now, it's best you rest."
no subject
"Gwen," he said, after a pause, "what's happened?"
no subject
"... there are things you don't know, Ianto. You know part of the situation back home, but not all of it. Yes, the 456 were defeated, but... the cost was high."
no subject
"Exactly how high is 'high'?"
no subject
Her hands knotted together as her stomach twisted. She hadn't wanted to be the one to tell him this. She'd prayed not to be the one, but... so be it. She was Torchwood and sometimes that meant telling the hard truths.
"... you came back to the City as you were dying. Owen was able to save you here, but at home, you and everyone else in Thames House succumbed. Jack, too. The government was forced to agree to give the children to the 456."
She paused, remembering the horror of those days.
"Jack and I separated and he was able to stop the 456 by creating a... feedback loop using... a child. His grandson, Stephen was there, so Jack... chose to use him to destroy the 456."
Her voice had faded to a soft murmur as if the lack of volume could negate what had happened.
".... he sacrificed him to save everyone. His own grandson..."
no subject
But the news about Stephen? Ianto'd had no idea.
For a minute, he sat there in shock, staring at his hands.
He had to clear his throat twice before he could talk. "I... I know Jack. He wouldn't have done that unless there was absolutely no other choice. You say Stephen was there... that means there was no other children anywhere near."
He looked back up at Gwen.
"He had to sacrifice the life of one child to save that of millions. And the only child around to use was his own grandson..." Oh god. He couldn't even begin to think how absolutely awful that had been for the man.
no subject
"The losses he suffered broke him, I think. He... disappeared for a while while I went on to dig up what was left of the Hub. Months after he left, I was able to see him. I had no idea it was for him to tell me he was leaving for good. There... isn't really any Torchwood left, Ianto. Not now. Just me."
Her own losses had always been kept out of her thoughts, but they were still there and she still ached from them.
"... I never wanted to have to tell you this, but... you need to know. Especially now."
no subject
"I would have been angry at you if you didn't tell me," Ianto said with a short laugh that he didn't really feel. Ianto couldn't imagine, losing your lover - Ianto thought, no he was sure that Jack felt that loss, as much as he didn't want Jack to hurt like that - your grandson, and oh god, his daughter must hate him...
no subject
She forced her hands still, swallowing hard.
"..... he came back to the City, but he's... not the same. He's still sorting things out, evne though it's been a while for him."
no subject
He started from the bed.
"I have to see him. Where is he?"
no subject
"He doesn't want to see any of us right now, Ianto. I talked to him earlier and.. he said he needs time and he agrees that you need more rest."
no subject
"OWEN," he bellowed after a second's pause, "OWEN."
no subject
She reached out to pull him back in.
"He asked for space and we need to give it to him. If you go running to find him, you'll get sick again or he'll go into hiding again. Right now, it's best for him to be away from us."
no subject
He shot Gwen a dirty look for her troubles. "Oh, but you get to speak to him, right?" He shrugged off the touch again.
"Let me guess, he's in the TARDIS. He's completely predictable sometimes." It was getting to the point where he was going to pull out all the wires and tubes himself. "OWEN GET YOUR ARSE HERE NOW," he yelled again.
no subject
"Ianto Jones. You need to back down now. If you don't, I'll have Owen sedate you until you listen to reason."
The gentle expression was gone from her face, replaced by one she'd learned from her time with Torchwood.
Stone.

Yank. Out went his IV, and he pulled the heart monitor clip off his finger before chucking it hard across the room.
Yes. He was having a bit of a tantrum.
"Let go of me." And he sat up again. It as a struggle, but he did it.
[ooc: Okay with Owen jumping in after this? Figured the flatline from the monitor would grab his attention]
no subject
He burst through the clinic door to find Ianto struggling with Gwen, the I.V. line dangling and spilling saline all over the floor, heart monitor tab beside it and all the machines wailing.
"What the bloody hell is going on here?"
no subject
"Sedate him, Owen. I'll explain why later."
no subject
"Jack's in the City, and none of you told me," he said angrily, knocking Gwen's arm away again, "and I swear if you sedate me Owen, I will make your time here in the City hell. I want this catheter out."
no subject
Not the time. Ianto was going to undo all his work if he kept flailing around like that. Owen grabbed at his syringe pack and make a quick decision.
"Right, Gwen I need you to hold him down for this. Ianto, that's no way to treat a pregnant lady."

"Get off" he ground out.
no subject
In his condition, it wouldn't take very long to come into effect.
"Gwen, you okay?"

The whole I.V. would have to be done, and another bag hung. He snarled while he sorted it out.
"Mind telling me what the fuck that was about?"
no subject
"Jack's in the City and has been since Friday. I told Ianto what was going on.... all of it."
no subject
"You told him? Well done, PC Cooper. Now he's gonna be bloody impossible until he half kills himself trying to go see Jack. I can't keep him sedated 24/7, you know."
no subject
".... he would've found out soon enough. Kyle saw Jack and I knew it was just a matter of time."
no subject
"Just because he can blink at you and talk, doesn't mean he's well. The idiot can't even sit up for half an hour at a time, and his temp spiked to 103 today. If he tries to leave the clinic, he'll relapse. Do I have to remind you that him immune system is absolute shit right now?"
no subject
She finally looked up, face blank and tight and almost eerily a mirror to a familiar expression that Jack had worn before.
"Keep him as safely sedated as you can."
no subject
"We need to lock down the room. And you can explain to Kyle why Ianto can't have any visitors anymore."

It was all such a bloody mess. Why the hell was Jack playing keep away when he knew they were here and needed him? And why did Gwen think this was something Ianto needed to know right now? They all knew what Ianto was like. Stupidly devoted and stubbornly loyal, to point of insanity. With Jack in the picture, there'd be no reasoning with him. They would just have to keep him restrained and sedated and probably set his progress a whole week back doing it too.
He glared at the unconscious man and tightened the restraints. This was all they needed. Yet another disaster.
