Summary; Rubedo wakes up Sakura at the start of sensory deprivation day.
Log;
It had been a mostly uneventful day, really. He had spent most of it with Sakura, trying to entertain her so that she didn't get bored. The place was now decorated with a ridiculous amount of flowers and various presents he had gotten her. He was still hesitant about letting her leave by herself, but he didn't mind accompanying her to stores or restaurants.
Always better than his OWN cooking.
Currently he was trying to get to sleep. Sharing a room with Sakura meant he needed to be quiet at night now, so he was reading one of the many books he'd purchased while in the City, his lamp on the low setting. The suddenness of everything just blacking out startled him enough to make the book slip from his hands and onto the floor.
Staying quiet for the moment, he sat up and looked over to where he knew his lamp was, and fumbled around to try and turn it back on. It didn't work. He sat in silence, trying not to panic, before checking again two minutes later. The bulb was still hot. What did that mean? It was still on?
Utterly confused, he carefully climbed out of bed. He didn't want to wake up Sakura, but knowing the way this City was, he was highly concerned. This wasn't a power outage. If this was a curse, he wanted to know if it was affecting Sakura.
Feeling guilty, he carefully sat on the edge of her bed, then reached out to carefully touched what he HOPED was a safe region. Relieved that it was just her arm, he gave a little shake. "Sakura?"
Sakura rustled in bed, and turned over, looking up at Rubedo. Her eyes opened wide as she realized that she was surrounded by a deafening silence. The noise that should have been accompanied by her turning over hadn't been there. Did that mean she couldn't speak? Her mind filled with indistinct memories of a time when she couldn't- but she pushed them to the side, as, with a tremor, she attempted to say, "Rubedo? ... I ... can't hear you. Or anything. Can you hear me?"
She couldn't hear anything? That was definitely different from what Rubedo was experiencing. "What? Of course I can hear you. You can't hear me?"
Shit, this was no good. He tried to slow down what he was saying. "Can you see?"
Sakura stared at him. His mouth was moving, but she couldn't see what he was trying to say.
He looked like he was trying to slow down so she could lipread. She was terrible at lipreading. Before.... she hadn't been able to....
"I'm sorry, Rubedo. I can't lipread very well. I can see you trying to speak... I'm sorry."
She bowed her head down, looking at her hands clasped around the light blanket she held. She looked back up. "You can ... hear me, right?"
With a frustrated sigh, he inched closer and reached out again, slipping his hand towards her lap. When he touched a thigh, he was quick to move it to one of her hands with a muttered apology. Gently, he took her hand and let it rest on his leg, then began to very slowly write on her palm with his fingertip. Fortunately he didn't need to see for this. Being an 'advanced human' as some liked to call him had it's pluses, for sure.
I can hear you. This must be a curse involving the five senses.
Sakura had no problems translating the writing on her palm. By the way he was groping around as though he were in the dark, something must be affecting him as well.
"Rubedo... Can you see?"
With a nasty scowl, obviously more than just a little displeased, he shook his head rather abruptly. Then, just in case she didn't get it, he wrote out, I'm mad!
Yes, he wrote the exclamation point.
Sakura sat up and pulled back at the scowl on his face, and the ferocity of the headshake. The message on her palm just reinforced the idea.
"Rubedo...."
"I'm sorry.... you can't see..."
The brunette was fast getting used to the bizarre sensation of speaking without hearing herself speak, but seeing Rubedo so angry was another matter entirely.
"It's not...so bad, for me...I suppose."
He had to grin a bit, though, and wrote out as quickly as he could without leaving her behind. Your voice sounds a little odd, though. And you're speaking loudly. You never speak loudly.
Rubedo had always thought she had a nice voice, but he usually got distracted by her cute looks or personality to specifically notice that. Now he had no choice. Of course, he wasn't about to write that out.
Damn primitive City. He needed to hunt down some equipment to remedy this for the day, but how was he supposed to shop when he couldn't see? Plus it was still the middle of the night...not even dawn yet.
"Oh." Sakura tried putting her other hand up to her throat to feel the vibrations, and tried to think quieter.
Rubedo still held her hand, and looked towards her blindly. It was very odd to look at someone who couldn't see you but was still looking as though he could. She stifled an ironic smile, to see him in his pajamas, and her still tousled from sleep, both trying to work things out.
"Is that better?"
He nodded and cracked a grin. Honestly, he didn't mind so much. Her manner of speech was usually much more reserved, so it was actually somewhat hilarious to hear her yelling a bit. It would waste a lot of time to explain all of that, though, and he didn't want to offend her, so he didn't bother.
Instead Rubedo wrote out something else. Sorry for waking you. You should go back to sleep. Damnit, he couldn't read himself to sleep now.
Sakura was relieved to see him smile again. Just a minute ago he'd been so upset. But it seemed he was feeling better.
...go back to sleep.
"...Are you going to be ok, Rubedo? If you can't see? I don't want you to hurt yourself...."
Rubedo looked almost offended at the suggestion that he would hurt himself just because he couldn't see, but he knew she was just concerned. With a nod, he wrote out, Fine. I just won't go outside. You might have to make food, though. Sorry.
Sakura looked at him, and, convinced that he was telling the truth about not hurting himself, settled back a bit.
"That's all right. I can make the food today- you don't need to hear that much to cook, anyhow.... I'll make sure to make something you can eat easily."
Rubedo really needed to let her go back to sleep, but she was so distracting, and comforting at times like these. She really helped him keep his cool.
He didn't have to think for too long before responding with, I'd eat anything cooked by you.
Sakura smiled and brushed his hair back from his face. "I'll try and make it really good then."
The touch startled him since he hadn't seen it coming. He'd heard the whisper of fabric moving, and sensed something close, but hadn't known quite what to expect. In reaction, a blush hinted at his cheeks, and his shoulders tensed up out of sudden embarrassment.
"J--jeez, you..." He started to continue, only to remember she couldn't hear him. Blinking a few times, he wrote out again, It'll be great. Don't worry. Go to sleep.
Sakura glanced up at him, and saw that he'd reddened, and had been rattled enough to try and speak. But he caught himself, and wrote out on her hand again. Sakura missed the first few letters watching him, but caught the gist, and smiled again.
"All....all right." She snuggled down under the covers again, letting her hand stay put until Rubedo released it, and watched him drowsily, as she nestled down into the bed.
Rubedo tilted his head, feeling her move from the way her hand shifted, and listening to the sheets rustle as she settled in. Not wanting to disturb her going to sleep, he thought of returning to his bed, but she hadn't let go of his hand yet, and he wasn't going to make the first move.
Instead he scooted off the bed to crouch down on the ground beside it, resting his cheek against his arm and keeping a gentle grip on her more delicate hand, fingertip drifting along her arm this time.
Sweet dreams.
