Bartimaeus sat on the couch in Kitty's apartment in Ptolemy's form. The egyptian youth was dressed in modern clothing and sitting cross-legged. He knew Kitty wanted the full story of what happened, how exactly Nathaniel had died.

He'd seen the restlessness Kitty was displaying, she was probably in shock. Nathaniel's death was final.
A hand rose up to go through his hair, Ptolemy's hair.
"First of all... That wound Nathaniel had was more than a little scratch, it was serious. But we needed to destroy Nouda... he insisted..."
Just repeating the events made the normally slightly sad expression on Ptolemy's face seem older, even without age.

"The wound?" The wound. The wound. Of course. Nathaniel's side. In all the excitement, if huge explosions and screaming could be called excitement, she'd quite forgotten about it. Forgotten that there had been a threat, a danger to Nathaniel other than the huge, cranky bastard that was Nouda. And she hadn't thought, hadn't stopped to consider it could be just as serious.
"Oh. That wound."
A wave of guilt washed over her, and she clenched her firsts tightly, pushing her nails into her skin, cursing herself for not appreciating it properly at the time. For not helping him. For not forcing him to leave while he had still had the chance.
He insisted... Of course Nathaniel would have insisted. The arrogant little magician couldn't have done anything but. The idea would have been fixed in his mind, and he wouldn't have turned from it even if all the common sense in the world was shoved in his skull.
"He insisted in going in all gung-ho for the big finish."
