Truffles

When; 2010-08-14, in the afternoon.
Rating; PG for possible language
Characters; Di Di Malloy ([livejournal.com profile] bufferprincess), Alester Siddons ([livejournal.com profile] no_defender)
Summary; Having meet a new friend in each other, Di Di has offered to give Alester cooking lessons, more specifically how to make truffles. Everyone loves truffles.
Log;

Di Di strolled along the side walk as normal. She was in casual clothing, but looking put together and nice. It was on a rare occasion that she was making fiends here. Well that was the same thing for her time at home, but she had managed a few more here. Her newest one seemed rather cute. She grinned as she thought that, turning the corner to have Cafe Juliet in her sights. It was kind of funny that the first thing that got them talking was coffee.

Stopping in front of the store she looked around, she knew what he looked like from the network, but she didn't spot him right off. Oh well, perhaps saying his name would help. "Alester?" She ventured.

Alester didn't have any idea what Di Di looked like, but at least he did know how to find Cafe Juliet, and the fact that there was a young woman standing outside looking confused gave him a pretty good clue. He was dressed in a way that was very unusual for him--though probably quite ordinary for Di Di--in blue jeans and a black button-down shirt, because it seemed to be the kind of thing most people here wore and his own clothes had been somewhat ruined by their experience in the fountain.

It helped that the girl--probably around his youngest half-brother's age--was calling his first name. Everyone was so informal here, but he found he didn't mind it much. "Di Di?" he said, walking over.

"The pleasure is all mine," he said, with his slight, unplaceable accent--unplaceable because he was from a place no one else in the City had heard of. He took her hand and bowed over it, knowing it was probably not quite the right gesture, but not really caring.

"How about here? My treat, in return for the lessons." He wondered who she lived with, whether she had family in the city, whether it was perfectly normal here for a girl her age to be out without a chaperon. He decided any questions could wait until later, though. It was certainly more polite that way.

Alester shrugged as he took his latte--chosen because someone had mentioned the drink to him, "Chivalry's more of an old fashioned concept. Proscribed forms of politeness are very much alive. I'm afraid that if you ever need your honor defended in a duel you're on your own."

He notices that Di Di isn't just making a casual statement, but he doesn't react. If you ask people too many probing questions, they start asking you things back, and at the moment he's not ready for that.

"I don't even know where to start. I've lived in three countries by now and each place has had it's good points and bad. The city I was just in before ending up here is called Adras and it's a port city, so there's plenty of activity and the view of the ocean is beautiful. The buildings aren't big like some of the ones here, maybe four stories, except for the Great Houses belonging to the most prominent merchant families, which are almost little fortresses. There are people from all over living there. But not in the same way as here, that's for sure."

He looks around with a wry smile.

"But you'll have to tell me exactly what you want to hear about, or I'll just go on and on. And I'm sure your home would be just as interesting to me."

"Government...well, I grew up in Charterre, which is ruled by Grand Duke, not a king, but we're independent, and the government is something of a fusion of a monarchy and a republic. Most of the rest of the continent is technically part of the Empire, and Adras is an independent city-state under control of an elected governor who is answerable only to the Empress. Starska is ruled by a king and firmly under control of the nobility." He paused for a moment to drink more of his latte.

"We don't have any holidays called halloween. There are all sorts of religious observations, but my favorite is the Harvest Festival, which culminates in the Autumnal Equinox. We celebrate all the equinoxes and solstices, but that's really more of a ma--Charterrean thing to do."

He'd been about to say that it was a mage thing, but caught himself in time. He just didn't want to go into that.
